Clean, cozy, comfortable and cute are words that aptly describe our "camp" on Beech Hill Pond in Otis, Maine. A "camp" is a small house in the country or by a lake used by families to relax and enjoy the beauty of a natural environment.

Our camp sits on a wooded lot and is small and simple. It is not a "McMansion" and it is not fancy. It is a well-built, efficient, comfortable place to vacation and explore Maine’s wonders. Our house overlooks Beech Hill Pond, a 4 ½ mile long, 1 mile wide, spring fed lake close to the middle of the state of Maine.

Otis is a tiny rural town, but is close to Ellsworth, (a 20 minute drive) and 45 minutes from Mount Desert Island and the amazing Acadia National Park.

Yes, we have plumbing! Our house was skillfully hand built by Malcom Hardy, our 70 year old father in the early 1990’s. The house has two small bedrooms and one large living/dining/kitchen area. The bathroom is 3/4 full, meaning there is just a shower, no tub. One bedroom has two twin beds and the other has one double bed. There is also a double sized fold out futon in the living room, but we really feel that a family of four is the maximum that can stay comfortably in the house.

In addition to the amenities listed below, the camp has a side deck with a picnic table and an outdoor camp fire for roasting marshmallows and evenings of great conversation. We do not have a dishwasher or a washer and dryer, but the good news is that there is a beautiful view of the lake from the sink as the dishes are hand washed and there is an LLBean outlet store in Ellsworth directly across from the nearest laundromat so that it is possible to shop during both the wash and dry cycles.

The best aspect of our camp is that the rental includes the use of our four boats. We have one 17 foot bright red Old Town Discovery canoe, one double Old Town 16 foot kayak (also red), and two Old Town Loon 120 individual kayaks, one blue and one gray, which have been safely and independently used by our own children since they were 8 years old. We also keep on hand a variety of life vests and paddles to suit every age and size. The inclusion of the boats can save visitors $250 per week or more.

Families visiting Beech Hill can relax at the pond and swim in front of the house to our hand built swim float, or swim at the sunny, pebble beach for residents at the end of the pond, a great destination for a kayak ride. You can canoe or kayak all around the lake and view loons and other wildlife. Three miles down the lake is a huge rock called Junk of Pork, which has a ladder and is great place for the brave to jump in. The lake is also great for fishing, and there are many different types of fish in the lake such as perch, pickerel, and brook trout. A fishing license, available at the Otis Town office, is required for adults.

There is a hiking trail up Grotto Hill on the pond. Or, for the more adventurous, there are numerous beautiful trails and amazing carriage roads for hiking and biking at Acadia National Park. There is all kinds of shopping, mall and big box in Bangor, antiques and flea markets in Ellsworth and along Route 3 to Belfast, as well as the unique shops and charm of towns on Mount Desert Island.

There, and on the way to the island, you will also find the Acadia Zoo, glider planes, museums, whale watching expeditions, book stores, restaurants and touristy shops. Acadia National Park also offers nature walks and classes in photography and the constellations, to name a few. Events are listed each week in a free magazine called the Acadia Weekly which is available in grocery stores and gas stations.

Ellsworth is a town that we feel, after 12 summers here, is really coming into it’s own. We have found two excellent restaurants: the Union River Lobster Pot, (8 South Street) and Finelli’s (pizza, subs and salads, Route 1 at the Triangle). For the past few summers we have enjoyed theater productions at The Grand, The Cruciple in 2004, and in 2006, Fiddler on the Roof. The proximity to Acadia National Park is extremely convenient and we take full advantage of the park often. We happily shop for groceries at Shaw’s market in Ellsworth and have found many thrift shops, toy stores and upscale and natural food markets along Main Street as well.

Our family’s ultimate favorite shopping experience is always at the Grasshopper shop for clothes, cards, toys, kitchenware, music, books and souvenirs. There are lots of antiques in and around Ellsworth as well. My favorite is the Chicken Barn along Route 3 on the Bucksport Road. There are also many quaint and beautiful towns to visit: Blue Hill, Surry, Castine, Stonington, Deer Isle, Searsport and of course, all of the "Harbor" towns on Mount Desert Island.

Our camp is perfect for families who enjoy adventures in the outdoors as well as quiet camp days reading and sunbathing by the lake. We are pleased to share our cozy camp with caring guests. Please contact us for further information. Email is best.
