Charming Hillside Villa Set in Olive Grove with Spectacular Views
- Minimum stay:5-7 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
'II Tramonto' (the sunset), a spacious and recently refurbished villa, set in its own private garden and olive grove in peaceful wooded surroundings, is the perfect choice for those who enjoy the countryside. It is situated about ten minutes drive from Casole D'Elsa in the Chianti area on the 'protected' hills of the Montagnola, with fabulous views towards San Gimignano and within easy reach of the famous cities of Siena and Florence. Only a few kilometres away there is a superb choice of restaurants, shops and bars. A special feature of this property is the beautiful interior decoration by the artist owner. Although generously accommodating up to 7, the villa is equally suitable for fewer and is frequently booked by 2 or 4 people.
About the area: In the holm oak and chestnut woods of the Montagnola with its abundance of wild flowers, birds and animals, including wild boar and deer, the expression 'away from it all' says it all.
Here, along the kilometres of the unspoilt mountain range that stretches west of Siena to the coast, walking, riding and cycling excursions become adventures to discover the ancient pathways to hamlets, chapels, castles and villas. From here, in every direction places of historic interest such as Siena, San Gimignano and the Abbey of San Galgano are easily reached.
How to get here, getting about and shopping: From the villa, Il Tramonto (The Sunset), the nearest airports are Pisa(1hr 45 mins), Florence(1hr) and Bologna(2hrs). Colle Val D'Elsa (20 mins) is the nearest town for shopping, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and bus services. Poggibonsi (25 mins) and Siena (30 mins) both offer excellent shopping, bus and train services. The nearest villages with bars, restaurants and shops are just 10 minutes away.
What to do: A great way to discover the Montagnola is on horseback, local stables 20 minutes. The hot springs (50 mins) are a must for their healing qualities. There is lovely river swimming just 25 minutes away and a day trip to the coast is definitely worthwhile.
Restaurants and local producers of wine, cheese and olive oil are dotted all over the area.
The owner, Jackie, designs and makes objects in metal and has a studio/showroom just 5 mins away. She can also arrange visits to the studios of other local artists and craftspeople. Living locally, she is usually available in the event of queries and will be happy to suggest places of interest to visit, depending on guests' preferences.

Unsolicited quotes from guests. “Everything we’d dreamed it would be – peace and quiet, idyllic surroundings and breathtaking views. Watching the sunset from the balcony with a glass of wine; stargazing; awakening to the ‘tinkle’ of the nearby goats bells. The beautiful home ‘held’ us from travelling too far. Who could want for more…..other than a few more days!” “Thank you very much for a fantastic week at Il Tramonto. It’s a wonderful building in a great setting. You are very lucky people to have it, and we count ourselves fortunate to have been able to make use of it. The internal layout of the rooms is excellent – such a sense of space. And dining every evening on the balcony to watch the sun go down was a real treat. With fire-flies in the hedge at no extra cost.” “Villa is stunning and big enough for 7 of us.' '---opening up the bedroom shutters each morning and enjoying the view---'' ' I don't want to go home. This place is stunning. Every room is beautiful.'Did you find this review helpful? Our family of 4 including 2 hard to impress teenagers, spent 5 nights at Il Tramonto before Christmas during the burst of severe and icy weather which left Northern Europe and Tuscany under several inches of snow, and the road up and down from the house, not readily passable without snow chains. However owner Jackie provided invaluable assistance, and of our 5 weeks of travel in Europe staying in some great places, our family all agrees that Il Tramonto was our most special and memorable place to stay. The house is large, full of character and comfort, and most important given that it was –9 degrees outside at 10am one day – cosy for a winter stay. It was also clean and very well equipped. We spent many relaxing hours in front of a lovely open fire with a large stock of chopped wood just outside the door, and plenty of books and other materials available inside. The position is magnificent, and the views and walks very lovely. Given the snow, we didn’t see as much of the area as planned, but had more time to enjoy the house, relax and build snowmen in the garden! Highly recommendedRecommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

What a great place to stay!! The villa is exceptionally clean, beds are comfortable with professionally laundered linen ( why does it always feel so different?). Central heating keeps the villa really warm and the log fire (plenty of logs) is just the icing on the cake! Every window has a fantastic view including the loo!!!! Jackie the owner is very knowledgeable about the area and very helpful. March is a great time to visit Tuscany - the tourists hadn't arrived - and we had no trouble parking at the main attractions. Hope we go back again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Our stay at 'Il Tramonto' was truely a dream holiday, with its indescribible views and overwhelming sense of mystery and romance, its beautiful, vivid sunsets and wonderfully cool mornings and evenings. The drive up is a great daily experience with an abundance of wildlife and views. We found the house a great base to begin wonderful journeys from, and 'what a relief' to come back to its cool tranquility after the heat of the day. It has everything needed for a really superb holiday and we left with heavy hearts and the distinct feeling that in not actually spending whole days relaxing in such lovely surroundings, we had missed a beautiful alternative dimension. Italy has always been a wonderful experience for us and we look forward to returning again and again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

A beautiful villa which was huge and definitely big enough for six adults. We spent a few days after Boxing Day there and it was lovely and cosy with a huge open fire place (with plenty of wood available to burn). The kitchen was fully equiped, there was a huge dining area, plenty of books and games with wonderful views of the (snowy) surrounds. I imagine this place would be just as beautiful in warmer weather. It would also be good for families ( at least two could stay there comfortably).Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children.

Il Tramonto has drawn us back four times in less than three years including a special Christmas visit. The house is spacious, cool and it is almost a shame to leave it each day to explore the charming towns and villages near by. We have spent many happy days relaxing in the garden and on the terrace reading, drawing, eating and gazing at the view of Casole D'Elsa and San Gimignano as the day changes to evening. There is everything we need, no clutter and enough space for 2 to 7 people to be together or apart comfortably. The house is clean and well kept. The owner provides unobtrusive but friendly help and advice. We enjoy buying fresh food locally, cooking or barbecuing and dining on the terrace as the sun sets. If we don't feel like cooking we go down to the nearest restaurant in Scorgiano - the Astronave - which serves good, simple food well. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Siena which is great for wandering, shopping and looking at art. Volterra is an exciting 40 minute road trip through countryside that you may recognise from renaissance paintings. Volterra has a wonderful museum and art gallery. Colle val D'Elsa is the nearest big town and we are very fond of it because it is a busy, lively place which doesn't seem to be aware of how lovely it is. It has an efficient bus service to Firenze and getting a very early bus into Firenze is an adventure far preferable to a stressful drive and trying to park. Buses run to other destinations too. There are numerous small towns to discover. Each has its own character and range of special festivals and fairs. We have been to evening wine tastings, musical events and street markets in Colle, country fairs in Casole DElsa, to Siena the day after the Palio which was magical because the winning jockey, horse, and the whole contrada parades around the city to drums and in wonderful costumes flinging flags into the air and looking remarkably handsome! The small town of Radicondoli has an Arts festival throughout the summer which fills the town with sculpture and turns the square into a theatre for dance and drama. The Chianti towns are easily reached and a day's trip will provide you with great memories and photos and probably lots of presents. There are several places to visit for their tranquility, frescoes, architecture or music- eg San Galgano monastery, Sant 'Antimo and the Abbazia di Olivieto Maggiore in Asciano. Holidays at Il Tramonto have been so perfect we even got married there.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
