Relax at the Rose ....

'There is something ineffably serene about this house. It is a visual version of a Vivaldi Concerto or Handel’s Water Music. I sit and absorb the soothing impact of pale walls against honeyed woodwork, the abundance of flowing space and the unusual sense of tranquility that one feels here. My eye delights in the detail of the solid mantel-pieces that rest above the eight fireplaces, the perfectly chosen artwork that is redolent of a long-ago, somehow simpler, time and the light…always the glorious abundance of light that fills the house.' ...St Marys Magazine

A 1907 Historic Home located in the heart of the historic district of St. Marys, Ga. A traditional 'foursquare' design, and one of the first homes in the area constructed of an unusual type of block (known as granitoid, rarely seen in South Georgia).

The home has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a formal dining room and comfortable living room. While the home has been modernized (central heating and air conditioning, modern kitchen, and more), one can still appreciate the original details of hardwood floors, large windows, dramatically high ceilings and two large porches - all surrounded by a half acre of camellias, azaleas, roses, magnolia, oak, camphor, cedar and persimmon trees, scuppernong grapes and a variety of other lush plantings.

Saint Marys ....
For those of you who are not familiar with St. Marys, allow me to acquaint you with this wonderful small town. Located on the banks of the St. Marys River, the town is the second oldest in the U.S, following St. Augustine, Florida. It is in the Southeast-most corner of Georgia, nestled just west of Cumberland Island and east of Highway I-95. Jacksonville International Airport is only 30 minutes away. It is centrally located between Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach and Jekyll Island/St. Simon's Island/Sea Island. Once in St. Marys however, it feels a world away. Everyone greets you with a smile, and strangers wave hello. St. Marys was named The Best Small Town in America by Money Magazine, and is the site of the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. It was also recently highlighted in Southern Living Magazine.

The town is small and quiet with moss draped oaks and a charming atmosphere. The house is within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. Bikes and golf carts are available to rent. A kayak outfitter offers a variety of trips for all levels of experience. Or try your hand at fishing from the pier or in the river and tidal area. The Rose-Lovell House is just two blocks from the Cumberland Island Ferry and public boat ramp. It is a 45-minute ferry ride to what the Travel Channel has ordained as 'America’s Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach'. Stroll the trails and beaches and catch a glimpse of wild horses, dolphins, white tailed deer, armadillos, wild turkeys and a variety of other birds.

Stop in to the St. Marys Visitor's Center for information regarding activites, restaurants and local history. Meet at the flagpole on the waterfront to join the historic tram tour.

Head 45 minutes west to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Take the guided boat tour and learn about the swamp inhabitants and its fragile ecosystem, or rent a canoe or kayak and see some of the wildlife up close.

Four old friends from high school converged at the Rose Lovell house for a wonderful long February weekend. The home is a perfect retreat from hectic lives. We spent the days and into the wee hours of the nights reminiscing and catching up on old times and our new lives. The house is maintained perfectly, very clean (so nice to walk into a home away from home for a few days and have it be so clean!), and is beautifully furnished and outfitted with all the amenities we could ever need. It has that just right comfortable feel, not stuffy, so you can kick back and enjoy the days. We felt right at home, which is exactly how you want to feel when you're spending time with good friends. And the rental agency is very responsive and the staff very nice. It's a great location for a family or friends reunion - or even just a weekend getaway. Cumberland Island is a must see...even with the whipping wind and crisp air! I'll will be back, no doubt, to make new memories. Thank you!

Our four night stay at the Rose Lovell House over Christmas this year was nothing short of enchanting. It was as if our stay in St Mary's transported us back to a time where people hung out on their porches, relaxed and rested and just enjoyed the peace and serenity of a simpler life. From the moment we walked in the front door...it was as if in some wierd way...we were coming home to grandmas house...with all the amenities provided.... We wanted for nothing. The beds were comfy...plenty of linens and towels. The kitchen and pantry were well stocked with everything we needed. Since the home was not decorated for Xmas...we picked up a 'Charlie Brown' tree at the local market and added some balls, tinsel and pinecones and a few lights. What our little tree was lacking in height and girthwas made up for in it's charm...and the joy it provided for all of us over Christmas. 16 of us in total walked to the 4pm childrens Christmas Eve service at the local Catholic church( 3 blocks from us)....beyond delightful...totally kid friendly...Santa Clause(who would have thought?), A childrens gospel story..topped off with a birthday cake for Jesus after mass...awesome!!Needless to say....the kids loved it!!!! Christmas day...was a frenzy of laughter, presents, children playing, carols chiming ,candy and cookie munching and numerous tears flowing, as we tried to crawl out from under all the wrapping paper and ribbons...ha! We will have to post a picture. It's no wonder the description of St Mary's at Christmas time...is like "Walking out of a Christmas Card"...It has "quaint and charming" written all over it...it is the essence of this place. I can't wait to come back to check out all the antique and consignment shops( of which there are several)... The riverfront( a couple blocks away) is amazing and is surrounded by restaurants, shops and a beautiful Park and Marina....there is just too much to say about this place....not enough words to describe how surreal it is... Hurry...Book this home while you still have the opportunity...don't miss a stay here with your family...We will have many fond memories of our Christmas at the Rose Lovell Home...one of the best ever holiday times with our family...We hope that each of you will be as blessed as we have been by our stay in St Mary's and by this amazing home...Thanks from the Manships, Christmans and Byrds for sharing your lovely home with us for the holidays....May the Lord richly bless you and yours in 2011!

We are 8 college friends who meet every year somewhere - usually in the fall. we graduated from Vassar in 1970. We loved the house, St. Marys, the people (especially Candy was so kind). It is very beautiful here.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful home with our family. we were able to participate in oyster roasts and pig hunts with our friends on Cumberland and then return to the comfort of Rose-Lovell each evening. Our daughter and son-in-law are hooked and we will spread the news. Everything was perfect.

What a wonderful week we had... We love the sweet and hospitable town of St. Marys. Everyone is so gracious. The house and grounds here were exactly what we needed for a stress free wedding week. I've never slept in a softer bed. Your home was a perfect place for our family to gather for the wedding. After hectic days, it was the perfect place to relax and gather for big family dinners. Thank you so much for opening your home to us this week. I'm sure we'll be back again some day.

Very nice place for our large crowd to spend the holiday, cook, walk, explore Georgia's coast and even kayak a bit. Particularly enjoyed moments on the porch with the balmy Christmas weather. Best wishes and see you again sometime soon.

A very good place for us, a group of eight. We have stayed in many big homes but has the best beds. The dining room was perfect for all eight of us. It was well stocked with dishes and utensils. It will be kept in our memories and we will tell others.

About the owner: The Barrie Family

Why the Owner Chose St. Marys:
When vacationing together as a family, we sometimes had a difficult time finding a home that was large enough for us all to stay together. It was important to us to find a home that not only had enough bedrooms, but a good working kitchen, large dining room, and plenty of space to enjoy each other's company or go off and read a book. We found it all at The Rose-Lovell House! The house has a wonderful peaceful, welcoming feel to it! Our family has quite a few family heirlooms in the house, and combined with some special 'finds' it always feels like coming home.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The high ceilings and tall windows welcome a wonderful natural light into the house. It exudes warmth and peacefulness. The two large porches are a great place to visit with family and friends, or relax on the hammock with a book and cool glass of tea. With a half acre of trees and flowers, it is a beautiful setting for a barbecue or game of horseshoes. Walk to the ferry dock for Cumberland Island, or to many of the shops and restaurants located in the historic district.
