Private Homes, Mt. Werner house description
“Alpenhill' is a delightful mountain retreat on spacious grounds and a cherished second home we share with guests throughout the seasons. We're on Steamboat's main ski mountain only 3/8 mile to the gondola & slopes, in a beautiful mountain neighborhood with tree lined hillsides, spectacular views AND on the BUS ROUTE! It is simply where most want to be when visiting Steamboat. You will find NO white carpet here, but plenty of firewood and the warmth of an upscale mountain home, made for casual living. Soak in our private hot tub while the kids and family dog romp in the big fenced yard or barbecue on the shaded back deck next to the aspen grove. Watch the “alpenglow” move across Mt Werner and enjoy the spectacular 100 mile view down the Yampa Valley!
Walk to the ski slopes and gondola or restaurants and summer music programs. It's also close to basic services as banks, ATMs, groceries, Medical
Inside you'll find the warm interior of a desiger's mountain cabin with pine walls, a wood burning fireplace and stone hearth PLUS all the high tech equipment you could want, as Dsl (wireless), DVD, VCR, HD TV w/ DVR, often including the NFL Dish Network Football programing and a family friendly video library for your use. A big oak dining table provides a perfect place to gather around, with a bar and two outside decks near by. The laundry room and garage come in handy on active vacations and our kitchen is extremely well equipped for stylish and memorable meals... inside or outside. This is not just a rental unit, but a real home with many extra comforts mixed with 'Western flair', log beds and wonderful local and wildlife photography. In fact.... it looks like it may be the home of animal lovers and adventurers ... and IT IS!
Each of the 3 bedrooms is appointed with quality mattresses and bedding including winter down and summer comforters, individual thermostats, shaded windows and ceiling fans to make for good sleeping. The master bedroom is a mini 'get a way' with glass doors opening on to the deck facing the top of Mt Werner. It has an impressive King sized log bed as well as desk, phone and internet connections (for any workaholic traveling with you). The attatched master bath includes a large whirlpool tub and separate shower. A second bedroom has another beautiful (queen) log bed and a pretty third bedroom has oak twin beds. There’s also a queen sofa bed in the Living area if needed. Sleeping is always comfortable with individual room thermostats, shaded windows, good ventilation and quiet ceiling fans for summer.
If you ever need assistance, our caretaker couple lives in a seperate apartment on the property and will be happy to help. 'Alpenhill' was made for good times, so just bring your loved ones, skis and a smile.

My wife and I have vacationed at this comfortable home on numerous vacations over the past 20 years. On every visit we have found the home to be clean and orderly throughout. The kitchen is well equipped. On the rare occasion we have needed anything, the caretaker, who lives in an adjacent apartment, has been helpful. We have noticed many improvements in recent years such as more convenient access to the deck, which has been greatly enlarged. While the property is not isolated, it is private and quiet – and the location is gorgeous. Our two dogs enjoy the large fenced yard, too. The owner’s photos accurately depict the home. We plan to return this summer. After a long road trip it’s reassuring to know this lovely home is ready on our arrival.

Perfect place for my girlfriends to get away, rest, and enjoy the real mountains. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you for providing a clean, spacious, easy to find, and all around comfortable place to stay. Great places to eat out, but we enjoyed doing our own cooking. Thanks for the fresh spices! We plan to be back next year.

Has potential but was disappointing

Neat place, but many promises in the posting weren't kept. According to the owner it hadn't been rented for quite a while before we got there. There was no wood already in the house. Inside temp was in the low 50s when we got there late at night. Short on paper towels, no laundry detergent, no fire-starter or newspaper (had to use notebook paper that we brought). And the accumulation of snow on the roof had started melting to the point that it seeped inside and half of the dining area was flooded and unusable. I know this is a mountain home, but it wouldn't have been too much to ask of the on-site housekeeper to see that these things were addressed before we got there (he was shoveling snow off the roof during our stay, after we had complained of the water, causing our dog to go nuts), or the owner to make sure that things are taken care of for her only renters in many weeks. I asked about a modest refund for the inconveniences and she was totally unreceptive at first and hasn't returned my phone call or e-mail since. Add this to fairly poor communication before hand (as of the day before we left, hadn't heard from the owner with information as to how to get the keys, etc when she had said I'd get that a week before we arrived). I've used VRBO many times before and never had this many issues. Overall, very disappointing experience.

Owner response: My guest, Jim of Littleton, shows a very poor memory, creative story telling and a resentful streak in his review. It was really a “pay back” to an owner (me) who refused to grant a free extended stay, which he demanded, based the false and misleading claims he lists. Shame on Jim who gives guests a very negative image with his self serving methods. He booked a long weekend, was given a discounted rate and allowed to bring along his problem dog and then confirmed daily to the caretaker everything was “great”, no complaints. But LATE the night before he was to depart, (after a beautiful big snow) Jim called me, complaining about ridiculous items and asking for a free extended stay and refunds. Really now, WHO justifies a late night call to an out of town owner for a refunds & “freebies” because they ran out of paper towels their last night, had to turn up the thermostat (when it was 10 below outside) or bring in a little firewood which is only 20 feet away in the attached garage (next to his car) or because someone is good enough to shovel his decks and roof, no less, after Record Snows? I’m surprised he didn’t demand I get out of bed and make his unruly group dinner! There was NO flood and NO big problem! Shame on Jim, for attempting this scam a long time VRBO owner with with many years of satisfied guests who return regularly. We pride ourselves on keeping our property clean, well maintained and full of little “extras” so our family and guests have a comfortable and welcoming “real home” to enjoy each time they return. We plan to continue this for years to come.

About the owner: Former interior architect, business owner, wildlife/ animal lover and avid skier, Cynthia, moved 'Out West', from Michigan, 30 years ago and selected Steamboat as her family's second home. Later she purchased 'Alpenhill' for visits because of it's prime location and private grounds and so her dogs could come along too. She transformed the older large single family home into a private vacation retreat with a seperate caretaker's apartment for an onsite couple to keep things nice for her and guests, year round.
