Property description

This traditional stone built cottage has been entirely refurbished (completed Jan 2012) using natural materials throughout. The cottage has a spacious open plan ground floor, incorporating lounge, dining and kitchen area. The cottage is perfect for an intimate break for two, but can also accommodate a small family. The lounge seats 4 comfortably. Stunning limestone floor throughout, with original stone open fireplace and cast iron fire back.

The cottage is furnished in a modern style with TV, DVD, wi-fi and a good selection of movies and boxed sets. Small library, playing cards, board games, puzzles and children's toys.

The kitchen area has a gas hob and oven, fridge freezer, washing machine, Belfast sink, and is fully equipped for the keen cook.

Chapelton Cottage is set in a stunning, riverside location in rural Perthshire, the Heart of Scotland. Views from the property and surrounding gardens are breathtaking year round. Pheasants, red squirrels and a host of bird life are daily visitors to the gardens. Deer live on the hillside immediately above the cottage, and birds of prey can be seen circling overhead.

During spring and summer, the gardens across the region thrive, and there is a fantastic programme of events for the keen garden visitor. Spectacular Cluny House Gardens is a few minutes walk.

Perthshire has a rich legacy of castles, palaces, churches, battlefields and historic sites. Scone Palace, Queens View, Soldier's Leap at Killiekrankie, and Blair Castle, and the newly restored Stirling Castle are all within an hour's drive.

Perthshire is also known as 'Big Tree Country'. Fortingall, a few miles from our cottage is the home of an ancient yew, thought to be the oldest living tree in Europe. Birnam Oak, near Dunkeld is said to be the sole survivor of Birnam Wood, made famous in Shakespeare's Macbeth. This ancient oak is thought to be over 1,000 years old, with many of its branches now held up by wooden crutches.

There is something for everyone within easy travelling distance of our cottage.

The River Tay, world-famous for its salmon fishing, runs by the bottom of the garden, and there are a number of popular fishing beats within walking distance. There are several golf courses in the area, including legendary Gleneagles. For those of you looking for a fast-paced, action holiday, there is canoeing, white water rafting, kayaking, abseiling, hillwalking, mountain biking and horse riding.

The small town of Aberfeldy is just a couple of miles from our cottage and is your nearest shopping centre. It has a wonderful Community Campus built in 2010. This is open to the public, and has a fantastic swimming pool, gym and climbing wall. The award-winning, Watermill book shop is a relaxing place to while away some time, browsing the well-stocked shelves, and enjoying a coffee or lunch in the attractive cafe. (It has a special kids section). There are small supermarkets, a deli, cafes, bars, ATMs, a petrol station and Tourist Information Centre.

Dewar's World of Whisky is on the outskirts of the town and welcomes visitors to sample a dram. The town boasts a newly refurbished (opened April 2013)cinema on the site of the town's original Art Deco one, built in 1939. Aberfeldy is also home to the Birks, a stunning, woodland walk with spectacular waterfalls, and the inspiration for one of Robert Burns best-loved poems.

The town of Pitlochry is ten miles away. It is well-known for its Festival Theatre which has an extensive year round programme. There are a range of shops, bars and restaurants.

Just beyond Pitlochry is the Visitors Centre at Killiecrankie, the site of Soldiers Leap, where in July 1689, Donald MacBean, a government soldier, is reputed to have escaped death at the hands of Scots clansmen, by jumping more than 18 ft (5.5m) across the fast flowing River Garry beneath. There are magnificent walks all around this area.

The fair city of Perth is a forty minute drive from our front door. Once the capital city of Scotland, Perth is the gateway to the Highlands, and boasts everything you would expect from a small city, including shops, eating places, a cinema, theatre and galleries.

The delightful Cathedral town of Dunkeld is a half hours drive away, and worth a visit. Its scenic woodlands were the inspiration for Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit stories and you can take the kids to meet Mrs Tiggywinkle in the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Garden.

Our cottage is in the very Heart of Scotland, so the visitor attractions of the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Stirling are all within an easy two hour drive.
