Step into the past at the Edgar Degas House, once home to the renowned French Impressionist Master. The resplendent hallway from a past era invites you into the elegant house where the artist lived and painted in 1872-73. This New Orleans landmark is the only home or studio of Degas in the world open to visitors and stands as America's most treasured piece of Impressionist history.
A large collection of reproductions from his world-famous paintings, including many of those done in New Orleans, adorn the hallways and rooms of this grand old home. The common spaces of the house, including "Atelier Edgar (Edgar's Studio), the original room believed to be Degas' bedroom and art studio, are open to the public.
A complete restoration of the entire house has brought back eminence and dignity to this historic landmark. Acute attention to the original floor-plans enabled the house to resume its once majestic characteristics. Historic authenticity is reflected throughout the home's interior and exterior including the color selections of the rooms, which were guided by Degas letters home from New Orleans as well as actual paintings he did in the house.
As accommodations for special guests, for an elegant and intimate event, unique meeting space, or an afternoon spent viewing the house and strolling through its classic New Orleans neighborhood, our museum quality, award-winning house has never failed to impress our visitors and guests.
The Degas House is located in a residential area and therefore is comfortably removed from the heart of the city, while nearly devoid of traffic and noise pollution. About two miles from the Degas House you will find the large and beautiful City Park and New Orleans Museum of Art, while two miles in the other direction one will find the historic French Quarter for which New Orleans is known around the world. Our location is ideally situated to offer the peace and quiet of a bed and breakfast while close to some of New Orleans' most famous attractions.
If you are looking for additonal space, please contact the Degas House directly as we would love to accomodate you.
Come and experience New Orleans from the same perspective as the artist himself!

Why the Owner Chose Other New Orleans Properties
My passion for the grand houses of New Orleans stems from having lived on Historic Esplanade Avenue as a child, in my ancestral maternal families’ home, only blocks from the degas house.
The Unique Benefits at this House
“After traveling much of the world, I have attempted to incorporate many of the experiences I’ve had, to reflect the Degas House as more than a place to visit or spend the night, but to create a true, authentic experience for the most savvy and educated traveler interested in a unique travel adventure, while maintaining a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Our guests truly feel at home with not only the house, but also the history that unfolded here within our 4 walls.
Tours include a viewing of the award winning film of Degas time in New Orleans and are often guided by a Degas direct decedent The Property has been restored to reflect the backgrounds of the Masterpieces created by Edgar Degas during his time in the house
Weekenders enjoy sumptuous Creole Breakfast wifi, local phone calls. weekday continental breakfasts and secured off street parking are all included in the price.
Home New Orleans' most popular music venues, Frenchmen Street is the locals’ escape from the touristy clichs and annoyances of Bourbon Street. Lined with eclectic jazz clubs, funky hang outs, and a trendy, Eastern Hemisphere inspired hookah bar, this one New Orleans destination that should be on every visitor’s bucket list. Frenchmen Street is located roughly 22 blocks from the Degas House. Though not acceptable walking distance for most folks, the music and culture of Frenchmen Street can be realized with a 5/5 taxi fare, i.e. in 5 minutes and for $5.

David’s passion for the grand houses of New Orleans led him to purchase the Edgar Degas house in 1993, restoration took place in 1995 and opened in 1996 as the “Degas House Historic Home and Courtyard Inn.” The Edgar Degas foundation was established in 1995 as a 501C3 non-profit organization, whose educational mission includes preserving the legacy of Degas worldwide.
The French Minister of Culture presented David the award of Chevalier (photo) in the French National Order of Arts and Letters in March 2009, for his accomplishments in furthering French culture in New Orleans and preserving French Heritage through his work on the Degas House.
Currently, David is working with the American Association of Museums, who have invited Degas House to participate and is currently involved in the Museum Assessment program, evaluating Degas House for accreditation as a “Historic House Museum.”
Besides flying, David enjoys skiing and water sports, and traveling, especially Europe and the Greek Islands. At home, David enjoys hosting parties at the Degas House.

I stayed at the Degas House with a handful of friends. Like much of New Orleans, the home has plenty of charm and history, in addition to its beautiful architecture. I, personally, stayed in the Desiree Room, which was very spacious and comfortable. It also has ample natural light, which enhanced the room’s natural splendor. The Degas House also has a very interesting guided tour that as a guest of the house is free! It provides a glimpse into the past and really makes you feel priveleged to sleep in such a storied residence. Other highlights of our stay were a tremendous breakfast and a wonderfully accomodating staff. I would highly recommend a stay at the Degas House to anyone planning on visiting New Orleans.
