Why the Owner Chose Saugatuck

My husband and I were looking for a vacation home a short driving distance from Chicago, Detroit, and Lansing. After loads of research, we visited towns on the Lake Michigan coast and fell in love with Saugatuck. Its lively arts scene plus waterfront and world class Oval Beach were deciding factors.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Our home is in an historic neighborhood known as "The Hill". We are located just 2 blocks above the main streets of town and so it is easy for everyone in the family to come and go as they please, without cars. We can take the Chain Ferry across the river to the Lake Michigan side or elect to drive, bike, or run there. Service is also provided by the Interurban Bus for a very small fee. Saugatuck homes are mostly a mixture of Victorian, Federal, and Bungalow design and there is plenty to admire as one walks around town. Another plus is the close proximity to Holland, MI (about 12 miles). Here one can visit the Barnes and Noble and all the other national chains if a "fix" is needed. UPick Farms and Wineries are also close by and there are tons of family type activities. Late evenings, the bar scene is lively with the added bonus of being able to walk home! The Center for the Arts (SCA)presents plays and concerts and the parking lot hosts the twice weekly farmer's market during the growing season. Sledding and cross country skiing are popular in the winter. There is a small ice rink across from the town square in the winter. In the summer, there are plenty of places along the Kalamazoo River to rent boats, kayaks, canoes, etc...Oh, and did I forget the shoppping? Saugatuck has an array of unusual shops....just walk down to town anytime and pop in. And, of course, don't forget to visit the many art galleries.

Wonderful place!

My friends and I rented this house for a weekend reunion. It was in perfect condition and spotless when we arrived. There are many common spaces to enjoy and every room is decorated in a lovely way. The owner was extremely prompt in correspondence and gave us a lot of helpful information about the area. The area itself is also very charming, even in the winter. The local businessowners were all very friendly and kind and we had delicious meals at several restaurants.

This place was the BEST!!! With 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms there was no problem accommodating 9 people. The house had everything you could wish for and felt like you were at home (if you lived in a huge historic house within walking distance to shops, restaurants and attractions that is). When you stay here you should use the Interurban. We had it pick us up from the house and take us to a restaurant for dinner. Also rode it to Douglas for a day of sightseeing. We plan on returning and would recommend the house on Mary street to everyone -- as long as you don't want it the week that we do!

The PERFECT place

Date of Stay: 06/18/11 Review Submitted: 06/29/11

We had family from all parts of the country meet for the week. This home was perfect with plenty of room and many areas to congregate as well as getaways. The screened porch was perfect and there were many of us on it at all times. The home is immaculate and stocked beyond compare. The stuff I brought from home stayed in the trunk. Karen is an absolute delight and made sure the stay was fantastic. This is so close to town, you can go down and be there in minutes. Karen's decorating makes you feel right at home, the pictures don't do it justice. It is actually more beautiful than pictured. We will definitely be back.

Owner response:Thanks for the kind words. I am grateful to have house managers Aron Lowe and Jerod Rinkus. They do a fabulous job keeping the house clean. We look forward to hearing from you in the future. Karen

A Wonderful Weekend Amongst Friends...

Date of Stay: 05/13/11 Review Submitted: 05/16/11

I cannot begin to tell you how absolutely wonderful your home was for our group of life-long friends. The weather wasn't the best (yikes) however, the covered and enclosed porch made for a cozy and comfortable setting for many jokes and cups of coffee during our stay. The house was not only immaculate when we arrived, the decor, size of bedrooms and baths, lay-out and the host of ammenities you provided made it a home away from home the moment we stepped inside. Thank you so much for making an anticipated weekend with loving friends so much more than we could have expected. Your beautiful home made it's way to the top of our list for future Saugatuck trips. A sincere thank you, Karen. Warmly, Heather L. Sikorski

Owner response:Thanks so much, Heather. I am so glad that the house made up for the yucky weather! I will look forward to hearing from you again. Karen

Great value for the $$$

Guest: JS (Kalamazoo, Mi)
Date of Stay: 01/28/11 Review Submitted: 02/01/11

We did a birthday weekend here in January 2011 and were very impressed. 5 couples plus one college student had more than enough space. We barely used the parlor, but all 11 fit around the huge table for multiple meals from the spacious kitchen. Oh yeah - the kitchen, stocked very well - two containers of coffee, 3 choices of baggies & plastic wrap, plates, silverware, serving bowls & trays, pots & pans, 2 toasters, serving platters, fancy coffee maker, and plenty of paper towels. Other nice to haves included brochures & takeout menus for local eateries, heated floors in the master bath, books, plenty of towels/blankets/toilet paper, telephone line, washer/dryer, two TV rooms, and wireless internet access for the 5 laptops, 2 iPads, and one Apple TV we brought (I got 1.8 mbps in a speed test). The home is tastefully decorated & furnished, very clean, and did not feel like a rental (it is obvious the local caretakers love the home). Karen was a joy to work with and had great systems put in place to ease both arrival & departure.

Owner response:Thanks, Jim. Hope the surprise went off without a hitch! Karen PS. Your are so right about the house managers, Aron and Jerod. They keep everything humming!

Simply Wonderfu!

Guest: Pixie, Tom and family (St. Louis, MO)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 07/22/10

Our family recently returned froma week in Saugatuk and the 10 of us stayed at this fabulous home on Mary St.l We had never been to Saugatuk before but we will go back! The house has everything a big family could want. Kitchen is stocked with everything one needs to cook even the most gourmet of meals. The antique furniture is gorgeous, but still offers a very homey and comfortable experience. Everything is provided, even things one wouldn't think would be when renting a vacation home. The garage is full of beach necessities such as chairs, beach umbrellas, and beach toys. Our FAVORITE ROOM was the screened in proch. Coming from Chicago and St Louis sitting on a screened in proch in the summertime is impossibly uncomfortable. However, the weather was wonderful and the family would gather there in the morning with coffee and in the evening to play a game......our 2 year old grand daughter found plenty of room on the proch to dance and "perform" for the ever present audience! There is plenty of room in the yard for croquet (they had game in the garage) or bocce ball, although the mosquitos got the better of us a couple of evenings. Only a short walk to town which is darling, and full of great shops, restaurants, and ice cream stores! A walk along the river or a short trip across the river on the chain fairy are just two of the many activities that can be enjoyed in town. The beach is a 5 minute drive and is expansive and shows off Lake Michigan with pride! A most memorable experience for our family and we will return. PS We were hesitant to spend so much money on a rental.....but like the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for" and in this case we got much more!!!! Pixie, Tom and Family

Owner response:Thanks so much for the kind words. We look forward to renting to you again.

Great home/Great Location

Guest: Linda (Winnebago, IL)
Date of Stay: 06/09/10 Review Submitted: 06/22/10

Many of us ladies stayed at this home recently and could not have been happier with our choice. The owner won our hearts from the git-go as a bottle of wine and chocolates greeted us when we arrived. The home is lovely and very comfortable for a large group. The huge kitchen and porch were our favorite two places. The bedrooms are spacious and beds were extremely comfortable. My personal favorite was the jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom. There was nothing we lacked. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and even grocery items. There's even a bedroom on the main floor for those who cannot take the stairs. The home is a short walk to town. We could not have been happier with our choice. We have stayed in several homes in Saugatuck and this was by far the very best.

Owner response:Thanks, Linda. We look forward to your next stay! You were great guests: the house managers were thrilled with your neatness and for the unexpected tip. Karen

"This is my second time renting this home for our annual Mom's getaway weekend. We have tried other locations in the past and decided that we no longer want to go anywhere else than this home. Karen (the owner) is so fantastic to work with. The house is absolutely gorgeous. There is so much character and charm to this home that it's impossible to mention them all. We arrived to a bottle of wine and chocolates, we hired her house manager to come in each morning and clean up any untouched dishes and get the coffee started for us. Her house manager brought fresh baked muffins. We felt so pampered and "at home" in this rental. I have already booked for our rental next year and can't wait. Highly recommend!"

I am amazed at how beautiful this home was. The pictures were awesome, but you just have to see it with your own eyes to appreciate every last detail to this gorgeous property. I had my wedding ceremony in the parlor of this home and was able to invite my family to stay for two nights. My original plan was to get married at the beach but it was too cold. I was more than happy to change my plans and take advantage of what this beautiful home had to offer as a back drop to our marriage ceremony. All I can say is....WOW!

Owner response:Thanks, Deb and congratulations once again.
