Our community of Plumtree is a small, quiet, rural community where one can find true peace and tranquility.

Great country cooking can be found in various diners and restaurants nearby, as well as some some really great antique shops just waiting to be explored only minutes from the cabin.

You may also wish to take advantage of our covered picnic area, complete with wood burning cooker, which is upstream from the cabin.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby as well as many lovely local waterfalls you can explore. Great skiing is only minutes away at Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain or Hawksnest Ski Slopes.
Did you know that our little Avery County is the Christmas Tree Capital of the World?? Why not start a Christmas tradition by coming to the mountains during November/December each year and visiting one of our many Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farms to find your perfect Christmas tree. Plumtree has a great Choose & Cut Farm called Sugar Plum Farm where you can select your tree, take a hay ride, buy Christmas decorations, gifts or wreaths and greenery for all your Christmas decorating needs. This would be a great weekend trip for your family!

If you just want to relax during your visit instead of running to and fro, then just sit on the front porch, read your favorite book or listen to the river run by as you watch for local wildlife such as deer, turkey, Harry the blue heron, etc.

We also have a notebook in our cabin which is filled with information on great places to visit and things to do to make your visit to Plumtree a truly memorable experience for you, your family and your pet! Avery County has something for everyone. It is truly a place for all seasons!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Stewart and I have been married for nearly 40 years. I just recently retired from local government and he retired from State law enforcement several years ago. We have 2 children and 3 grandchildren, all boys, ages 15, 13 and 2. The oldest grandson enjoys the sport of dirt track racing, which has now become a passion with our entire family.

We have lived here in Plumtree for almost all of our 40 years together and have been renting cabins as a sideline for the past 8 years. Stewart does all of the maintenance/repair work on our rental properties and can be seen traveling around the property on his trusty golf cart every day. He loves to stop and chat and give directions, suggestions or just answer any questions our guests might have. The best part of having a rental property is being able to meet all the great folks who come to stay at our cabin. In these past few years we have met some truly unforgettable people and have also made some really great friends. We are very happy to say that many of our guests enjoy staying with us so much that they keep coming back year after year. Operating a rental property is a very rewarding experience because we get to share this lovely area of North Carolina with so many others. We look forward to meeting you, too. Call or e-mail us today to make plans for your visit to the mountains.

Perfect for a big family like ours!

Myself, my husband, three children, and two dogs have been coming here for the past three fall seasons to view the leaves and we couldn't ask for a better place to stay! It is always clean, the people who rent will treat you like family, and the fishing is just what we had been searching for years to find. You only need to take a few steps to enjoy the riverbank and fish to your heart's content. The river has been dammed up in one spot providing us with a great place to wade or just stick our feet in and cool off. We only stay here now since there are beautiful, scenic hikes right out the front door, a river steps away, accomodating to our two dogs, and best of all it's big enough that we never feel cramped up - we can enjoy our vacation in our own way.

We have stayed at the River House many, many times. If you like to hear and see the Toe River outside your front door - this is the place for you. There are trails up the mountains and once you are on top of any of these mountains - the sights are breath taking. On the top of one of these mountains are Christmas tree farms in the distance. At every turn on your way to the River House there are more wonderful sights to see. The owners are one of the nicest couples that we have every met. They make you feel like this is your home away from home. You won't be sorry if you you stay here - at any time of the year.

Wonderful & relaxing. I've stayed for several years now during the July 4th weekend. Love being so close to the Toe river. Lots of scenic views. Surrounding towns are fun to explore

RIVER HOUSE -

Guest: CLAIRE BAXTER (COLUMBIA SC )
Date of Stay: 08/05/11 Review Submitted: 08/05/11

This place is awesome. We have been 5 years in a row for July 4th. The cabin is wonderful and has everything you could possibly need, but we spend most of our time outside on the porch watching the river, fishing or tubing. The weather on July 4th is absolutely great and such a relief from Columbia SC (the hottest place in the world - ha). Our dogs enjoy it too - they can roam and swim in the river. The Cooks are super people, they are there if you need anything, but never bother you during your vacation. Spruce Pine is just a few miles away and we always enjoy spending a day there - lunch and antique shopping. This place is something we look forward to every year.
