Christmas is Magical in Swansboro
Year Purchased: 2000
Why the Owner Chose Swansboro
Since relocating to North Carolina in 1990 I have enjoyed the wonderful coastline this state offers. I discovered Swansboro at the end of the 1990's and vowed to secure a piece of this living history. I was fortunate to acquire the 'Methodist Parsonage' in 2000. At that time the almost 100 year old building was faded and worn. Since then I have spent many years restoring the house - and updating it to meet the needs of the 21st Century. I love the atmosphere of this small coastal fishing village - at the gateway to the Crystal Coast. I appreciate the views across the sound, with the passing watercraft serving as a reminder that this is a gateway to many other locations accessible through the Intercoastal Waterway. The close proximity of the beaches of Emerald Isle, Salter Path and Atlantic Beach are another attraction. And then there is the never-ending process of discovering new gems along the waterways - for example, Bear Island with its pristine beaches and turtle nesting grounds, kayaking between the tiny islands of the sound, walking down to Ward's Shore to watch the dolphins - or casting a fishing line. Every day holds a new adventure and surprise - even for those who have called Swansboro home for many years.
And then there are the ongoing Festivals - music and art events, Thanksgiving and Christmas, July 4th festivities. Every month has something to look forward to.
The Unique Benefits at this House
One of my favorite things about the house in Elm Street is the proximity to everything. I literally park my car, throw down the keys, and walk everywhere for the time I am down there. The variety of restaurants is surprising for such a small area - Mexican fare with water views, fresh seafood at the Ice House or Captain Charlie, Gourmet Coffee and great sandwiches at the Church Street Deli, a glass of wine at the Irish Pub - or an 'on tap' beer. And across highway 24 - a short walk under the bridge - yet another selection of restaurants with water views and a choice of Italian, American and Family Fare.
And even the men in my family like coming down here - while the women folk explore the many fascinating shops they walk down to the pier with their fishing rods, enjoy a cigar at the local Cigar Lounge or catch up on sports activities with cable TV.
Last - but not least - I love to buy some fresh seafood from Phillips Seafood - a walk across the bridge - and cook up a feast in the modern kitchen - or on the grill in the private back yard.
One block from house - morning coffee at Church Street Deli and beer on tap at the Irish Pub in the evening.
On the mouth of the White Oak River - great line fishing spot - walk under the bridge and enjoy the atmosphere
Take a walk to the new 'Pirate Park' and enjoy a break while the children enjoy the playground
Waterfront dining - casual or formal - great food and wonderful views
Fresh catch of the day - straight off the boats. Take it home and cook the way you like it!
Bring your boat and dock it at the Marina while you enjoy the comforts of our home
There are several Golfing venues in the area - the closest are: Silver Creek Golf Club - Swansboro Star Hill Golf Club - Cape Carteret The Links at Plantation Harbor - Havelock Country Club of the Cry
Nancy Lee Fishing Center - half and full day charters. Complete Bait and Tackle store - Seafood Market
Watch from the shore or take a kayak or charter cruise and enjoy the wonder of these gentle creatures
Short walk from the house - watch the yachts and marine life go by in the intra-coastal waterway
Owner's Map of Swansboro
My parents moved to South Africa from England and I was born in Johannesburg. Since my early childhood I have had a wanderlust - in fact I recently found a travel journal that I kept when I was 10 years old, and traveling in Mocambique. As a child we had a family 'week-end escape' - a historic country home that had once been an old school house, an asparagus farm and later a week-end retreat . I have fond memories of family gatherings there for holidays and special occasions - as well as simple moments sitting by the river and watching the local birds. We also had a seaside retreat at one time - again, a place for friends and family to get away together and enjoy each other's company.
Since those early days I have literally traveled around the world many times, (That is me in Rio - the one in black) always attempting to find accommodation at small hotels, bed and breakfast and guest houses that reflect the local population and cultural differences of the location. Based on my experiences I have tried to create a 'home from home' for the guests that choose to stay in my house in Swansboro. My goal it to establish a setting in which everyone feels comfortable to put up their feet, relax and unwind - recreating the wonderful escapes of my early youth.

We could not have been more pleased with our stay this past Christmas in Swansboro. Since our daughter leaves nearby and our family is rather large we needed more sleeping space than her home could provide. Therefore, we rented the Creed home in Swansboro. Everything about this home and town was perfect and delightful. The Creeds even left special Christmas goodies for our family to enjoy. This home is extremely neat, clean and very charming. Everything from the rental of the property, checking in and departure was so easy and pleasant. Our family felt so welcomed and relaxed. Thank you for helping our Christmas away from home so wonderful. I highly recommend this home to others. In fact we plan to try to rent it again when all our family gathers again in the Swansboro area.
Owner response:We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay - and that the weather was wonderful this year! Thank you for the gumbo and bisque you left in our freezer - it was delicious! We look forward to having you with us again - it is wonderful when our guests return time and again. Carla Reed

Dear Carla Greetings from Gloucester! I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay in your sweet and comfortable home. The boys thought it was "awesome' and our son who just returned from Afghanistan greatly appreciated having a "home away from home" to come to. We enjoyed the quaintness and historical atmosphere of Swansboro very much, the farmers' market and shops, along with the beach on Emerald Isle. Especially the warmth of the ocean water which is quite different from the cold temp of the ocean here in Gloucester. I'm so happy your house was available - it really helped to make our stay that much more special With kind regards Cindy and family

We rented the house for the weekend before the Fourth of July holiday and had a wonderful time.We were pleasantly surprised that the property was even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. My boyfriend, his mother, my brother, our children (ages 10-19), and I were able to spend the weekend together with plenty of room to spread out.His sister, brother-in-law, and niece even joined us for the day on Saturday and we were all able to have dinner together in the spacious dining room. Throughout the weekend we enjoyed swimming on Bear Island, kayaking & boating in the ICW, biking along the Bicentennial Bicycle Route, and visiting shops. The house was well-equipped for our needs with all the comforts of home and we only needed to bring beach towels/toys and food! Our only regret is that we weren't able to stay for the festivities on Independence Day as we needed to drive home (Durham/Chapel Hill) to work the next day. We will definitely be returning as soon as we are able to get everyone together again!
Owner response:Thank you for taking time to write your review We have tried to make the house welcoming for multi generational families - looks like we were on target for your family! Sounds like you were able to get a lot into your long week-end Hope you are able to visit for longer next time

Carla, We've had a great time here this week. Kayaked to Bear Island, launched from the State Park off Hammock's Beach Road, kayaked around Huggins Island several times, launched from the NC Wildlife Boat Ramp at Cedar Point, caught flounder, croaker and red drum. Visited the shops, had beers and food at the Ice House and Nicky's and we grilled Tuna on your grill. We also enjoyed walking all over Swansboro. The house is well equipped and very comfortable. Thank you!

We stayed in Swansboro awaiting our sons return to Camp Lejeune from Afghanistan. It is only a 20 minute drive to the main gate at Lejeune. This rental offers much more privacy and comfort than any hotel can give. The owner of the home was very accommodating and concerned that our stay went well. If you are looking for a good nights sleep this is the place, the beds are extremely comfortable.
Owner response:We are glad that our house provided a comfortable welcome home for your son. We are honored to have the families of our Marines use our house as their 'home from home'. We look forward to a return visit sometime soon!

My family enjoyed our trip to Swansboro. As usual we enjoyed walking into town to enjoy coffee shops, restaurants, and watching the boats on the river. The beach is only a short drive from the house which is wonderful to come in for lunch or a break from the "sun". The house had lots of "extras" and was warm and cozy!! We will definately be staying again!!
Owner response:I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have just freshened up the decks and porch for the Summer and I am glad that you were able to take advantage of the outdoor facilities. We look forward to having you back as our guests in the Fall - Mullet Festival is in October!

I live in the UK and stayed in this lovely holiday home while in North Carolina on holiday. I was very impressed and had a fantastic time! The property is so clean and well maintained and is a home away from home. The owner was so friendly and very accommodating. The house is situated in a lovely little village and a short drive from the beach. I have recommended this holiday home to all my friends and family and will definitely be returning again soon.

We love this charming historic house in the qaint little town of Swansboro. We have stayed here several times and will keep coming back for more. We love the cozy comforts of the house and all the conveniences that come with it, not having to pack your own bedding and towels what more could you ask for...We loved to lounge on the deck during the day and to have dinner on it at night. The fenced in back yard is great for the kids to play and burn off some energy. Afternoon and evening strolls down to the local ice- cream shop were a favourite, all the shops are within walking distance, even for a two year old. It is also a quick 5 min drive to the beach, what a pleasure. Once again many wonderful memories were made and a fantastic time was had by all. I highly recommend this cottage to the young and single or married with kids...

I recently stayed at this vacation home with my family and friends and had a wonderful time! I would definitely recommend staying at this charming vacation home to anyone who is considering a quite relaxing setting. There is plenty to do right within walking distance of the cottage. My family and I enjoyed quiet walks through the town as well as visits to the many shops and restaurants close by. The children enjoyed the lovely new playground complete with slides, swings etc (also within walking distance), this kept them busy for a few hours. The local ice-cream shops were visited on several occasions and when we needed a recharge, the coffee shop down the road kept us going with their gourmet coffee selections. The beach is close by and took just a few minutes to get there, so we were able to spend most of our time on the beach enjoying the warm summer sun! My husband is an avid fisherman and he and his friends loved the convenience of walking to the docks to do some fishing. Might I add that several fish were actually caught! No matter what it is you are looking for I think that you will find it in this holiday home. The house was neat and provided plenty of sleeping space. The back yard was great for barbequing and the kids were able to run around and play in the fenced yard while we took a break. We are planning to visit the beach again soon and this cottage in Swansboro will be our first choice!!
Owner response:Thank you for mentioning the new park and playground - I discovered it myself during a walk around the neighborhood and wondered if it met the needs of my younger guests! Nice to hear that someone actually managed to catch some fish - my attempts were not great and I found that it was less frustrating to admit defeat and buy the local catch!

We have spent several wonderful weekends at this property. Swansboro is a delightful little town and this charming house is perfectly located to make the most of it. It is comfortably and very attractively furnished, and being in the historical district means it is in easy walking distance of all of Swansboro's downtown shops and restaurants. It is an easy wander down to the water to fish or watch the sun set over the sound. This property also has a lovely fenced garden - a real bonus when you have small children. It's a short drive to the beach so we were able to enjoy all our favorite activities - swimming, boating and walking. We will be back, and can certainly recommend this property for a great vacation.
Owner response:We are so glad that you enjoyed the house - and the fascinating shops that are one of the charms of the area. Next time take a drive along highway 24 - there are several unique antique shops as well as a tea and coffee house. The area still surprises me with things to discover each time I visit
