Swansboro is a small historic village at the mouth of the White Oak river - it is surrounded by nature reserve and salt marshes - a haven for kayaking and fishing. The house is located right in the historic district, within walking distance of all the restaurants, unique shops, fishing piers and boat docks. Thanksgiving and Christmas are also festive events in Swansboro, when the historic district reflects the celebrations.

And between these special events there is always something to do. Enjoy a cup of morning coffee on the secluded back deck, nestled in a private fenced garden. Spend the day on the nearby beaches or fishing the local waters. Prepare a feast of local seafood in the modern kitchen and share it with friends in the spacious dining room. For environmentalists and nature lovers there are a myriad of things to do - kayaking, hiking, walking, fishing - the list is endless. One thing to make sure to include is a visit to Bear Island - a short drive and ferry ride from the house. Part of the Hammocks Beach State Park this island will take your breath away. Wide beaches with powdered sugar for sand provide entertainment for all - swimming, shelling or just enjoying the fresh air.

Why the Owner Chose Swansboro

Since relocating to North Carolina in 1990 I have enjoyed the wonderful coastline this state offers. I discovered Swansboro at the end of the 1990's and vowed to secure a piece of this living history. I was fortunate to acquire the 'Methodist Parsonage' in 2000. At that time the almost 100 year old building was faded and worn. Since then I have spent many years restoring the house - and updating it to meet the needs of the 21st Century. I love the atmosphere of this small coastal fishing village - at the gateway to the Crystal Coast. I appreciate the views across the sound, with the passing watercraft serving as a reminder that this is a gateway to many other locations accessible through the Intercoastal Waterway. The close proximity of the beaches of Emerald Isle, Salter Path and Atlantic Beach are another attraction. And then there is the never-ending process of discovering new gems along the waterways - for example, Bear Island with its pristine beaches and turtle nesting grounds, kayaking between the tiny islands of the sound, walking down to Ward's Shore to watch the dolphins - or casting a fishing line. Every day holds a new adventure and surprise - even for those who have called Swansboro home for many years.
And then there are the ongoing Festivals - music and art events, Thanksgiving and Christmas, July 4th festivities. Every month has something to look forward to.

The Unique Benefits at this House

One of my favorite things about the house in Elm Street is the proximity to everything. I literally park my car, throw down the keys, and walk everywhere for the time I am down there. The variety of restaurants is surprising for such a small area - Mexican fare with water views, fresh seafood at the Ice House or Captain Charlie, Gourmet Coffee and great sandwiches at the Church Street Deli, a glass of wine at the Irish Pub - or an 'on tap' beer. And across highway 24 - a short walk under the bridge - yet another selection of restaurants with water views and a choice of Italian, American and Family Fare.
And even the men in my family like coming down here - while the women folk explore the many fascinating shops they walk down to the pier with their fishing rods, enjoy a cigar at the local Cigar Lounge or catch up on sports activities with cable TV.
Last - but not least - I love to buy some fresh seafood from Phillips Seafood - a walk across the bridge - and cook up a feast in the modern kitchen - or on the grill in the private back yard.

Owner's Map of Swansboro

My parents moved to South Africa from England and I was born in Johannesburg. Since my early childhood I have had a wanderlust - in fact I recently found a travel journal that I kept when I was 10 years old, and traveling in Mocambique. As a child we had a family 'week-end escape' - a historic country home that had once been an old school house, an asparagus farm and later a week-end retreat . I have fond memories of family gatherings there for holidays and special occasions - as well as simple moments sitting by the river and watching the local birds. We also had a seaside retreat at one time - again, a place for friends and family to get away together and enjoy each other's company.
Since those early days I have literally traveled around the world many times, (That is me in Rio - the one in black) always attempting to find accommodation at small hotels, bed and breakfast and guest houses that reflect the local population and cultural differences of the location. Based on my experiences I have tried to create a 'home from home' for the guests that choose to stay in my house in Swansboro. My goal it to establish a setting in which everyone feels comfortable to put up their feet, relax and unwind - recreating the wonderful escapes of my early youth.

I have just spent several days down here in Swansboro and wanted to comment on what a great job the Town of Swansboro have done with their improvements - I enjoyed the walking trail into the salt marshes, watching the egrets and other wildlife in this pristine environment. I tend to forget what a wonderful place this is - I spent a day on the beach at Emerald Isle (5 minutes away) ate some great local shrimp, oysters and founder, enjoyed breakfast at Yanna's and tried to walk some of this off wandering through the lovely streets of Swansboro. I encourage those of you who love Swansboro to come and share it with us - our home from home welcomes visitors. And to those of you who have already visited - please include your comments here and share some of your experiences in the area with others.

    • We love this place. Swansboro has been a favorite for years and we enjoy staying in the historic district. The house has all the comfort of home and having WIFI means I can catch up on some work while sitting on the front porch or in the immaculate back yard. You can walk or ride bikes to everything - the great shops, restaurants or the marina where we dock our boat while visiting. Swansboro caters to boaters and fishermen with waterfront dining and several public docks where you may leave your boat while shopping. We also enjoy walking down to the public dock to fish with the kids. The house is beautifully furnished with many extras and we love waking to the water views.

      Homeowner Response:
I have just spent a week-end at my property doing some of the ongoing maintenance that this historic property requires. It was the Halloween week-end and it was wonderful being in the historic district for this great holiday! The town is now getting ready for the true Holiday Season - November 14th is candlelight and wine tasting in downtown Swansboro - and then there is the flotilla the Friday after Thanksgiving. Falls and winter at the coast are a treat in Swansboro!
