Year Purchased: 1986
About the owner: Owned by a three generation family partnership the Nemersons and Chertows of New Haven CT, Westport CT, Baltimore MD and Oakland CA we all welcome you our family compound and hope you enjoy the house and grounds as much as five generations of their families have.
Why the Owner Chose Great Barrington: Built in 1927 by Lou and Beatrice Simkins of New York City - he a successful clothing and mink fur manufacturing on 57th Street - what started out as a simple weekend retreat during the 1930s expanded into a prosperous business raising mink and grey fox. In the 1960s the 130 acre estate with four buildings was sold to Reg Nettleton a professional mink rancher. He sold off half the land and ran the business until 1986 when we bought 40 original acres and then added another 40 over time. All remnants of the mink days have been removed by there are still the gracious land vistas and variety of trees and gardens that the Simkins planted during the 1930s and 1940s.
The Unique Benefits at this Estate: Near downtown but totally private - a great place to get away!
