Canones Cabin - Hidden Indian Ruins, Spectacular Views!
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Just outside Abiquiu, in the lush Canones canyon, close to an old Hispanic Village, sits a great cabin with a large peaceful porch and inspiring views. A great weekend and vacation get-away!
There are unique prehistoric Indian ruins on top of a nearby mesa. The tranquil canyon leads to one of America's largest preserves, the Santa Fe National Forest. Following the Canones Creek upstream you can enter a mountainous wilderness stretching from Cuba to Los Alamos with the magnificent Valle Grande in between.
In driving out this canyon there are awe inspiring views of Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre, and the Cerro Pedernal, often painted by Georgia O'Keeffe who had her studio at Ghost Ranch, on the other side of the lake.
The O'Keeffe House in Abiquiu is open for tours from late March through November.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, all make great day trips. Chama with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Chaco Canyon Culture National Historic Park, Ghost Ranch. It is all "just around the corner".
This comfortable cabin has a full kitchen, a shower bath, a loft bedroom with a queen-size bed and a sleeper sofa (queen) in the living area for additional guests.

What a wonderful experiance this was. It was a blessing in disguise. The cabin is wonderful. The best part of all is the beautiful front porch and its view. Capture the sunrise and the sunset, WOW. There are beautiful flowers and the hummingbirds are quite friendly. Precious Dolly, the dog that never fails to visit and bring a smile to your day. The owners, Felix and Grace are just wonderful. Thanks for the wonderful lunch and for patiently answering all our questions. There are so many things to see in the nearby area. A visit to the Monestary and the Monks makes foe a special day.Wo so much enjoyed all the indian ruins. A visit to LosAlmos is also special. Bring some good hiking shoes and enjoy the splendor of this wonderful hideway andthe joy of knowing that there is such a peaceful quiet place left. Everyone should have a chance to visit for a week. Thanks so much Felix Grace and Family for providing us with this special place to get back to the quiet joys of life and the things that really matter.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

This is a very comfortable cabin--clean, attractive and well-appointed. While not as remote as the photo might suggest, the setting is quiet and beautiful. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

We loved it here. The cabin is several minutes from Abiquiu in an absolutly beautiful green valley. The view from the front porch is wonderful. We stayed three days, and most of it was spent on the front porch. Tranquil and quiet. We were entertained constantly by three hummingbirds who frequented the feeder on the porch. Pretty farmlands with a river running through the little vally. It was the prettiest spot we had seen in the area. You could go into Santa Fe and or Taos, but it is sooooooooo nice right on the porch. The tiny town of Abiquiu has an excellent place to eat--Abiquiu Inn--do not miss the tamale cakes. Wow. Gourmet. They were the best things we had had for a long time. The log cabin is light and airy with a tall ceiling. There is a nice kitchen area. and table for eating. It has plenty of room for a couple or small family. You will need to be able to get up rather small stairs to the upstairs bewdroom but it is not difficult. The owners of the cabin are very nice, and live nearby if you need anything. We will be back for sure.. (we are not hikers but there seems to be lots of great opportunites for hiking, and you are near LAke Abiquiu.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Just spent three very relaxing days at the cabin away from cell phones, email and other distractions (although they have wi-fi). Finally a chance to sit and catch up on reading. Canones is a gorgeous hidden valley that has beckoned us since our first drive up the pastoral canyon. The owners, Grace and Felix, are wonderful people—exceedingly gracious and hospitable. Plus, we were able to take our three small dogs, which is always a plus (the spiral staircase was a huge hit with one of them). Day drive included a trip to El Vado lake which was made even more spectacular by the first big rain of the season. This is some of the prettiest country in Northern New Mexico and the cute little cabin made it all the more enjoyable.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

My husband and I stayed here for our 25th Anniversary. We were delighted with the secluded setting and the rustic cabin, and even though it was the end of December, we were toasty warm. The owners made us feel very welcome and were sure to include everything we could possibly need in the cabin. On our last day there, it had snowed while we were out sightseeing and when we returned, the snow had even been shoveled away from the porch! Thank you Felix and Grace, for providing such a tranquil setting and making us feel like we were at home. This was a perfect romantic getaway for us.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

The road leading to the cabin runs along a babbling creek swirling among stunning southwestern landscape. I took nearly 100 photo's on this last 3 mile stretch before arriving at the cabin! The cabin is a haven of peace and serenity. I was fortunate enough to stay during a full moon. The porch is perfect for stargazing and moon rises *gasp* .The porch will become your vaction spot of choice but don't forget to get out and explore the vast wonder's of northern New Mexico. God's Country indeed. By the way, by the end of my 3 day stay I had taken well over 1000 awe inspiring photos and booked the cabin again the following month. Truly home away from home.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

I've just spent two weeks there, and I can say that it's the perfect place if you want to have great vacation time. If you like wilderness, hiking, nature, nice weather this is where you should go. The house itself has everything you need (even a washer and dryer that hare not mentioned), you can have your meals on the deck with superb view of the mountains, especially during breakfast when the sun is rising and the air is fresh, crisp and cool. The owners Mr and Mrs Valdez are very nice. The zucchinis they offered were excellent (especially on the BBQ). I definitively plan to get there again and I highly recommend the place.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
