Why the Owner Chose Balcones
San Miguel is quite simply a magical town whose unique location in the country insured that it would remain unspoiled by development. (It was away from the silver mines and their transportation routes.) The center of town is a gathering place for both tourists and residents alike. Walking mariachi bands serenade, children run and laugh and little old men sit and read the newspaper or just watch people. Many people prefer to live in the heart of the action, but we found that a short walk up the hill brings both proximity to the center and the peacefull quiet that we craved. The location is perfect!
The Unique Benefits at this Townhome
While you relax and enjoy your vacation, our maid, Ana, will tend to your needs and keep the house clean. Maribel the manager is on duty during the day in case of any urgent needs, and at night, you can rest easy knowing that the night watchman, Francisco is there. Our house is steps away from the pool and hot tub, and the large common area patio. After a full day of sight seeing, gallery hopping, and exploring, you can come home, make a margarita and sit on the terrace outside of your bedroom and watch the always spectacular sunset. You'll enjoy great views of the churches and the lake beyond.
Here you'll find block after block of local artisans selling everything from dishes to rugs and everything in between. Be sure to check out the sections dedicated to rugs and silver. Right next door
Walk to the beautiful botanical garden and see thousands of native plants.
Jardin is the Spanish word for garden, but this is so much more. It's really the hub of the town and the starting point for all sorts of adventures.
Here you'll find several out of the way galleries which have authentic folk art. There are always beautiful things for great prices.
This is the largest English language library in all of Latin America. Here is where you will go to take the fabulous house tour every Sunday. You will be shown through 2 or 3 of the best homes in Sa

Tom and I live in the San Francisco Bay area, and love it here, but we have always thought about retiring in Mexico to experience the slow life. We always thought about locating in or near beach towns, but after our neighbor returned from a visit to San Miguel in the colonial heartland of Mexico, we decided to take a vacation there to see what all the fuss was about. We packed our bags and with our then 11 year old son went to spend two weeks. To say we fell in love with San Miguel is an understatement. The sky is an amazing blue, the townspeople are warm and welcoming, and the weather is always mild. But best of all San Miguel has been largely untouched by development. In fact the nearly 500 year old center of town has recently been declared a World Heritage Site. By the time our vacation was over we knew we had found our second home.

My husband and I were so thrilled by the house to start, it's adorable charming, and so started the mood of the town and the vacation! We didn't spend too much time at the house but it was great to relax and stay home a couple nights and read while enjoying the view and taking a hot tub. The walk to the center of town and everywhere we wanted to visit was easy and we could come and go lickedy split. Loved every moment!

I had been to San Miguel twice before over 10 years ago arriving by car doing the colonial tour. I had been awe struck ever since. I begged my two sons to go with me to see for themselves why I was so in love with a city. Finally; 10 years later I struck a deal with one of them. I treated. We decided on this town home due to my son's criteria that it had to have a pool. This place was very colorful satisfying my requirements.I especially liked the fact you could in minutes arrive at the market place and center of artesanias. The hike back up the last blocks really did magic in 8 days for my hard to loose 5 pounds .It was a very satisfying walk. The maid service was kind of overkill. We weren't in the house that often but she still came to clean various times. It is a perfect place for a traveling group. We had so much space for just the two of us.The botanical garden is very close by and the most incredible place to visit. we wished we had discovered it earlier on. We rented a car which was not at all necessary. As a matter of fact.; we rented it on line ; arrived thinking we had a great deal only to find out Mexico does not accept rental insurance issued by travel web sites. It ended up hiking the price about 4 times. But since we thought we were in Leon near a bus stop; we found out you actually arrive in Silao and far from buses so we had to take the car. One tip; change pesos during day because the change houses close for the evening and it is hard to buy from carts at night without pesos. I highly recommend this house for anyone's vacation. I would return here again as would my son who only went in the pool 2 times!

We loved our stay in this beautiful house. We so much enjoyed the colonial style and the artwork. It was the perfect spot to relax after a day site seeing or studying Spanish. We enjoyed breakfast looking at the luxurious greenery of the garden and our evening drink from the upper balcony viewing the spires of SMA and the sun setting over the distant hills. Anna, the maid, is a gem and the bilingual on site manageress is very helpful and well informed
Owner response:Thanks so much Janet! I'm glad you mentioned studying Spanish. It reminded me to mention that there are several great language schools within a 5 minute walk of the house. The 3 we like the best are all in the center of town and ideally situated for having a quick cup of coffee before diving into your daily lesson. Saludos!

The house and the grounds are absolutely wonderful, clean and so well taken care of. We were picking fresh fruit off the trees outside the house, swimming after the lovely walk to town and back, and sleeping like babies in the very comfortable and beautifully decorated home. I say 'HOME' because that is what it feels like, from the moment you walk through the door. Carol and Tom's place was the perfect backdrop to my family's return visit to one of the most spectacular places in Mexico. Thank you for all of your patience and help as we planned our trip - we can't wait to go back!!!
Owner response:Thanks, Kim, for your very nice words. Thanks especially for saying that it felt like home to you. That's just what we wanted when we decided to buy a retirement house in San Miguel, and to share it with other folks like you who love San Miguel. And I'm so glad that you mentioned Anna. She's an absolute delight and we quite simply love her. We hope you'll come back! Carol

The view from the many patios of the house is spectacular. From donkeys walking up the cobblestone streets, to hot air balloons and, of course, Parroquia, one can experience San Miguel without stepping out of the luxurious environs. Anna, who keeps the house in tip-top shape was super sweet and even loving arranged my girls' stuffed animals on the bed. Plenty of helpful tour books and maps are in the house and most places are a nice walk down to town or a cheap taxi ride away. St. Augustine's has the best churros around and we loved the new toy museum "La Esquina." El Charco is a gem of a botanical garden and a must see, and if you are lucky to catch the multimedia presentation Friday night on the walls of Parroquia, you'll be amazed. A short taxi ride out to La Gruta, and you will have been officially spoiled with their hot springs and secret swimming tunnel. I see why people fall in love with San Miguel, and if you stay in this property, you are well on your way.

Thank you for sharing this incredible place with us! It's more or less my first time in Mexico, and it was truly a magical experience. For Jose it was more familiar, but he pays San Miguel a complement in saying he felt that he was at home here. We took day trips to Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalbo, but the best part was always coming back to Carol's place on "La Cuesta". I now own two pairs of San Miguel shoes. Your kitchen is the best in which to cook. We ate here a lot--can't say why, but it feels like a second home after one stay. We look forward to coming back soon.
