Skiing and Mountain Vacation Reservations in Red River, New Mexico. This townhouse is in an ideal location for skiing and enjoying the Town of Red River, located in the center of Town, right next to the ski lift.
If Claimjumper 8 is booked, or if you have a smaller group and like what you see, the owners of Claimjumper 8 also own Casa Nueva #6, which is VRBO listing #360307.
At the end of the forty minute drive from Taos, you will enjoy skiing in season, hiking, trout fishing, and four wheeling in summer.
The Town of Red River is located in the middle of the Carson National Forest with hiking trails leading, among other places, up to Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico. The Red River Ski Area offers snow skiing and snowboarding beginning on the Thanksgiving holidays and continuing through spring break. Even when the natural snow is not as plentiful, the Red River Ski Area has the best snow making in the State of New Mexico. Red River is just a fun town and is great for families. There is wonderful shopping and galleries, nice restaurants, and even places to two-step.
Claimjumper 8 has room for twelve guests! This three bedroom, two and a half bath townhouse sleeps twelve. Highlights include new furnishings, new decor, full kitchen, woodburning fireplace, wireless internet, and a washer/dryer in the unit. Sleeping accommodations include the master bedroom, featuring a King bed and private bath. The second bedroom has a King-size bed. The loft contains two Queen beds and twin-size bunk beds. A Queen sofa-sleeper is located in the living room.
What else is special about this townhouse rental? You will be staying at the base of the ski lift for skiing in the winter. This Claim Jumper Townhouse has a spectacular view of the ski area from every window and balcony, and is located on the river, and next to the fishing pond, both of which are stocked with trout for the summer. The townhouse is located in the center of town near dining and shopping. Art lovers will enjoy the numerous art galleries in both Red River and Taos, just forty minutes away.
Throughout the year you will have great fun watching the torchlight parade during ski season, and enjoying Mardi Gras in the Mountains during February, the Fine Art and Wine Festival in June, the 4th of July Parade, the Hot Chili Days, Cool Mountain Nights celebration in August, Aspencade Arts & Crafts Festival in September, and Oktoberfest in October.
The Visitors Center in Town Hall has some excellent material about the hiking trails and other enjoyable diversions in and around Red River.
The Red River Community House organizes guided hikes along with other activities. Some of these include very enjoyable tales about the history of Red River, and can be especially helpful for those who are not familiar with the mountain trails.
Hiking is generally much better in the mornings when the sun is shining, before the afternoon showers come in. Usually, the earlier, the better. It is always nice to hike around the Middle Fork area, and on the Goose Creek Trail. Middle Fork is a beautiful lake, and it is possible to hike up to Wheeler Peak from there, if you know where you are going. At the end of town, there is a nice hike from the Ditch Cabin site up to Sawmill Park which is a beautiful meadow. Mallette Park is a good place to take the kids for a picnic, or to play on the playground equipment or to even play tennis, disc golf, or a game of hoops. The lift is open during the summer as well as during ski season and there is a disc golf course on top of the ski mountain.
Questa is a short 12 mile drive, and from there, there is a road heading up to Cabresto Lake. There is a beautiful trail up behind that Lake, which goes up to Heart Lake (a gradual climb of a few miles), where you can look over onto the Latir Lakes. You can also drive up to the Midnight meadows and mines on the same road which runs from Questa to Cabresto. Just keep going. Then, you can go back to Red River on the road which goes over the mountains and comes out through Mallette Park back in the center of Red River.
The Valle Vidal runs from Costilla to Cimarron and is spectacular country.
The Wild Rivers Gorge is just north of Questa. It has some great views of and hikes into the Rio Grande Gorge. This is overlooked by most visitors, and it should not be missed.
At the east end of town, there is a Red River history museum in the Little Red School House. The library next door also has an excellent display of the history of Red River with some old photographs. The library offers a very nice selection of both DVD and VHS movies which may be borrowed, as well as books for those who are looking for something to read. Be sure to check when the Library is open.

The cabin is beautifully furnished; very quaint, but modern. My wife and friends and I really enjoyed our stay. Red River is a great little mountain village. From the cabin, we were able to walk to all the restaurants and shops in town as well as some hiking trails and a disc golf course. We drove 5-10 minutes to a trail head and hiked to about 13,000 ft to Lost Lake and back in about 7 hours. We really enjoyed our stay!Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

This was our second time to enjoy this lovely, cozy home perched right at the base of the mountain and overlooking a pristine pond just a few feet outside the front door! The property is always well maintained, clean and not lacking in any amenity. The owners of this wonderfully located condo have seen to every detail. The kitchen is well equipped and the bedrooms and living area are comfy, comfy! You walk out the front door to the base of the moountain and ski lift. Sit out on the glider swing with your glass of wine and enjoy the fishermen bringing in their catch! It is also conveniently located to the center of the charming little town of Red River - no need to get in the car! We would recommend this lovely end unit condo to couples or families - works well for both situations.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

We have stayed at Claimjumper 8 several times and it is always wonderful. The condo is updated, cozy, and very roomy. Being on the end of the condo unit makes the rooms light and airy, and all with great views of the mountains. TVs on all three levels are perfect for a family to enjoy different entertainment in the evening. The location is ideal for skiing, hiking and fishing. Hiking is our favorite. We will come back as many times as we can.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

We stayed in late June (mainly for some hiking in the area). On a side note, I was impressed with how close this place was to the ski lifts. It would be a perfect place to stay for the ski season, as well. During the time we were there, the weather was lovely and so were the accommodations. This place was a perfect place to stay for our vacation. It made a great home base for all the activities we had planned and there was plenty of space for all of us. It was nice to come back from a long day of hiking to such a homey and comfortable setting. We also were so close to downtown that we could walk to any store or restaurant that we wanted. Overall, this place ensured that we had an awesome vacation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We started coming to Red River for our annual family ski vacation in 1989. We have stayed in this townhome over ten times. Too many to count! We are always disappointed when it is already reserved. Since there have been so many family memories made there, it seems like a second home. This is by far the BEST place to stay in Red River. It is very comfortable and the views are spectacular. We are always sad to leave, but look forward to staying there again!Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, tourists without a car.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Vicky and Josh Harrison visiting Lucerne, Switzerland in August of 2008. Vicky is a landscape, wildlife, and portrait artist. Josh is an attorney practicing commercial law in The Woodlands, Texas.
Why the Owner Chose Red River:
Vicky and her family have been coming to Red River since the 1950's. Red River is like a second home to us. We particularly love the friendliness of the Town, walking to the nearby shops and galleries, as well as hiking in the mountains. We also enjoy just being there, whether we are out and about, or just hanging around the townhouse.
The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
This townhouse is unique in that it is an end unit, which overlooks the fishing pond. And, because it is located on the end, the interior is brighter due to the additional windows on the side facing the pond, enabling guests to enjoy the outdoor scenery from inside as well as from the porches and balconies. There are spectacular views of the "Face" and the rest of the mountain without ever leaving the unit.
