Accommodations:  House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-7)

Enjoy a truly unique Florida Keys experience in this three-bedroom, two-bath home with a large tropical yard, beautifully landscaped with many types of palm trees, scheffleras, hibiscus, and fruit trees including banana, mango, and key lime. The home is located on a clear canal in beautiful, quiet and exclusive lower Sugarloaf Key. The home is two levels, above a carport for parking and storage convenience. The spacious main floor deck has a screened-in area for outdoor dining and relaxing, and the upper deck is perfect for watching the amazing sunsets over the water.

The canal is deep, clean and cool for swimming, with a large dock surrounded by palm trees, affording plenty of room for sunning, fishing, or just sitting in the shade enjoying the sea breeze and the smell of the fresh salty air. Keep your boat tied to the dock, and enjoy a quick and easy ride to the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. On your return, you can clean your fish at the dock and grill them on the deck.

Go for a fabulous kayak or snorkeling adventure right from the backyard. An outdoor shower is on site for a cool rinse after a day of fun on the water. The Sugarloaf Marina is less than two miles away. A half hour drive up the Keys is Bahia Honda State Park, one of Florida's premier beaches, and a twenty-minute drive down the Keys lands you in Key West.

The interior of the home is freshly painted, with new baseboards and ceramic tile in the lower level common areas. New carpet has just been installed in the two lower bedrooms. Hardwood floors adorn the beautiful sunroom, office space, and master bedroom suite on the upper level. Recently upholstered wicker, wood and iron furniture, new blinds, and interesting custom artwork are located throughout the home. The master and one of the guest bedrooms have queen size beds. The other guest bedroom has a full bed and a twin bed. All mattresses have been updated and are very comfortable. You may also choose to snooze in the brand new hammock, gently swaying above a sandy beach area beneath the house.

The sunroom also has a comfortable new sleeper - futon, allowing up to seven adults to sleep comfortably. French doors open to the decks, and the many windows throughout allow plenty of sunlight and fresh sea breeze to fill this home. Take off your shoes, blend a frozen fruit beverage, kick back and listen to the ocean wind blowing through the palm trees. You will be amazed how time seems to slow down in this tropical island paradise!

Why the Owner Chose Sugarloaf Key

I fell in love with the Florida Keys the first time I visited, while on vacation during the time of my residency training in Jacksonville, Florida. I am always amazed and refreshed by the Caribbean lifestyle, available here in the continental US ... the sun, the smell of the salt air, the palm trees swaying in the breeze, the abundant wildlife ... and the relaxing peaceful atmosphere. I have always loved the ocean, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to own a home in such a spectacular place, where I can share my home with family, friends, and tenants.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Sugarloaf Key is such a special and inviting island - close to Key West, but without the tourists. Walking or biking down Sugarloaf Blvd in the early morning is tranquil and invigorating. The canal behind my home is shorter than most canals in the Keys, and being on the west side of Sugarloaf Blvd it is constantly washed clean by the tide. The result is cool, deep and clean water ... perfect for watching the fish swim by ... or joining them for a refreshing dip or float on a raft. The wildlife is abundant ... you will likely see bright green iguanas, groups of long beaked ibis, various fish and water life in the canal, and if you are lucky perhaps even a great white heron or a tiny key deer ... a species known only to the Florida Keys.

Owner's Map of Sugarloaf Key

I am an ER Doctor, currently living in Austin, Texas. I have lived and worked in Florida in the past, including Key West, and this is the first home I purchased. The flexibility of my current schedule in the Emergency Room allows me to visit my home regularly, and I always spend time upgrading, customizing, and otherwise looking to improve the vacation experience for my tenants.

    • The Sugar Shack is definitely a place to visit! We had such a great week at this quiet, well stocked house. We snorkeled right off the dock - seeing barricuda, lobsters and crabs. It's in easy distance to the bustle of Key West and the beach at Bahia State Park. Bill was very easy to work with. If you go, definitely have Larry take you out on his boat to your own private beach! We'll be back!

    • We spent a wonderful week in the Sugar Shack. It is very well located, being near to Key West and Big Pine Key. We enjoyed the neighborhood and walked several miles each morning and evening. The sunsets from the top deck were glorious. The area is very quiet which is important to us and the house is well-equipped.

    • We have been staying at the "Sugar Shack" for the past three years and love the place. It isn't the biggest home on the block but it is a nice, quiet, comfortable place to enjoy the Lower Keys style of living. The area is quiet and safe. The residents in the area are friendly and we feel at home when we visit there. The sunsets from the second floor deck are as good as they get. Easy access to back country and reef fishing is a real asset. The owner has tried to upgrade something each yrar and is someone who"cares" about his renters. I have never met the owner, but I feel like I know him as if he were my neighbor. If you are planning to rent a quiet, comfortable place with great sunsets from the second floor deck......don't rent this place in February........... WE WILL BE THERE!!!!!!!

    • This was our second rental experience with VRBO, the first experience was marginal but working with Bill was great. Bill was always prompt to reply to our questions and his follow-up was excellent. We agree with previous guests' comments, nice quiet location, great views, great house. We recommend this property and think others will enjoy it as much as our family did.

    • My husband and I had vacationed in Key West last year and wanted to take our children this year. We picked the SugarShack. We all loved it. My son (17) has always loved spiral staircases since he was small. We spent much time on the screened in porch watching the iguana. The kids also loved the coconut trees. My husband fished from the dock and did actually catch a few! Hope you get to go sometime!!

    • We stayed at the Sugar Shack in May for our annual trip to Key West. It was definitely a memorable vacation as we caught and released a 300lb blue marlin. We also caught several dolphin, the biggest weighing 47lbs and a 25lb wahoo. Waking up with the boat already in the water was great! We truly enjoyed our stay at the Sugar Shack!

    • When we decided to run off to Key West to get Married, we needed a home base. Having never been there before this was a bit of a challenge. We choose the Sugar Shack because of it's location and views...we were not disappointed! It was perfect! Cute, cozy, clean, in a nice quiet neighborhood, well stocked and safe. We fell in love with the Sugar Shack! The home Owner was easy to work with and very friendly. We would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a nice quiet place to escape still within easy driving distance to Key West and right around the corner from Big Pine and Bahia Honda. Wonderful Home! Thanks for sharing! We will be back.
