Villa Zama is a family owned beach house located on the white sand beaches of Tankah Bay, just a couple miles north of Tulum. This breezy house offers a unique experience for those with a love of the natural beauty of this area, the local culture and an independent spirit. Villa Zama is a true beach house, and we have tried to keep it that way. With a front terrace and doors that open up the house to the ocean breeze and a second floor terrace with a view of the entire bay and the blackest night sky, this Villa is a special place for those who love the outdoors.
The world's second longest coral reef protects the bay and offers endless opportunities for snorkeling, diving, swimming and exploring in our two sea kayaks. Away from the tourist developments, you can enjoy your private beach, experience the blackest starlit skies from our terrace and sunbathe or siesta in the shade of a palapa covered patio. Just down the road is a well known beach bar/restaurant with great food and opportunities to meet fellow travelers from all over the world.
We have a wonderful Mexican family who live in a small house near the Villa who offer daily service, hospitality and 24 hour security. They have been our only caretakers since we built the house in 1997. Our guests consistently comment on how much they appreciate Erasto and Consuelo being nearby and their extraordinary garden of tropical plants. Within a few minutes drive is the Mexican village of Tulum and the small beach community of Akumal with all its restaurants, local Mexican culture, art, dive shops, information, shopping and markets.
You have endless recreational opportunities including the Mayan ruins, eco parks, wildlife, fresh water snorkeling, golf, horseback riding and a must visit to the lively town of Playa Del Carmen for people watching and shopping. Discover this wonderful part of the Mayan Riviera.

Villa Zama, Leave it All Behind, Experience Real Beach Living
Why the Owner Chose Tankah
We found out about this lot by accident and bought it at first site. Tankah Bay had only a few houses and a well known beach restaurant next to the cenote. No electricity or public utilities. In 10 years, electricity came and more Villas have been built. For us, Villa Zama remains the same quiet, private and beautiful beach house home for those who love the outdoors.
The Unique Benefits at this House
For our family and past guests, one easily falls into a pattern of going to bed early, getting up early to watch the sunrise(maybe from the bed), coffee and breakfast on the terrace and then a day of swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, reading, siestas (after lunch in Tulum), some cold cerveza and dinner with friends and family under the stars or at one of the many excellent area restaurants. You will be impressed with the variety of Mexican, South American and European cuisine. We have not installed telephones and computor access so far because it is easily available in Tulum and on the bay. We prefer to remove the temptation for awhile. We hope will try it.
Owner's Map of Tankah
We are five brothers who bought this property in 1997 and built Villa Zama to share with family and as a vacation rental. We all love the outdoors and the house was designed by a brother/achitect with the idea that it should be open to the beach and offer an alternative to simply a house that happens to be on a beach. Our caretakers, Erasto and Consuelo, have been with us since the beginning and their casita is their home. They have developed an extraordinary garden and provide a warm but unobtrusive caretaker service. Guests always comment on how their experience was so special because Villa Zama felt like a welcoming home and not a tourist destination. They represent the best of the Mexico.

I enjoyed a lovely stay with my family in September. This place is absolutly beautiful and very relaxing, especially without the phone and internet access. One thing i also love about the house is that if you want your quality time alone, the rooms are perfect, and i love the tilework in the bathrooms...BEAUTIFUL!!! But if you want to spend time with the family, ythe central portions of the house are perfect for that. You can lay out on the porch, or sit at the dinner table together, or in the living room. Great house! My family and i actually sat around the table and played cards, enjoyed beer, and great converstaiton together. The caretakers do respect your privacy but are very helpful if you have questions. We enjoyed using the kayaks provided, walking up and down the beach, seeing the blue crab along the roads as we walked to the nearby restaurant. We also enjoyed exploring Tulum and the Tulum ruins. Consulo also told me that there are times when sea turtles will lay there eggs on the beach and after hatching will make there way to the water. How adorable! We also drove up to Akumel for some snorkling and delicous food. I enjoyed every minute of our trip. =)

I've stayed at Villa Zama twice in the past few years -- once during hurricane season (August) and once in November and had a fantastic time both trips. AND, during the hurricane season trip, there was actually a hurricane! Stressful, but also an adventure -- the hurricane wasn't close enough to my flight dates, so I couldn't get a refund, so I decided to have an adventure vacation! Now, for the vacation most people are looking for, Villa Zama is also the perfect place. It is serene and private, with great snorkeling out the front door and tasty dining a quick walk down the beach. Arrosto and Consuelo are the caretakers who live on site, and they're great hosts who are helpful when you need them but also respect your privacy. The routine I tended to follow was to wake and make coffee and drink it on the roof patio with my companions, then eat breakfast and snorkel. This was followed by reading on the lawn chairs or hammocks with a pina colada (blender provided), Dinner can be made at home (Arrosto and Consuelo can point you to the best fish markets) or you can head out on the town for traditional mexican or any number of other cuisines you may be craving. Villa Zama is a tropical home away from home that I'd recommend to anyone seeking relaxation, sun, and fun. Whatever your vacation inclinations, Villa Zama will fit the bill!

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend at Villa Zama. The house is beautiful, the beach is wonderful. The care takers of the property are warm and friendly—even able to reach across the language barrier to make us feel welcome! We enjoyed the short walk along the beach to a restaurant, the nearby cenote, and the proximity to Tulum. It was an easy drive straight south after flying into Cancun. We plan to return and bring friends or family with us to enjoy this gem.
