Property description

Chateau de Lauzel is a six bedroom, ten person chateau, located within 24 hectares of woodland, being part of the forested valley and extends on its southern boundary to the middle of the Beune River in the valley.

In the cliff face to the east of the Chateau is a huge, troglodyte Pigeonnier, currently gated and inaccessible to the public. Futher up the valley is the site of the Venus de Laussel, classified as a 'Site Historique,' dating back some 25,000 years.

On the western boundary of the site is the Abri du Cap Blanc, containing notable Magdalenian friezes which is open to the public.

As the site is set on a hillside, terminating in a vertical drop between 15 and 20 metres into the valley, the stunning terraces and gardens occur on a series of delightful levels. Outside of the wall of the Chateau's courtyard there is a large, traditional, formal parterre garden with shady seating areas.

At a lower level, adjacent to the C17th chapel, is a D-shaped swimming pool.

The ground floor of Chateau de Lauzel has a large vaulted entrance hall connected to the main circular staircase, utility room and cellar. The Hall opens onto a large south facing terrace overlooking the valley and Chateau Commarque.

The Salon is at first floor level along with the dining room, the galleries and fully equipped kitchen which includes dishwasher, microwave, electric ovens, gas and electric hob.

On the second floor are two large double bedrooms each with a shower room, containing a hand basin and WC. All the shower rooms are similarly equipped with walls and floors finished in white mosaic tiling.

On the third floor there is an Octagonal Room containing a Jacuzzi of 2m diameter, shower, hand basin, bidet and WC.

In the Small Tower there are two single bedrooms, one at the ground floor and one at the first floor, each with a wet room containing a hand basin, shower and WC.

On both the third and fourth levels, in the square Donjon, there are two further double bedrooms. These bedrooms are not equipped with en suite bathrooms but are both within easy reach of the Jacuzzi Room.

The six bedrooms can sleep up to a total of 10 persons in comfort. Access to all upper levels is by circular stone staircases which are not suitable for young children or disabled persons.

Chateau De Lauzel is situated in Department 24, the Dordogne, in the South West region of France and lies between the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil (5 km) and the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Caneda (15 km) in the canton of Marquay (5 km).

The surrounding area includes many Cro-Magnon sites. Les Eyzies, the world capital of pre-history, is located on the River Vezere and has a new National Palaeolithic Museum which displays an excellent account of this period. The well-known cave of Lascaux is approximately 15 km north east of Les Eyzies.

This is a region of numerous Chateaux and historical abbeys and contains many villages classified as ‘The Most Beautiful Villa???s in France.?? The region also includes several ??bastide������������ (fortified) villages built by the English and French during the 15th century such as Monpazier and Beaumont.

The local rivers, the Dordogne and the Vezere, provide canoeing expeditions and site seeing river boats. Hot air ballooning, helicopter trips and tourist flights in light aircrafts are also offered locally.

The town of Sarlat has a season of many exhibitions, musicians and nocturnal events together with bustling market days and a complete variety of restaurants and shops of all standards.

The nearest airports are Bergerac (54 km from Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil) served by Ryanair and Flybe, Brive-La-Gaillarde (74 km from Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil) served by Air France and City Jet and Bordeaux Merignac (186 km from Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil) served by Easy jet, British Airways and Air France.

By sea, Brittany Ferries serve Caen (Ouistrenham) with both day and night services. Caen is 603 km north of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil. Most of the journey from Caen to Les Eyzies-de-Tayac Sireuil uses the French auto-routes and includes a section on the A20 which is toll free. The 841 km journey from Calais to Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil also uses the auto-routes with a section on the toll free auto- route A20.
