Friends who used to stay at Kapoho Makai (and now own property nearby they loved it so much) recommended this property, and we were thrilled by our stay here. The ability to snorkel right outside the deck, some of the best fish diversity I've seen in Hawaii, and gorgeous views are just the start here. The kitchen is well-equipped and we cooked great meals for ourselves and our friends, were able to mix great cocktails with the equipment provided, and loved waking up and having coffee on the deck to a Pacific sunrise. We're definitely staying here again, and recommend it very very highly. You won't want to leave.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

You just can't describe the area in words and the pix don't do it justice. No negative surprises except some tiny sugar ants that loved the toilet paper one night. Weird! The view and the sea breeze off the lanai was incredible! The jungle was lush and we loved the narrow coast Red Road under the tree canopy. Snorkling at the Kapoho tide pools was awesome. DO NOT MISS THE NIGHT EXCURSION ON THE LAVA BOAT WITH CAPT. SHANE! It's a rough ride but no worse than prolonged bad air turbulence and they lay it on heavy with the disclaimers but don't let em talk you out of it. We also took a tour to the telescopes on Mauna Kea. Pricey as well but a must if you are an astronomy buff or REALLY wanna see the prestine night sky light up with stars. This is not the side of the island for you if you wanna lay on the beach every day. Little or no beaches on this side of the island except a nude black sand beach and its an all day trip to Kona and back where the nice beaches are. We never even went over there, as so much to see on the Hilo side. Atmosphere on the Hilo side is very laid back. Little town of Pahoa was quaint. Lots of true Hippies and youngster wannabes in the area especially down by the Kalapana lava flows a few miles from the house. Shops in Pahoa reflect that and are very interesting. Swap meets at Pahoa and the Kalapana Village Cafe on Sun and Wed were fun. Excellent Hawaiian breakfasts at the Kalapana Vill Cafe mile down the street on edge of the lava flow that wiped out Kalapana. Super food at Kaleo's in Pahoa for way less $ than you'd expect for the quality. Regrets? 1) My wife scared of helicopters or would toured the island and flown over the volcano. 2) Missed the whales by a few days. Maaaybeeee we saw one breaching way up the coast from house but couldn't see it even with the binoculars. There are two sets and a spotting scope at the house. Direct TV worked well for us a couple of nights. Rented a jeep with every intention of seeing Southpoint and green sand beech but rental contract forbid it EVEN IN A 4WD JEEP! Warning! Stay away from Lava Tree and Mackenzie Parks after dark or girls alone. Very secluded and often you are alone. Overall: Highly recommend! But remember, beeches scarce but snorkeling excellent. Aloha and Mahalo!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This is a nice place to stay in Kapoho, and is very quiet and peaceful. This house sits right over the Kaphoho tide pools, although the water only surrounds the house at high tide, and snorkeling close to the house is only possible at high tide, so you have to time it. And at high tide the road in one spot has several inches of water on it, so you must drive through it carefully. There is a flight of steep stairs to get into the house, but the living quarters are all on one floor. The house is small but comfortable, and the furnishings are, by and large, of high quality. The lounge chairs on the lanai are the most comfortable ever! The large covered lanai is great because it does rain fairly frequently there. And the kitchen is well-supplied with dishes, etc. plus some staple items like oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, etc. But it is a long way to the nearest grocery store, so be sure to shop before you arrive. The water is good, because it is on the county water system, unlike some places in Kapoho which use rainwater systems. The beds were comfortable. There were screens on the windows, so we could have good air circulation, and were never uncomfortably hot. There are ceiling fans in the living room and bedrooms. It would be nice if the front door also had a screen. Three things to be aware of: the half-bath in the master bedroom is just a former clothes closet with a toilet and sink in it, and just the sliding mirrored closet doors for closure. And the second bedroom is set off from the living room by a thin wall that does not go to the ceiling, so sounds carry through the wall. Cell phone reception is limited to one tiny spot in the master bedroom next to the window. But there is a good wifi router for Internet, and there is a landline phone for local calls. Food shopping is best at Malama Market on the north end of Pahoa, next to the highway. There is also a Long's Drugs there. We love going to dinner at Kaleo's Restaurant in Pahoa, where you can have a free dessert if you can dance a hula, and on Wednesday evenings there is a small farmers' market/food/crafts/music event at the end of the road in Kalapana. The drive down the coast from Kapoho to Kalapana is beautiful. There is a very large farmers' market on the highway just north of Pahoa on weekends with food and crafts, too, and a small area with petroglyphs there.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We just returned from our trip to the Big Island and wanted to share our experience of this place. We had an incredible time at this rental. It was the end of our two week trip and we couldn't have ended at a better place. The sunrise lava boat tour we did was literally 5 minutes away and a very memorable expereince. The house is also conveniently located for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The best part was of course snorkeling in the Tide Pools. We were a bit skeptical having been to some of the "top" snorkeling spots throughout our trip, but this place ranked right up there with the best. The corals were amazing and the fish spectacular. The water also seemed to be a bit warmer here than elsewhere. We would highly recommnd this place to anyone interested in a fun getaway. Thanks so much to the owners. You guys do a great job making your guests feel welcomed. We loved all the details you have put into the house. We hope to see stay here again real soon.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We spent 6 days in this unit and loved every minute of our stay. The views and tide pools and serenity are just second to none. You see ocean and nothing else. There is a house next door but no one was ever there. If I looked around to the back of the house there were 2 houses with lights on across the street and one way up the coast. It felt like we were on our own private island. We loved watching the moon and stars light up the tide pools at night. So beautiful. Kids chased geckos and watched fish in the shallows in the mornings while we drank coffee and enjoyed the views. House has 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed. One mattress was better than the other. There is a full bathroom with washer/dryer and tub and a second toilet and sink in the closet of the back bedroom. Kitchen has full fridge, dishwasher, sink and lots of cooking utensils and pans. There is a grill out on the deck. There is one TV and wireless internet. Hardwood floors and wood beam ceiling add to the tropical ambiance of the house. Our family is from Alaska and kids were a little freaked out by ants, but by tropical standards they were minimal as long as you kept kitchen clean and trash taken out. We all loved the geckos. Kids are now obsessed with them. The house is about a 10-15 minute drive from Pahoa. Pahoa has 5 or 6 nice restaurants. We tried Mings Thai, the Mexican place and Kaleo's. Kaleo's is fancier and very nice. Thai and Mexican were both good as well. There is also another Thai place, a pizza parlor, healthfood store, and a fancier Italian place. Pahoa is quirky and super laid back. There is nothing "resorty" about this part of the island. Hilo was about a 30 minute drive (more or less depending on time of day). It was about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to get to the Kona side of the island. The Ahalanui heated spring is about 5 minutes up the road and is wonderful and an easy place to swim. Isaac Hale Park is about 10 minutes up the road and is where we launched to go on a boat tour to see active lava. The Black Sand beach is at the end of the road and you walk through cooled lava fields to get to it and can see the steam line of lava coming down the mountain off in the distance. They do a farmer's market at the end of the road on Wednesdays. The Volcano Park is about a 45 minute drive from the house. If you like serenity and life a little more off the beaten path... this is where you want to be.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This week should not have been a rental week. The expectation for a vacation rental is that all as described is in working order. We WERE NOT forewarned that work was being done to the septic system during our stay. SAT on arrival there was heavy equipment and piles of crush stone. The stairway leading up to the residence was used for storage of construction equipment. The phone/internet was not working and the caretaker was called immediately to report this with our cell phone (international long distance roaming charges incurred for all our calls). SUN – We were visited by the septic inspector. MON - The crew arrived to work on the septic. They were most apologetic about doing this work during our vacation. TUE – No update of the phone situation and no answer with the caretaker, so the owners were called. We were told it was not the caretaker's responsibility for the phone. Are we the vacationers responsible? WED - The caretaker had arranged use of the phone/internet with the owners of another rental property so at least we could make reservations and confirm bookings without added cell phone costs. We were also visited by the health inspector to do a final inspection and the septic personnel returned to install a small valve. Once again the septic person was very apologetic. THURS - Hawaiian Tel visit and finally phone/internet restored. The rental itself was cute and some thought was put into the decor however - missing screen presented a problem with keeping the place cool. One window had to be closed when it rained because of electronic equipment and the other screen-less window and doors had to be closed in the evening because of the bugs. Almost lost the screen in the bedroom window when it was opened. The toilet handle required periodic adjustment otherwise the toilet kept making a leaking sound. We could see into the interior wall via the shower fixture. The kitchen sink is cracked and was surprised that it did not leak into the cabinet. Only the front BBQ burner works. The kitchen knife set requires professional sharpening and the chef's knife is no longer usable. The place itself was clean and tidy, however the sofa/ table chair cushions are in need of a good steam cleaning. The beach towel gift was nice touch by the owners. Although this is not the fault of the owners, the house beside the rental was under renovation so Mon-Fri all we heard was radio music/hammering/electric saw equipment...so much for a relaxing week by the ocean.Owner response: We are very sorry that the septic tank had to be replaced during your stay. It was required and the timing was immediate. As you might know, getting any service people out to a job site in Hawaii is unpredictable at best and always slow. Like the phone companies 4 day response to the downed service line. We have addressed the other maintenance issues you mentioned and appreciate your notes. The house is booked continually and we sometimes miss the details.

This was my family's fourth trip to the Big Island, but our first stay in the Kapoho area. We were looking for new snorkel adventures and Kapoho Makai did not disappoint. The property is comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated. The listing and photos were very accurate. The owners were very helpful and accommodating. The Waipao tidepools were a blast for both the novice and experienced snorkelers in our group. This property is perfect for a peaceful getaway to watch the sunrise, sit on the deck and read, or to explore the tidepools in the lava pools at low tide. The listing was accurate and directions to the house were clear and easy to follow. Of particular help was the suggestion to purchase whatever food and necessities might be needed prior to driving to the house. It is "remote" in that there are no stores or restaurants within the area. This adds to the charm of the location. The house was clean and well-equipped. There were charming decorations which stuck with the theme of Hawaii! Believe the sign that warns of the road being covered by water during high tide. We had to park away from the driveway for awhile, then retrieve the car and park it in the covered area! There is a designated area for snorkeling and exploring the tidepools just a few houses down the road. There is also an area set aside to protect natural habitat. Both are easily accessible by foot and interesting, regardless of the time one visits. The owner provided accurate descriptions, directions, and advice concerning the property. She was accessible through internet connection and promptly answered any questions we had. The house contains a landline as well as internet access. Cable TV is also provided. We were delighted with our choice of renting this house and would definitely and enthusiastically recommend it to our friends. Thanks for an enjoyable and relaxing experience.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Owner response: many mahalos for you review, we are always working to improve both kapohomakai and kehenamakai and have begun repainting the interior of kapoho since your stay. For those unfamiliar with kapohomakai, when they say snorkeling out the front door, this is in the ocean in a preserve and not a pond in the yard as this cottage is in the ocean at high tide, really

Kapoho is one of our favorite places on the Big Island, and this trip, we planned enough time to truly enjoy the beauty and aloha of this special place. Sunshine, moonrise, tides, storms that blow in and out so fast and dramatic add to the reasons we wanted to stay forever! We snorkeled and I believe w saw a purple octopus! We hiked out to the lava flow; at Uncle Robrt's on both Saturdays and Wednesdays there're live music, friendly neighbors...Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

My husband and I spent 11 fabulous days enjoying Kapoho, our favorite place in the islands, from December 14-25, 2011. The house has an unbelievable view that cannot be reflected in photos, with safe, easy access to the tidepools. You can even see and hear the ocean from the back rooms of the house! It was clean, comfortable and adorable with its island hut decor. With our bird's eye view from the lanai, we were entertained just watching the pools fill and empty with fish flipping around and moving in and out of streams of water between the lava. The big cushy lounge chairs on the lanai are to die for - especially after a long lava hike! We had dramatic showers that blew in suddently and past over quickly, leaving us with fresh air and sunshine. We found a welcoming neighborhood, fabulous snorkeling (saw a He'e (octopus), had the adventure of a lifetime as we were guided to the lava flow from Kalapana, There, at the end of the red road, we unexpectedly happend onto an all-day festival; a free concert of talented Hawaiian musicians, friendly people, and local specialties of food and crafts. We enjoyed peaceful nights with incredible star-gazing, and awesome sunrises. The owners provided excellent directions and information about the area. This is our third time to Kapoho, we highly recommend this property, and we plan to return as often as possible.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our 2nd stay at Kapoho Makai. Had to return to this magical and mystical place on this special date 11-11-11. This is our favorite spot to re-learn how to relax and just BE. Beds in the house are comfy and the yellow chairs outside on the lanai are wonderful. Made friends with a few geckos that found their way inside. Snorkeling here is fantastic. What brought us back is the unique location of the house to experience the high and low tides. Great house, great experience.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

My wife and two sons just got back from the Big Island and were lucky enough to spend 6 night at the Kapoho Makai . During the day the view out over the lava tide pools was beautiful and the snorkeling was diverse with schools of fish even inside the houses breakwater at high tide ! The view at sunset and into the nightime was out of this world ! We spent hours out on the deck enjoying the view and relaxing . A weird thing with the location is that while the rest of the Puna area spent much of the day in clouds and showers ,the area arround the coastline was for the most part sunny and clear , with a light breeze to keep it fresh ! The Famers market on Sunday morning was fun with a wide range of fresh produce and other Stuff ! We used the BBQ and made dinner on the deck each night as we were not looking for fine dining in a restaraunt. Come here to relax and forget the city ! That is what a vacation here should be about !Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our family of four had a great time. The house was exactly as described and worked perfectly for our needs. The location was BEAUTIFUL. Up every morning for great sunrises! Snorkeled in the tidepools. We snorkeled on 3 islands and this was BY FAR the best overall for variety of sea life and clarity of water. LOVED IT. A couple things to be aware of: no AC, but that's OK, 'cause the breeze kept us cool and we slept like babies. Could have used twin beds in bedroom #2 'cause we had 2 kids, but we drew straws for couch-sleeping. :) Well appointed house with all we needed and more. My 14 year old son and I had a relaxed and happy stay in this home while exploring the east side of the island. It is an easy trip into Hilo or to the Volcanoes national park. The view from the ocean-front bedroom and the lanai is lovelier than the pictures can convey. The kitchen is very user-friendly with everything we needed for fixing dinner, and the sink island and dishwasher made clean-up easy. I would stay here again without hesitation. My son was so impressed with the "awesome" house and the "amazing" snorkeling (his first time) in the tidepools, and as a 14 year old he is difficult to impress. We spent a month here in March. Being right on the edge of the sea, watching the changing tides and exploring the lava pools was fascinating. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. We were able to self cater, which was a nice change as we had been travelling for several months. The supermarket on the edge of Pahoa was well stocked. We can't comment on nearby restaurants as we hardly ate out. Having a car is essential as its about 30 miles to Hilo. We very much enjoyed visiting and walking in the Volcanoes National Park.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.

This home is absolutely beautiful with an incredible location. The Kapoho area is pretty secluded and a little ways from Hilo - but exactly what we were looking for in a vacation rental. The home is about 1 hour away from Hawaii Volcano National Park. When we weren't at the National Park or heading past Hilo for the waterfalls, we were enjoying the deck and hammock. The kids loved playing and exploring on the lava rocks in the tidepools (they were a little scared to snorkel). We snorkled and saw pufferfish, eels, Moorish idols, convict tangs, etc. The home is only 20-30 minutes away from the current lava viewing area. We didn't have much luck with the lava viewing (they had people set up way too far back to see anything), but the drive through the rainforest roads was mesmerizing. Watching the clouds, sunsets and the incredibly bright stars was such a nice way to end each day. The property had everything we needed with all the comforts of home. The home is very clean and well stocked. The pictures on the website are accurate, but it doesn't do it justice. We definitely hope to come back someday. Mahalo Susanna!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This place is amazing! It was our best stay on the Big Island (better than a super luxurious hotel in Kohala and a fancy, but soulless, cabin in the rainforest). The place is very welcoming, we felt at home as soon as we walked in. There was nothing we missed. The location, right on the water, is unbeatable as well. We could swing in a hummock on the beautiful, spacious deck, all day or go just down the stairs and snorkel in the tide pools. We had out meals on the tastefully furnished deck as well, and at night, a glass of wine under the beautiful full moon with it's reflection in the ocean beneath us. This place is absolutely unforgettable and we can't wait for the chance to come back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Aloha Susanna, We have stayed in some wonderful places on the Big Island, but once again we were completely captivated by your magical house. We were so busy just sitting on the deck watching sunrise, watching the stars, lying in the hammock, exploring the tidepools, and snorkeling, that we neglected to leave time to write in your book to tell you so. Of course, the setting is breathtaking and unmatchable, but the house too is so comfortable, with all the necessary items and many extra touches that make it feel just right. We have friends who live in Leilani and we liked being close to them, close to Pahoa, close to Ahalanui, close to all the wonderful places along 137. Anyway, I could go on and on, but suffice to say that we'll return as soon as possible and try to rent your Kapoho Makai house for two weeks next time instead of one. Mahalo for opening your home to lucky visitors like us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband I am truly enjoyed a week-long get away in this sea-side retreat. The house is extremely well appointed with every kitchen utensil you could imagine. There were plenty of sheets, towels, and other linens to make our stay very comfortable. The wood floors and other decor are lovely at not at all tired. The snokeling just downstairs is unbelievable and should be enjoyed everyday you are there. Be aware that this property is a considerable drive from restaurants and other tourist attractions, but that is part of what makes it so perfect - you don't want to go any where else anyway.Did you find this review helpful? Thank you so much for making this spectacular vacation home available to us! From the crystal clear coral gardens, gorgeous views, and fascinating "jungle" drives and whales - we had a wonderful time! McKenzie park, Kehena Black Sand beach, viewing the volcanic steam - all were great! We look forward to coming back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thanks for sharing this wonderful home with us. We really enjoyed the view, tidepools and fishing (to the left of the sigh of course). The sea turtles, fish and other wildlife were amazing. We will definitely come back. We stayed at many places on the island and this is by far the best! The lava flows were great too!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were pleasantly surprised that the house was as nice as advertised. For my seven year old boy it was like an adventurous, week long oceanic field trip. From our first morning upon arrival when we found a comical reef octopus, through end of the week snorkeling with sea turtles, we discovered so many creatures. it was great to have the book collection to I.D. our finds, watching the moon light tidal changes was one of our favorites, we even spotted breaching grey whales one evening just past the breaks. The property was just what we needed to break up the minnesota winter. we will be back! Grandparents write: for two seniors, this was a dream come true. Walking on the lava out to sea was remarkable. We had never snorkeled before, it was so cool. This place is what every oceanside should have.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

This is a great house with some awesome views. The sun was amazing almost everyday. Even when it is overcast it is gorgeous because the sun gets so hot. Hopefully we get to come back soon.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is a great home and what a view! We loved the high tide, completely surrounds the house, floods the driveway and the road, or plan to stay in or out during the highest tide - it can rise a few inches up the car tires! It was nice and warm even under over-cast skies, we loved the weather and didn't mind the rain at all. It was really nice to have an extra bathroom - always comes in handy. This house is very well stored. Wish we could stay longer!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Thank you for anticipating the needs! Everything we needed were within reach. Our only mistake was planning for one week's stay rather then two.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
