About this property

Organic vineyard/ olive farmhouse with superb views of the Mountains/valley

A beautifully restored, warm and very welcoming farmhouse with a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to all aspects of our activity. Sleeps up to 8 with full kitchen; dining room; sitting room; 2 bathrooms; outside dining, lounge, grilling and children's play areas all set within an olive grove, vineyard, grapevines and other fruit trees. Over 350 years old, this farmhouse was originally a grain mill and “cotto” for local wine. A beautiful home with great character and history and where all rooms are peaceful, relaxing and uniquely decorated. Natural building systems mean indoors is both cool in summer and warm in winter – perfect because this area has activities for every season. The land is tended naturally: olives, vines, vegetables and herbs; and wonderful wildlife: butterflies, lizards, boar and birds of prey are everywhere. Spectacular scenery in all directions – hilltop towns: Colmurano, Sarnano, Macerata and the Monti Sibillini – means the view is one of the best in unspoilt Le Marche. It is surely the most romantic place to see the full moon float across the horizon. Welcome!

For more details see:

Other local facilities: Local shops for all the basics are only a few kms away in Colmurano, Paterno or Urbisaglia. Larger supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants in nearby Tolentino offer everything you need as well as “outlet shopping” (also in Civitanova and Ancona). Many superior quality agriturismo restaurants using organic home-grown produce are within a short drive – Villa Bice (Santa Croce), Le Logge (Urbisaglia), Agra Mater (Colmurano) to name a few. Regional food and wine can be explored everywhere, particularly at the sagra festivals which celebrate local cuisine throughout the summer and also during harvest times in the cooler months. Stuffed olives, porchetta, truffles and, of course, mouthwatering seafood, pastas and ice creams of all varieties. Le Marche is famous for Verdicchio, Rosso Cónero and Rosso Piceno wines but there are so many more to discover. Graham's career is wine and he offers wine related holidays, tours, short courses and wine tastings at some of the local vineyards as yet undiscovered beyond the region. A delicious and interesting adventure!

Culture – interesting museums, fabulous theatres and countless churches are found in every village, town and city close to the farmhouse. For example, the Roman archaeological town of Urbs Salvia (Urbisaglia) (with its original amphitheatre still in use today) and fascinating abbey (Abbadia di Fiastra). Also close is Macerata with its famous arena which hosts opera and ballet every summer, the pilgrimage site at Loreto, the amazing caves at Grotte di Frasassi and the beautiful cliffs and coves of the Monte Cónero Riviera. (Recommended cultural reading is the “Blue Guide – The Marche and San Marino” or “The Heritage Guide - The Marches”). Festivals occur almost every day from May until October and most weekends even in autumn and winter. The Artistrada Buskers Festival in Colmurano in mid-July is one of our favourites but there are countless events too numerous to mention here. A selection of our favourites are Carneval in February, Civitanova Marche Wine Festival in April, Gualdo Formaggi d'autore in May, Veregra Street Festival in June, International Children's Theatre Festival in July, San Ginesio Medieval Festival and Ferragosto in August, Artcevia international Art Festival in September, an amazing Halloween festival in Mogliano and the presipi, markets and La Befana festivals over Christmas. Needless to say, during your visit you are bound to find at least one festival to celebrate with the locals in traditional style! Saranne's career is theatre, and theatre weeks are also on offer based around specific performances in the regional theatres. Please ask for further details.

For the sport lover – sports for all seasons are available here as the stunning Sibillini Mountain National Park with its gorgeous lake, hiking and skiing areas are only a short drive away and we can recommend many wonderful walks in this area as well as hundreds of mountain bike trails and horse riding. The nearby beaches and resorts of the Adriatic coast also offer water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing, jet skiing, and naturally swimming and, for children and the whole family, there is also a water park - Verde Azzuro.

WE ALSO OFFER WINE HOLIDAYS (THE ART OF VITICULTURE) AND OLIVE HOLIDAYS (HARVEST AND PRUNING) AS WELL AS OTHER SPECIALIST WEEKS SUCH AS THEATRE, MUSIC, ART AND CULTURE. PLEASE ASK US FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

We are very proud of our natural swimming pool and outside living areas. Ask for more details!!

GETAWAY IN le marche
Very quiet and rustic ancient dwelling with 2 fabulous hosts. Graham treated us to several wine tastings and an olive oil tasting. Learned so much! He also helped me tremendously with house hunting advice. Saranne was wonderful with her direct assessments of the area and provided wonderful resources for eating and shopping. This is as natural setting as you can get with warm inviting hosts. Be prepared for some rough mountainous roads getting certain places and greetings by the local Tigger who is a sweetheart of a cat. Be sure and visit the Abbey and surrounding villages. Easy drive to the coast.

Green , Peace, Friends , Earth .
Saranne and Graham are friends I`ve been planning to visit for some years . How great to find both brimming with enthusiasm for and love of the house and its wonderful setting - as described by others . And burning with a desire to share this with anyone looking for that off-the-beaten-path experience they can offer . Saranne will mainly introduce you to the culture of the area , as well as smoothing your path if your Italian isn`t up to snuff ; Graham will fire you up with his passion for and deep knowledge of all aspects of viticulture , as well as his total commitment to green living and his projects to ensure green principles rule ! (Le Marche is also stunningly green - the colour..) If you have anything about you and you want to get out there and get involved , this is the place , these are the people for you !!

entspannter Sommerurlaub

We (Graham and Saranne) live here with our two daughters who go to school just across the valley in Colmurano. We moved here to take advantage of the beautiful peace and quiet that both this house and the surrounding area offers and to provide our children with a safe, educta and yet also challenging place to grow up. It was our dream and it is now a wonderful reality. That's not to say it isn't hard work - it is a farmhouse after all! We spend most of our free time from our careers tending to the land and the house.(Graham works for the local wineries and Saranne's career is divided between a love of theatre, writing and being a full-time mum.) Our olive trees, veggie patches and vines need constant care and, of course, when the time comes to harvest it is all hands on deck! September is time for grapes, October/November is olive harvest and the veggie patch supplies us with delicious produce all year round which naturally means we are also planting most of the year to ensure a steady flow of food. Then there's making jams and preserves to make use of all the fruits growing on our land - figs, persimmon, pears, apples, elderberries, blackberries, walnuts, almonds, peaches to name just a few of a wide variety!
There are many ways to describe our interests and passions in life – but no specifics quite fit. We share a deep interest in wine, theatre and slowfood and that’s why we live here as they are all in abundance in this area of Le Marche: the wineries of La Murola, Il Pollenza, Saputi and Sant'Isidoro are practically on our doorstep; theatres such as the beautiful Sferisterio Arena and Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata, Nicola Vaccaj in Tolentino, and the amphitheatres in Urbisaglia are a wonder; and gourmet restaurants in Serrapetrona, Colmurano and Belforte are a delicious treat. And then there's the local outdoor activities: hiking, mountain biking, skiing, swimming, sailing etc. It's funny - we love living life on the slow side but there's always so much to do

Why they chose this property

We live in this area of Italy mainly because of its similarities to Graham's home country of Ireland; from the landscape to the outlook of the local people. We love everything that Le Marche and its people represent: the Marchigiani are hard-working yet have a relaxed approach to life, a deep-rooted sense of tradition and a strong community spirit. Above all, they are warm and friendly people who love a story over a glass or two!

The rolling hills of Le Marche are punctuated by beautiful rivers, valleys, dramatic mountain ranges and over 150 km of coastline. Sublimely tranquil, the historical hilltop towns and stunning cities of this area are awe-inspiring. For those, like us, interested in art, history and culture, the churches, museums, galleries, theatres, shrines and roman ruins in this area are plentiful. It is a meticulously preserved treasure trove of times past. In fact, we find that travelling through this region’s countryside is best done off the beaten track. There is so much more to discover by leaving the map behind and getting lost!

When we were looking for a home we were thrilled to find this property because it had everything we wanted: wonderful views, a house with masses of character and history and land which could be tended and developed. Our olive grove was close to being abandoned and over the years we have brought it back to life so we can now enjoy our own olive oil all year round. In fact, so can our customers who come to help with the harvest and leave with a bottle or two in their luggage - both oil and wine! Delicious!

Lastly, although all rooms in the house have the luxury of a balanced temperature whatever the season - we have eco-insulation and underfloor heating - we encourage our guests to spend as much time as possible discovering the region and all it has to offer. We feel truly privileged to be able to live here and even though it can be strenuous running a farmhouse, every day is an inspiration and joy in Le Marche!

What makes this property unique

I fell in love with this farmhouse as soon as I saw it when we first emerged from the windy avenue of trees just above it. Blossom was growing just outside the front door and it all looked so welcoming. Of course, at that time, it was a true 'rustico'. After 10 years of renovation, our home is now fully restored and is warm, welcoming and comfortable. It is made up of three different buildings which have been restored by an amazing team of local builders. On the ground floor of the first house, the original cowshed, woodstore, olive oil and wine rooms have been renovated into a beautiful self-catering apartment which has everything you need for a revitalizing holiday: ensuite double or twin bedroom, kitchen, dining and living space as well as private terraces with beautiful views. On the 1st and 2nd floors there are three separate bedrooms with an additional bathroom. Each has its own character – one with stunning mountain views, another was originally the kitchen with an open fire and intriguing cubbyhole, and the attic room, originally used for storage, is now wonderfully cosy and romantic.
However, most importantly for us, is the fact that the previous owner, whose family lived in this house for over 300years and who still tends his land on the opposite side of the road, is happy to see the house modernised and cared for, and his approval means more to us than anything else.
We have continued his family traditions by growing our own food, making olive oil, planted a vineyard and we care for the land with his guidance, afterall, we are also guests here.

Finally, we are very proud of our natural swimming pool which sits on the top of a hill with stunning views all round. Swim with the dragonflies and lilies! A wonderfully peaceful way to commune with nature.
