Romantic and Private Cottage! (This One is Different!)

When we first walked into this unique cottage, we immediately fell in love with it and we know you will too! Not your run-of-the mill rental house, this cottage wraps its arms around you from the minute you pull in the driveway. It has been owner-occupied for years, and the care taken by the owner is apparent from the outside landscaping to the tastefully appointed furnishings inside.
The cottage is located in Surfside Shores subdivision, 14 miles out Ft. Morgan peninsula. It sits on quiet street on a heavily-wooded lot on top of a dune one block off of the beach, with empty wooded lots on three sides, affording an unusual degree of privacy. Less than 500 feet to the beach (private wooded path through a beautiful beach dune), there is a partial Gulf view from the back deck and screened in porch and a better view from the upper deck. The upper deck (crow's nest) is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee or view a spectacular sunset. A secluded outside shower provides a perfect way to cool off after a stroll back from the beach.
And wait until you see the inside! Tiled floors throughout, unique furniture and decorations, open floor plan, pleasing color schemes, the style is reminiscent of an old island plantation home. None of the typical condominium-style beach decor in this charmer. There is a master bedroom with a very comfortable queen bed and private bath, a second bedroom with two double beds, and a downstairs private bedroom/bath suite (separate entrance). The second upstairs full bath is directly off the living room. A full laundry room is attached to the covered parking area downstairs. The fully-equipped kitchen adjoins the living area for great entertaining.
If you are looking for a something different in a private setting, look no further. We know that you will find this cottage as special as we do!

This is our families favorite vacation place. You feel like you are living on your own private island. The lot is secluded and the walk to the beach is short and beautiful. From sitting on the back porch to taking it easy atop the crows nest the atmosphere is excellent and quiet. The house is nice and well maintained and feels like a home away from home. While we are there escaping from reality my kids skim board and swim, my wife sunbathes and I fish off the beach. If you are looking for a private and relaxing get away from the fast pace world and some good alone or family time this is it. Owner response: Always glad to have you guys down, appreciate the kind words. Was also glad to hear that you were successful in catching speckled trout and redfish right off the beach in front of the house- I may leave the boat docked next time I go down!

We loved Driftwood Cottage. Our first visit and we hope many will follow. House was as described and pictured. It was so comfortable and homey and very clean. Our pups loved the neighborhood, the screened porch and the beach. We look forward to possibly another visit later in the year.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This is our second time at Driftwood Cottage. It's not just a house it's a HOME! We love the privacy and the neighborhood. Since I'm a sun lover (probably not good) I enjoy sitting in the crow's nest. Janet is just a gem to work with. Thanks Mike and Janet for sharing your home with us. We'll be back!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our first time staying at Driftwood Cottage and we enjoyed every minute of it! Place is as described, found everything we needed, and loved the ease of "checking in". Beach was just a short walk away and was not crowded at all, considering it was Spring Break! The biggest plus for us was that the Fort Morgan beaches are dog friendly and we were able to bring our "fur baby" Lucy with us this trip. Love this place and look forward to coming back again!! Thanks so much!!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our stay at Driftwood Cottage was for the cold and wet month of February 2013 (temperatures in the low 60's and over 15" of rain)... and we had a great time! Driftwood cottage is private, but not isolated; well appointed, but not fussy; well equipped, but not complicated. And then there are the unexpected blessings. We were level with the tree tops on the screened porch, above the tree tops in the crow's nest, and had our own private path to the ocean, complete with a board walk and "an enchanted forest". It doesn't get any better than that! In our opinion, Driftwood Cottage is more than just a great place to stay; it's a special place to experience. We loved it here, and Lord willing, hope to return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children.

My family stayed in this home Summer of 2011 and returned for a long weekend between Christmas and New Year this time. A wonderful experience again. The kids were able to run around on the beach and we made fires in the fireplace at night. A couple of evenings we sat as a family on the Crow's Nest and watched the sunset. I would, again, highly recommend Driftwood Cottage for anyone looking for a nice, quiet and wonderful beach getaway.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Jonathan! We are always happy to have you stay, and we are glad Driftwood Cottage is part of your family vacation memories!

Loved the cottage and location. The railing going up to the crows nest was loose, so little nervous on going up. The yard and gardens could use a little loving care. But all in all a very nice vacation home. Loved the screen porch and the sunsets. Neat and organized. Kitchen stove starting to look worn. Property discription very accurate. Would stay again , the price is a good deal. Golf and beaches are fantastic.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Glad you enjoyed the stay, and thanks for the heads up on the loose railing, will get that fixed right away! Regarding the yard, the idea is to keep it close to the natural dune environment with some minimal "manicuring" to knock off the rough edges, consistent with most of the neighborhood. Come back and see us!

My family of 6 spent this past week at the cottage and had the most wonderful time. The house was beautiful and just as described. Everything we could have needed was there from beach toys to board games. The beach was a short walk a way and I lost count of how many times we just went back and forth. The house is spread out enough that you can "expand" as to not walk all over each other and give you time away. We had such a wonderful time, I'm still wishing we were there. We rented a condo last summer and after this experience it will be a house every year! Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We just returned from a week-long stay at the Driftwood Cottage and it is exactly as described and more. The location of the cottage was perfect and we loved the setting and privacy it provided. It was the perfect place to take our children (ages 4 and 1) for their first beach vacation because of the short walk to the beach and the low crowd that was there daily--many days we were the only people at the beach for yards in either direction! The owners, Mike and Janet, are very nice and easy to deal with, provided great information about things to do in the area, and they even called during our stay to make sure everything was okay. We definitely plan to return to the Driftwood Cottage sometime in the future and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to vacation in this area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: Jan and I live on a mountain ridge just north of Birmingham, AL, but have been avid beach goers for many years. We have two kids in college, and one in high school, and we all enjoy our beach time! We purchased the house for our family use, and decorated it to our tastes, and happy to be able to share it with others. We have been surprised at the level of care our guests show when visiting- it seems they love the place as much as we do!
Why the Owner Chose Homes, Single Family:
Having attended college in nearby Mobile, AL we spent many weekends at the beach in the Gulf Shores area subathing, fishing and surfing. We always knew we would own our own place there one day, but did not think it would happen so soon. The location, layout, yard, proximity to the beach, and privacy are just what we wanted, so we made the leap!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The thing we enjoy the most at our cottage is the privacy. The house sits among live oaks with lots of natural dune vegetation surrounding it, and the path over the dune to the beach makes you feel like you are on an island somewhere. We also enjoy the screened porch, the private beach 5 minutes away (no condos!), the quiet neighborhood, and the unique furnishings inside. It really is different than many of the rental homes you see down there.
