Ala Muku - Hawaiian for "rainbow fragment" - is a slice of paradise which offers you and your family and friends a relaxed, comfortable home base to enjoy and explore the beauty, activities, and natural wonders of Kauai. Located at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood, this home is about a half mile to Poipu Beach Park and Brennecke Beach.
Surrounded by lush tropical foliage, Ala Muku is a beautifully appointed, 2500 square foot home with festive island décor to enhance your stay in paradise. Relax and socialize in the many indoor and outdoor spaces. On the western front porch the palm fronds rustle in the gentle breeze of the Pacific trade winds. The plush sofas in the living room invite a nap or an opportunity to be entertained with music, cable TV, or DVD/VHS.
All your culinary needs can be met in the cook’s kitchen with its abundant counter space, up-to-date appliances and utensils. The dining room with atrium-like ambiance seats 10 people with additional dining for 4 in the kitchen nook. The back patio, shaded by the red-blooming Royal Poinciana with orchids blooming at its base, is a lovely spot for lounging and barbecuing. The garden setting is private, peaceful and exotic.
This Kauai home offers: A perfect setup for 2-4 couples vacationing together, a family reunion, or accommodations for wedding guests (sleeps up to 12).
Mala Pua- the "garden" master suite is on the main level with a king bed and daybed, TV and DVD player. The spacious bathroom with a walk-in tiled shower offers lush garden views.
Kumulani- (base of sky) is the vaulted upstairs master suite that captures majestic mountain views and balcony sunsets. It features a king bed, TV and DVD player, bath with tiled shower, and plenty of room for relaxing. There is a daybed and three fold-out futons for optional sleeping space.
The Hula Room features a double bed with a whimsical hula décor theme.
The Blue Room is equipped with two twin beds that can be converted into a king-size bed to meet your needs. Please let us know how you want it set up before arrival.
Turn on your laptop anywhere on the property and enjoy high-speed wireless internet access. Our cable TV service offers 175 channels including 11 commercial-free movie channels.
The garage is equipped with laundry facilities, two bicycles and helmets, and beach gear. (This saves you $$ on recreational equipment fees.)
Pack up the beach equipment including mats, chairs, umbrella, cooler, sand toys, and have a great day at the beach. Poipu Beach Park offers a large grassy area dotted with swaying coco palms. There are picnic tables, play equipment, showers, restrooms, even a convenience store and restaurant across the street.
Poipu Beach offers a sheltered cove called "Baby Beach" where toddlers play in the sand and splash in the shallow waters. A few steps away in the clear warm water, colorful tropical fish swim beneath as you snorkel just feet from the shore. The calm waters and gentle waves are enjoyed by swimmers of all capabilities. Experienced surfers can catch large-breaking waves further out beyond the reef. Brennecke Beach, at the east end of the park, is renowned for body surfing and boogie boarding.
If you bring your camera you may be able to capture on film a Monk Seal sleeping off a meal on the beach. Seals are protected so don't approach too closely.
Within a two mile radius of the house you will find two golf courses, some of Kauai’s finest restaurants and charming island boutiques. When you venture beyond Poipu you will find a virtual paradise of activities: helicopter tours, horseback riding, river and ocean kayaking, whale-watching, botanical garden tours and much more, including many popular natural attractions such as the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific).

We stayed here with 8 adults and 1 infant. Jim and Juliana prepared everything before our arrival and it was perfect! Large kitchen and dining room easily accomodated our group, and the location was close enough to the beach for easy access, but not so close we were overrun by tourists. It felt like an authentic Kuaui experience! Amenities were exactly as described and super helpful! If we ever go back to Hawaii, we'll be sure to stay here again!Did you find this review helpful? Kauai is our favorite island and we've wanted to share this beauty with our family. Our son and his wife had been to Oahu several years ago, but our daughter and family had never been to Hawaii so this was going to be a treat for all of us. We planned this get-away for our entire family for over a year, and when I found Ala Muku I knew this sounded like the perfect place. When my husband and I walked into the home on Nov 16 we were overwhelmed! It really WAS the perfect place! The house is spacious and well laid out so that each couple had privacy, but we could all be together when we wanted. The living room is very roomy with plenty of couch space for six adults and 2 cuddled-up grandchildren (age 5 and 11) to visit, play a game or watch TV. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of pots, pans, dishes and silverware for a big group, and large enough for several of us to work together to prepare a meal. Our daughter made pancakes for our granddaughter's 11th birthday breakfast, and we all had dinner together nearly every evening around the large dining table. Thanksgiving was an occasion to remember! No turkey this year, but we enjoyed the Costco rotisserie chicken just as well. And with purple sweet potatoes, tropical fruit salad, fresh pineapple upside-down cake, and Costco pumpkin pie - what more could we ask? How about boogie boarding at Poipu Beach! Jim and Juliana had a large supply of beach toys and beach towels for our use and the kids were delighted to help load up the car each morning as we set out for another adventure. At age 5, Tom wasn't too interested in snorkeling but he loved playing in the sand and running, splashing and bobbing around in the water. Lydia turned out to be a natural at both snorkeling and boogie boarding. She had the best birthday any 11-year-old ever had! Her smile never left her face the entire week! Poipu Beach is only a short drive away and is a great beach for all ages! Lydgate Beach Park up towards Kapaa is also a wonderful family beach and can usually be snorkeled even if the weather gets bad. The kids loved the Kamalani Playground across the road from Lydgate. Anini Beach up near Kilauea is another good beach for kids; Lydia found lots of turtles while snorkeling there! Don't miss the Puka Dogs at Poipu Shopping Center, and the best burger is at a little stand on the highway by Anahola called Duane's Ono Char Burgers. Oh boy are they Good! Ala Muku was a delight! I know you'll love it too!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Travelled from Australia with friends and had great week at this property. The listed description was very accurate, the property well maintained and the owners provided great customer service as well as home grown bananas! All beach equipment was provided and was well used by us for snorkelling at Poipu beach. This property is well situated for exploring the island and as it is away from the usual tourist places is excellent for a restful and relaxing holiday. Definitely recommend this property.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My wife and I, along with two other couples had a wonderful stay at this residence. The description, location and amenities were all as described and met our every need. The residence was furnished nicely, sports equipment was available for our use, and the residence was well maintained, exceeding our needs. The owners went out of their way to make us feel at home and provided excellent customer service prior to our stay and while at the residence. We would highly recommend this home to any of our friends and family and those wanting a place to stay while on Kauai. The KuKui'ula shopping center was five minutes away from the residence with numerous shops and restaurants. Poipu Beach was also within a short bike ride of the residence. A great place for breakfast on a patio is Joe's on the Green, again about five minutes from the residence which is next to the Poipu golf course. Again, if you're looking for a nice house to share with family or friends, close to everything you need while on Kauai and approximately 30 minutes from the airport, we highly recommend this vacation home.Did you find this review helpful? We really enjoyed our stay at the Ala Muku Home in Poipu, Kauai. We were traveling with our teenage kids and another couple so we needed a place that we could all spread out. This place was fabulous and provided just what we were looking for! The layout was great; we had our bedrooms on one floor and the second master bedroom was upstairs at the other end of the house with plenty of privacy for the other couple. There was ample space when we were all together and all the rooms were very comfortable & spacious. The house is in a quiet neighborhood that is about a 2-minute drive or 10-15 minute walk to Poipu Beach. The kitchen was stocked with everything you might need to cook your meals and the grocery store was just a short drive away. They had bikes for use and about 10 different sets of snorkels, which saved additional money. We were able to find a set that fit everyone. They had plenty of extra towels for the beach, along with umbrellas, floaties and a cooler. Everything is there that you would need for a day at the beach. And the laundry area in the garage was great for drying out wet items and washing as needed. It was lovely to come back from our adventures each day to unwind and relax in this comfortable home away from home. Juliana & Jim were very helpful and easy to work with on the rental. We had a wonderful trip and would highly recommend this house for large families or groups vacationing on Kauai!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We honeymooned on Kauai 35 yrs ago and returned with our three kids and cousins for a fun memorable stay. We enjoyed our stay here tremendously. Everything was as advertised. More than enough space for the 8 of us. We walked, biked and drove to the beach easily. We hit costco when we arrived for big grocery shopping. The house was clean and airy. We usually had breakfast there and cooked half of our dinners. Kitchen was large and well equiped. The customer service the owners provided was wonderful. We had to fax some legal documents and the owners kindly went out of their way to help us with this. They also gave us some good advise on things to see and do. One of the highlights was a catamaran cruise up the na poli coast. Whales, porpoises, amazing coast line, secluded beaches. We highly recommend this house and experience.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

This home was the perfect location! We were a quick walk and extremely quick drive to the beach. The home was well equipped with everything one would need for a trip to the beach and lots of bikes. Laundry room made it easy to stay clean, though had restricted hours that were difficult for us. Comfortable beds and plenty of space. We spent a lot of time at Poipu Beach and were a drive away from anywhere on the island. Wonderful home!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: Juliana and Jim own 2 homes in Kauai and manage a number of other beautiful homes and condos. They began visiting the Garden Island in 1997 and now are permanent residents. Juliana is a licensed real estate broker in Hawaii. Her special enjoyment is gardening. She loves to share the many wonderful features of Kauai with her visitors, especially the great beauty of the local botanical gardens. Jim is a builder of many years and now enjoys semi-retirement while keeping his hands busy with the occasional remodel.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
Kauai is truly the "garden island", with its many beautiful water features and planned construction which virtually eliminates high rises. The warm sandy beaches and friendly local residents always make you feel comfortable away from home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Poipu area is on the warm sunny south side of Kauai. It is definitely a great destination with its many sandy beaches, boutiques, and wonderful restaurants. It is just a short drive to the airport, as well as the west, east and north sides of the island.
