BEST WEEKEND GETAWAY EVER

Guest: RF (United States)
Date of Stay: 03/09/12 Review Submitted: 04/02/12

My girlfriend and I live in SF, but needed a retreat in wine country to recharge our batteries. We spotted the lovely Acorn House and gave Jerry and Bev a call. Bev called back promptly and could not have been lovelier. I’ve stayed in plenty of B&B’s and the like but have never felt so instantly comfortable with a property owner. While en route, Jerry called to invite us to share a glass of wine with he and Bev in their detached refrigerated wine room. We picked up the pace and arrived in Kenwood shortly. Acorn House sits down a quiet, bucolic lane located along a row of vineyards. We already felt wonderfully secluded in the hills of Sonoma, but the setback from the main road made us feel like we were a thousand miles from the distractions and stresses of our daily lives. As promised, Jerry and Bev met us with appetizers and a bottle of wine. We took a quick tour around the property: The cottage is new construction with modern amenities. The cottage is spacious with gorgeous, large windows that frame both the 500 year old oak tree and the vines that yield Jerry and Bev’s petit verdot. Bev left us a homemade loaf of banana bread on the counter, along with a bottle of wine and 2 glasses for us to keep. The 4 acres are sprawling. Although the main house is 30 yards away, we felt like we were in a private retreat. The outdoor hot-tub is within arm’s reach of vineyards, under the starry Sonoma sky, and entirely reserved for Acorn House guests during their stay. We only left our fantastic conversation with Jerry and Bev to find dinner, and we were sad that we had to cut the chat short. We would’ve much preferred to stay in the wine room with another bottle. Jerry and Bev invited us to a barrel tasting of their petit verdot the next day, which we took them up on (it’s fantastic, btw). Although we are Sonoma regulars, they provided excellent tips on some smaller wineries and restaurants. The cottage is a very short drive to Santa Rosa and Sonoma, with easy access to fantastic wineries. We had such a great time with Jerry and Bev that we joined them the following night, along with some of their family, for another bottle or two around the outdoor fire pit. I hesitated in writing this review because part of me wants to keep Acorn House as a personal secret, but we adored Jerry, Bev, and the Acorn House too much to keep it to ourselves. We are seriously going to make this at least an annual getaway. Can't recommend highly enough.

Absolutely Charming!

I can't say enough good things about Acorn House and owners Bev & Jerry. They provided everything we needed and more for a wonderful stay, from the fresh homemade banana bread, to the robes, and the full music collection....They were extremely gracious and hosted us in their wine cellar and even provided marshmallows and roasting sticks for my 8 year old daughter to use at the firepit :) Even in December, this property is surrounded by stunning beauty - the grounds are gorgeous and the giant oak was magnificent to see through the perfect frame of the cottage's large windows. The hot tub is fantastic and has great views of the stars at night. We only wish we could have stayed longer!

Honeymooners from the UK - Trip to remember

Guest: donnaswann (London, UK)
Date of Stay: 07/28/11 Review Submitted: 11/14/11

Acorn House brings back some the most memorable moments from our honeymoon this summer. We rented Acorn House for 4 nights and had the most peaceful, relaxing, romantic time!! We spent our days sightseeing between vineyards in the local towns (Sonoma, Napa, Yountville, Kenwood, Glen Ellen), a trip to the coast to witness the most amazing sea and skyline, dinner out in the local restaurants and time in to hot tub and pool! Having spent a year planning our wedding our stay at Acorn House was exactly what we had dreamed of and more. Our hosts, Bev and Jerry, had everything planned and ready for us down to the very small details that made is so special. A bottle local wine and glasses for us to keep, the amazing homemade banana bread and the flipflops and bathrobes for the hot tube. Having returned to the UK we still recall very fond memories of Acorn House and day dream about our return!! We would both highly reccommend Acorn House, its what memories where made for :-)

I work for Apple computers and we had a meeting in San Francisco last weekend. I was looking for a different place to stay for a few days( NO HOTELS!!) and I came across Acorn House. What a great little cottage that is and perfect for touring Sonoma or Napa. Your located right around some great wineries and eateries. Bev and Jerry are great host and you must enjoy some wine with them in their wine cellar. Great place, great weekend and I will be back!!

Ditto to all of the other reviews. We had a perfect 4 days at Acorn House. The owners are wonderful and have thought of everything -- flip flops and robes for the hot tub, travel mugs for your coffee, insulated bag for picnicking, and a library of books, CDs, and DVDs. The breakfast items and staples provided in the kitchen were perfect. The property is so comfortable, quiet and relaxing. We found ourselves wanting to return earlier in the evening just to spend some extra time in the house & hot tub. We can't wait to go back!

The Perfect Getaway

Guest: Jean (Maryland)
Date of Stay: 03/28/11 Review Submitted: 04/09/11

My husband and I spent 3 nights in this super-clean and well-appointed house. Our hosts, Bev and Jerry, have thought of every detail to make us feel comfortable and cared for. The location is SO close to wineries and restaurants, but when you pass through the gate to this lovely property you feel totally secluded. Kitchen is well-stocked; provisions included homemade banana bread, Eng. muffins, fresh fruit, cereal, coffee, juice, milk, etc., even a bottle of wine! Enjoyed the hot tub, the fire "pit", and the privacy. It is also handicapped-friendly for those who need it. Bev and Jerry make you feel like old friends. We would definitely stay here again!

We had such a wonderful stay at the Acorn House. Bev and Jerry go out of their way to make you feel like part of the family, but still providing lots of privacy. Bev and Jerry guided us through town with their knowledge of the area and had some wonderful dinners and wine tours at the local wineries. We would recommend the Acorn House whenever you are visiting Northern California, it is very close to the Russian River Valley and only 1 1/2 hours from San Francisco or Oakland. You will not be dissapointed!

Acorn House is a magical place - The PERFECT RETREAT!!

Guest: Carlee (San Diego, CA)
Date of Stay: 10/01/10 Review Submitted: 11/08/10

My husband and I spent the most perfect weekend at the Acorn House. 2 days was not nearly enough time to enjoy this spectacular getaway. The grounds are stunning, and have everything you could possibly need...a hot tub, adorable patio, vineyards, wine room, and the biggest, most beautiful 500 year old Oak Tree you will ever see watching over everything. The house itself is better then any hotel, completely stocked with cds, lots of great books, bathtub with jets, full kitchen, tons of wine country info, and they even fill the kitchen with breakfast foods, coffee, wine, etc. And on top of all of that, the owners Bev and Jerry are the most friendly and gracious hosts. Upon arrival they invited us into their wine cellar for some delicious appetizers and wine from the region. They are such a pleasure!!! Their house is close by, but the Acorn house is so private, you'll barely notice their presence. I can not say enough about this perfect hidden jewel. This is the real wine country experience.

No detail too small!

Guest: Kath (Hamden, CT)
Date of Stay: 07/18/10 Review Submitted: 08/04/10

We have never been any place where so much attention was paid to the details, large and small, that make a stay interesting, comfortable and memorable. Bev was on her own while her husband was fishing, but she did her utmost to make us feel welcome while not being in the least bit intrusive. She was a wealth of information about the area - wine tastings, day trips, etc. - and a most gracious hostess who opened up her wine collection to share some favored labels and friendly conversation. The cottage was filled with books and music and movies and had a computer with wifi, a TV with DVD and a CD player. Outside we had deer and foxes and a quail family on one hand and on the other large bushes of blackberries and blueberries to munch on and row upon row of grapevines to wander in. Our 16 year old slept in the loft. While too low to stand in, it provided a welcome sanctuary where he could log on, tune in or simply relax. We have already recommended this place to family and friends and would enthusiastically do so to readers of these reviews.

We were lucky enought to call Acorn House our home base for the annual Savor Sonoma Barrel tasting. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We couldnt get over the attention to detail in this lovely cottage. Bev and Jerry have literally thought of everything. If you are so inclined and wish to cook in, there are fresh herbs such as thyme and parsley in beautiful pots growing right outside the door. They have spent a lot of time on the grounds which was apparent even in the springtime! We loved the huge ancient oak tree that stands over this place. Best of all was the hospitality of Bev and Jerry...truly great people who we hope to spend time with again.

The Acorn House was the perfect start to our marriage. We were married the day before in Canada and arrived at the House late in the evening; it was all lit up to welcome us to Sonoma, and was a warm and beautiful start to our honeymoon. The House was spotless and had every amenity we could have wanted. The next morning we looked out the windows and saw for the first time the amazing views of the nearby state parks, the incredible gardens, the host’s own vineyards, and an incredible oak tree, which stands as a monument to the beauty of this property (and it is likely the oldest in the county!) We still often recall and reminisce about how spectacular the region is, how beautiful the House and the surrounding gardens are, and how kind and inviting the hosts were. Beverly and Jerry will ensure that you are well cared for, comfortable, and have a good understanding of everything that the region has to offer! We give the Acorn House a perfect score, and we look forward to visiting again!

We just returned from a quick 3 night stay at Acorn House, and feel very fortunate to have found such a perfect place to stay, and such wonderful hosts with Bev and Jerry. The spacious guest cottage is located in a very private oasis of beautiful gardens, grape vines, and trees - including a massive 500 year old Valley Oak that's perfectly framed when looking out the large picture window in the living room. The Acorn House experience goes way beyond the immaculate but comfortable amenities described by previous guests, and really has more to do about Bev & Jerry's sincere commitment to providing a perfect vacation experience to their clients. All of their insider tips and advice as to which wineries, restaurants and sightseeing attractions to visit were 100% spot-on, which allowed us to maximize our enjoyment over a short visit. The location in Kenwood is ideal and allows for easy access to several outstanding wineries, as well as some fantastic scenic country road trips. Also, their personal experience as grape growers and their insider knowledge of the best wine values were extremely helpful and educational. Most impressive of all was their sincere hospitality, whereby we were invited into their private cellar and home to become better acquainted as friends. Our only criticism to them was that we felt that their web site coud not possibly convey how perfect a destination that Acorn House provides to its guests. Their modesty, and understated, humble approach to customer satisfaction is just their nature. Stay here and you will definitely get more than you expect and leave totally fulfilled beyond expectations - I think that's how they intend it to be. Jack & Pam

Our stay at Acorn House exceeded all of our expectations. The cottage is beautifully decorated and meticulously kept, a wonderful mix of homey-ness and elegance. We were there having a honeymoon in California, and we could not have asked for a more romantic, relaxing getaway. We highly recommend it to other honeymooners. The larger property, with its Japanese garden, tall trees, and picturesque wine cellar, would be an equally wonderful place for a wedding, we thought. (I don't know if Jerry and Bev would consider such a thing, but if we had another wedding to celebrate, we might very well ask them!) As for Jerry and Bev themselves, they are absolutely the kindest and most hospital hosts you could imagine. All in all, with its mixture of privacy and the most hospitable hosts you can imagine not far away, Acorn House is, to our minds, the perfect vacation spot. We only wish we could have stayed longer. We feel blessed to have discovered it!

The Acorn House. What a lovely place this is to stay. Our Hosts, Beverly and Jerry were the kindest people, ever, and they took such good care of us. We stayed in town for a wedding, and I'd never rented a home before, but what a great experience! To welcome us, there were slippers waiting for us in the bathroom,to keep! In the kitchen, breakfast items and a bottle of wine there for our enjoyment, as well as a stocked fridge for our convenience. That bathroom was stocked with soaps, towels, robes, etc. My husband and I slept in the bed, and our adult daughter slept in the loft and was quite comfortable. There's room for three up there! The cottage, or small house was very comfortable, clean and so well decorated throughout in the theme of acorns and squirrels. It was quite nice. The house had all the amenities that one could ever want, including wireless connectivity. Beverly and Jerry, our Hosts, were just such a pleasure to talk to and they are so kind and thoughtful. Truly, there was nothing that we could have asked for, as everything was already there for us. This house is very safe, and has a gate around to keep the deer out of the beautiful gardens. It's quite the place to say, nice, safe, clean and quiet. We'll be back, as well as some of our friends and family members are anxious to experience the Acorn House for themselves. You can't beat the price, and you certainly can't match the hospitality. It's a good thing. Come and stay awhile. You'll be glad you did!

When we were planning our trip to the wine country, we saw all the positive comments about Acorn House and decided right then that we had found our place. We didn't even plan where we would go because we knew that Bev and Jerry would help guide us, and they certainly did. We had a full agenda of wineries, sights, state parks, markets, etc. recommended by our hosts. All were great! The accomodations were sweet! Beautiful grounds and a cozy cottage--robes and flip flops (the latter are yours to keep) laid out for us in the lovely bathroom; an impressive array of breakfast foods, fruits, and beverages in the refridge; immaculate hardwood floors; wonderful closet space---all designed for your comfort. Bev and Jerry are really great people--personable and generous. You are treated upon arrival to a wonderful wine tasting in their tasting room with an array of appetizers and wonderful wines. At that time they will ask what you would like to do and give you any advice you may seek. They are down to earth and friends to all. Finally, the location of Acorn House is great. You are right in the midst of numerous Kenwood and Glen Ellen wineries which can take a full day of touring. You can reach the Russian River Valley in an hour for another day (and the coast as well). And the Napa Valley is also a half hour or less away. Stop in Sonoma on your way at the Visitors Building and get a map of all the areas and their wineries. Bev also has maps. Enjoy!

Acorn House is the perfect place to stay in Wine Country. We stayed for 4 days in Sept and from the moment we drove through the gates to the unfortunate moment we had to leave for home we were in Paradise. Acorn House is absolutely beautiful, the grounds, the Arbor, The Relaxation Garden, The vineyard and The Hot Tub under the stars on a clear night, the deck and the landscaping enhance the experience of Acorn House. Everything you could possibly want has been thought of and provided for you by your hosts Bev and Jerry. The Cottage has an enourmous Palladian Window that encompasses the garden side of the yard . Look through this window and you will see an Oak tree that is over 500 years old, and this view has been perfectly executed with your enjoyment in mind. There is a wonderful gas fireplace for those cool mornings, curl up on the couch and enjoy Gourmet coffee and home baked breads that Bev has made. Your day will start off perfectly. The bedroom is comfortable and private, the closet space was amazing. Acorn House has perfect proximity for exploring all over Napa and Sonoma County and is even an easy ride to the Pacific Coast Highway. We went to Jenner, walked out on Goat Rocks Beach and saw the all the seals basking in the glorious California sun. It was an easy drive back to the Cottage. Bev and Jerry will not only provide you with an incredible array of cheeses , wines and fruits on an elegantly arranged tray, they will answer all your questions and provide you with the best advice on where to go, what markets to shop at , wineries and where to eat and believe us, they were right on every time. They are wonderful hosts and a pleasure to get to know and spend time with. We had a fabulous time exploring and enjoying all that Sonoma and Napa Counties have to offer and coming home to Acorn House completed the perfect day. Walking the vineyard at sunset was wonderful especially if Jerry was there to tell you about the grapes and all that entails to grow them. We not only had fun but we also learned about what it takes to grow grapes, the varieties, the history of winemaking. This also enhanced our trip. We recommend Acorn House to anyone who wants to have a fantastic, exciting, relaxing, educational and wonderful time. We plan to return again and again for many years to come Mary and Ray Beverly Mass

Acorn House is a wonderful place for a getaway. Convenient to many wonderful wineries, convenient to many great restaurants. The best hosts one could hope for. We have been to wine country several times before. Acorn House is by far our favorite place to stay. Bev and Jerry made our stay wonderful and as an added bonus they will provide you with as much info as you want regarding wineries to visit, restaurants to dine at and pretty much any other info you could need. If you choose not to go to Acorn house that is good for us, as it will be easier to get a reservation the next time we go.

My mother and I stayed here in 2007 and were overly pleased with the accommodations! The house was cozy and well kept; ample space for the two of us and still would have been plenty of room even with the two additional guests that were originally going to be a part of our stay. The house was filled with local reading, the fridge offered a few delicious surprises, and the windows to the outside created perfectly framed vistas! The hosts provided the most welcoming experience we have ever had, and treated us so kindly. They even provided us with a private wine tasting! And though we were sharing part of their property, they certainly left us our space. Convenient location to wineries, and not far from towns or attractions. This is a most beautiful part of the country for those who've never been, and Acorn House is a great way to see it! I recommend 100%!

You simply won't meet nicer people than Bev and Jerry. We thought we just needed a nice place to relax, but they made it so much more. The property is beautiful and the wine and hot tub would have made for a romantic stay--if we hadn't had our baby with us. :) But we were all able to enjoy playing on the porch and cooking dinner. It was so relaxing it made it hard to leave for the wineries, but we still managed a few. Can't wait to go back.

To say that the Acorn House was the perfect "home base" for our Wine Country Honeymoon would be a huge understatement. It was everything we could have hoped for in a Honeymoon cottage and more. Privacy is not a concern, it is wonderfully secluded and also has a private hot tub which is very romantic at night. The house is perfectly located between Napa & Sonoma to provide ample opportunity to go wine tasting in both regions. Jerry & Bev are the perfect hosts, providing a bottle of wine and homemade Banana Bread upon arrival and inviting us into their lovely wine room on our last night to share a bottle of wine with them. As soon as we left the house, we wished we were going back. Anytime we are in Sonoma or the near area, we will definitely stay at Jerry & Bev's Acorn House.

We have stayed there 2 or 3 times now and each stay is better than the last one. Bev & Jerry are awesome and we consider them friends. It is our home away from home as we are very comfortable there. We just returned from a great weekend at the Acorn house. The house is stunning and includes many extras that you don't usually get in a VRBO house - a bottle of wine, home-made banana bread and everything you need for breakfast. The view of the oak tree from the living room was spectacular, I spent several happy hours reading and enjoing its majestic company. Perfectly constructed for a couple with all the amenities you can ask for. Beverly is a perfect host and gave us a tour (and some samples!) of her stunning garden. We will definitely return!

It’s twenty degrees; the wind is blowing across the Bluegrass of Kentucky, and we’re longing to be back at the Acorn House in picturesque, romantic Sonoma Valley. We returned recently from our second visit to the quaint and immaculate accommodations just as impressed as we were with our first visit. The hospitality was impeccable; the amenities including a complete kitchen, fireplace, hot tub, and complimentary bottle of wine were above reproach. Our courteous and congenial, yet never overbearing, hosts - Bev & Jerry Stemach - proved to be knowledgeable of the region and impressed us with their experience in the wine industry. They graciously answered questions about the vineyards, wineries, local dining, and entertainment as we sipped petit verdot in their charming, private wine room.If you’re looking for the perfect location as a base for your exploration of Sonoma Valley wineries – look no further than the Acorn House! Bev & Jerry – we’ll be back! Maggie & Ted

Bob and I were fortunate enough to stay in the Acorn House in April 2006. The darling cottage was immaculate, and perfectly appointed. We did not want for a thing. It is nestled in a very private setting with a wonderful spa, and private deck. Bev and Jerry were the perfect hosts. They gave great information and directions about the area. Which by the way is beautiful. We hope to go back again next year. Sincerely, Bob and Dorothy

We had the good fortune to spend a week at Acorn house in August, 2006. It was by far our best wine country lodging experience in 3 separate trips to Napa and Sonoma. The cottage was immaculate, the facilities and grounds spacious and inviting, and the amenities more than sufficient. We were treated to a complimentary bottle of wine our first day, along with fresh fruits and muffins daily to help us get on our way. Our host and hostess, Jerry and Bev, could not have been more accommodating. They were not at all intrusive, and were quick to share their knowledge of the Sonoma Valley area. We will DEFINITELY be staying at Acorn House on our next trip to Napa/Sonoma. We look forward to spending more time with the Stemachs on our return.

We stayed in this private, one B/R house for a week in September this year and couldn't have been more pleased with the accomodations. The gracious owners went out of their way to make us feel right at home. It is close to the town of Sonoma (15 minutes by car) and just a few minutes from all the major wineries in Sonoma Valley. It's a perfect location for a long romantic weekend or a week exploring the wineries and hiking in the surrounding hills. Napa Valley is a short drive from the cottage. The spotless private house, detached from the main house, affords maximum privacy with a patio and open deck and all the rooms are large and comfortabe with more than ample storage. The owners greeted us with a complimentary bottle of wine and stocked the refrigerator with everything we'd need for breakfast. The cottage is very quiet and safe. We'd definitely stay here again and encourage anyone visiting the area to check out this terrific property and take advange of a good value.
