The historic historic farmhouse, Casa Padronale, set in large, fully fenced secure grounds in the hills of eastern Tuscany, overlooking the beautiful Lake. The English owners, Robert, an orchestral conductor and Sarah, a potter, have won acclaim for their restorations of listed historical properties in the United Kingdom from the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times, Period House, and Period Property.
Robert and Sarah looked at over 60 properties around Tuscany, before they stumbled upon Calcinaia and it's neighbouring town Anghiari, and knew instantly this was the place where they wanted to restore. The location is truly breathtaking and unspoilt.
Calcinaia has recently been subjected to a no expenses spared restoration, of the most exacting standards, using original and antique materials, that is, every ceiling is beamed and has the original hand-made panelled tiles. Why the Owner Chose Anghiari
Having looked at more than 60 properties over a period of 18 months, we finally found Calcinaia and knew instantly that this was the place for us. Overlooking the beautiful lake Montedoglio, the estate needed a complete restoration (not just cosmetic). New roof, walls, windows, plumbing, central heating, en-suite bathrooms, kitchens, swimming pool etc....It took us 2 years to complete the 800sqm restoration to a very high standard.
The Unique Benefits at this Country House / Chateau
A private location, overlooking the beautiful lake and less that 10 minutes form two medieval towns. Private swimming pool and large fully fenced grounds.
All bedrooms have en-suite modern bathrooms. Wired & Wireless broadband connection for guests own laptop.
Owner's Map of Anghiari
Robert is an orchestral conductor and professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London and Sarah is a internationally renowned potter working on the wheel

Two families (total of 7 people ages 19 - 67) spent a week at Calcinaia in June 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed the property and the region. The property was very comfortable with plenty of space for all. We enjoyed the great lake view as well as swimming in our own pool. We ventured into the closest town of Anghari which was very medieval and quaint several times. Calcinaia was well located for various day trips to Florenze, Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, Siena and others. Would strongly recommend this villa!
Owner response:Thank you so much for your kind review. We loved Calcinaia the first day we saw in in 2003, even though it needed total restoration. Really pleased you all had a lovely time and liked the area. If you ever fancy a return visit, I will be very pleased to offer you a very keen price. Kindest regards.....

We truly enjoyed our vacation to Italy. Calcinaia was the perfect home base for our Tuscan adventure. The beautiful views of the serene hills and lake were breathtaking. Our party of eight found the accomodations outstanding. The pictures and description in the listing were accurate, but the actual experience was better than expected. We will have fond memories of our private dinners with the local chefs Gabriella and Linda. Day trips to Siena, Florence, Assisi and Sansepolcro were all special in their own way. The nearby town of Anghiari was charming and convenient. Trips to the local markets were minutes away. Calcinaia caretakers Ben and Marcello were responsive and friendly, always available to offer advice. The owners, Robert and Sarah were a pleasure to work with and made our trip to Italy a dream come true. We hope some day to return and we will definitely book Calcinaia again.
Owner response:Dear Terrence. Thank you for your lovely review. We fell in love with Calcinaia the first time we saw it in 2003 despite the fact it needed total restoration. Sarah and & are so pleased you had a lovely experience. If you would like to return, please be assured we will offer you a very good price. Very best wishes. Robert & Sarah

Wonderful Tuscan Holiday Experience

We had the most wonderful holiday staying at Calcinaia - it is a truely beautiful place. The house itself is full of Tuscan charm and has been lovingly & thoughtfully restored. The rooms are very spacious with beautiful bathrooms and comfortable beds. Everything has been tastefully decorated and we really loved the staircase and the traditional Tuscan ceilings. The location is stunning with beautiful views over the lake and the surrounding mountains; it was so peaceful and such a great space to share with friends. The swimming pool was lovely and as we were lucky enough to have such amazing weather my daughter really appreciated being able to cool down in it. There was a lovely large table outside that we were all able to sit around and share meals together, we particularly enjoyed picking the sun-warmed fruit from the fig tree to have with our lunch. The evenings were perfect - it was so lovely to be able sit out under the stars. We enjoyed exploring the local sights: particularly wandering the winding streets of the local medieval hill top town of Anghiari, visiting Arezzo and taking the cable car to the top and admiring the great views and spending the most wonderful day in Sienna. This is a beautiful place to visit and relax. We would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a truely authentic italian experience and can't wait to make a return visit. Grazie Mille for a really fantastic holiday.
Owner response:Thank you so much for submitting such a wonderful review of our property. We spent 2 years looking for a unique large estate in Tuscany to restore, and luckily managed to secure Calcinaia in 2005, and spent the following two years restoring it using reclaimed antique materials. We have just completed our 5th year of summer rentals, each year as you know having completely sold out. We are so pleased we had the availability you wanted and have already pencilled in your two week return visit for summer 2013. Calcinaia is our pride and joy and we are always very pleased to receive feedback like this. We look forward to meeting you again in a couple of years, during which time we will continue to maintain Calcinaia to our very high standards.

Let me start off by saying a quick and obvious statement: the Calcinaia is beautiful. If you are reading this I’m sure you already know, but in case you didn’t, now you know. We lucked out with both the weather and finding the Calcinaia, both complimenting each other and creating such beauty. As far as our stay, it was fabulous. A few days we stayed and relaxed at the Calcinaia, lounging by the pool and feasting in the cozy kitchen. All the other days were spent away from this paradise unfortunately, but was still fun. We took day trips to the well known places of Tuscany, Florence, Siena, Anghiari, Montalcino. We all loved Siena and Anghiari the most. Both were quiet and rustic, with little hussle and bussle. If you happen to go to Siena I recommend a tour guide, whether group or private. You learn so much more than you would from wandering the streets. Anghiari is also a must, with such short drive time and amazing scenery you would regret it if you don’t visit. The Calcinaia felt like home to us for a week and the beds were a welcome sight to aching feet. Comfortable and quiet, except for the symphony of nature, the Calcinaia was well loved. And to solve the problem of the path, it is not on the property, but next to. You must go through the gate to the top of that evilly sharp hill. To the left is a gravel path, follow it downwards and always stay on the left path. Eventually the lake comes to view. Overall, a paradise on Earth with soothing ambience and historic places near it, it’s not hard to enjoy such a stay. Enjoy this paradise as we did. P.S If you are in Siena and crave the best gelato we’ve tasted, head to Nanninni. It’s a fabulous geletaria and bakery (pastries). Yum!

We’ve has a wonderful week here at your beautiful property. The weather has been kind to us, the surrounding area is breath taking. We enjoyed lazy days by the pool and wonderful cuisine in the resturants recommended by the ‘house book’ particularly contini de granduca and Di Alighiro tucked away in the winding back streets for Anghiari. We’ll take fond memories to go with the many pictures we took of the area and hope to return someday…..

Calcinaia was a great decision for our holiday. Away from the crowds of central Tuscany, we loved the quietness of the property and the beauty of the area. Anghiari was sensational, and Da Alighiero in the old town provided out best restaurant experience in Italy and France. The home is gorgeous and the pool was a treat. Ah, one last piece of advice; book chef Barbara to come to Calcinaia to make you dinner featuring the food and wine from her farm. For an amazing, magical evening we paid about half of what we expected to pay ! Giao e grazie
