Pure Bliss at the Bay Front Bungalow

Guest: Napa Diamond (Napa CA)
Date of Stay: 04/26/12 Review Submitted: 05/02/12

Very comfortable bed! Bungalow is well stocked (there are at least a dozen wine glasses, and we had no issues with neighbors or their dog(s). The cove is alive with fish and honu (turtles) we saw them in the cove everyday! Wish we had more than 4 days here. As this is a tropical area, the salt water and weather take their toll, but the Bungalow is very clean and the grounds well maintained. Happy, Happy, Happy Stay at the Bay.

Fabulous sunny Kapoho, we couldn't have asked for more:)

We had a fabulous stay at this wonderful bungalow, so much so that we are seriously going to return. It was perfect for our children who are 5 and 3 even though the water was right there. They had space to run around and explore and had a calm and exciting area to swim in. It was quiet and sunny and just fabulous. So much to see and do on this side of the island and so relaxing. Thank you so much for a great experience, we loved it:)

Bay Front Bungalow - Paradise

Guest: Kona Honu (Redwood City, CA)
Date of Stay: 01/16/12 Review Submitted: 02/04/12

This place was so much more than I expected. A small and comfortable house on a large lot and you walk into your own tide pool to snorkel. Plenty of lounging space on the lanai and around the property. Sitting in the evening on the lawn down by the water was wonderful. Quiet, no traffic, no hustle or bustle, the real Hawaii experience you may be looking for. We were confirmed Kona visitors, but the Puna District has captured our hearts. It would have been nice if kayaks were available at the property. I would have given the place a five star rating but it needs a good cleaning. If you want to get away from it all at a great price this is the place. We can't wait to return to this charming bungalow.

Owner response:Thank you for staying with us. The new owners are now providing kayaks too! And the bungalow is getting an update as well! Please come back and see us! - The Management.

Beautiful Property, quiet and relaxing

Guest: Travelbug (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
Date of Stay: 11/12/11 Review Submitted: 12/03/11

We stayed 5 nights and enjoyed the beauty of this property and the Puna Distract, the turtles in the lagoon, sound of waves, the lava tree forest, easy access to the volcano and a lot of other interesting drives and sightseeing. Do check out the farmer's markets in the area including a new night market in Kalapana. The photos of the property are exact and the cabin is an older well used vacation spot - it is clean and functional. The kitchen amenaties need to be updated/replaced (I realize things rust in the tropics but that shouldn't include cutlery, pots and cooking utensils.) Champaign pond is not worth the effort when you have your own "pond" in the front yard. There was construction happening in the property next door so be sure to ask if that is ongoing. All in all we enjoyed our stay and it met our expectations.

Owner response:Thank you for visiting us. We have replaced pots and pans and have new cutlery! Mahalo the Management

Paradise Found

Guest: Linda & Terry (Reno, Nevada)
Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 05/11/11

We just spent 4 nights at The Bungalow. It's a fabulous location for exploring the Puna district and the Volcano Park. Very peaceful and relaxing even with construction next door. The Champagne Pond is within waking distance and rivals the Ahalanui pool. If you plan on visiting the Big Island, buy the tour book entitled "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty. There's a copy generously provided at the house:) We hiked to the lava swimming pool mentioned in the tour book. VERY COOL!! The only drawback, we had no cell phone coverage while at the house. Evidently, Verizon doesn't have the most extensive coverage nationwide! AT&T supposedly works in this area. Wireless worked great though. The house and property are clean and well maintained. It looks better than the photos indicate. Kitchen has all appliances and utensils you could want but no condiments or spices. We will definitely be back for a longer stay!

Wonderful stay at Bay Bungalow

Guest: Darrell A. (Olympia, WA)
Date of Stay: 04/13/11 Review Submitted: 04/25/11

We enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing week at the Bay Bungalow. It was far too short and we would love to return soon. It was fantastic to just walk across the lawn into the bay for snorkeling and just enjoying the warm water. Everything we needed was there and the house was very comfortable. The Bay Bungalow is convenient to lots of other sites and activities including nearby Kapoho Tide Pools, Ahalanui Hot Pool, Champagne Pond, the restaurants of Pahoa and Kilauea crater hiking. We can't wait to go back.

Owner response:Aloha Lynda and Darrell: Thank you for joining us. We hope you come back again soon! The Management

Spacious, clean, private, private community, easy walking. Of the 5 places we stayed in the islands on this trip, this was our favorite. Things don't have to be brand new to be perfect and yours was.

GREAT LOCATION/POOR ACCOMODATIONS

Guest: Mitch (San Jose, CA)
Date of Stay: 11/05/10 Review Submitted: 11/15/10

The location of this bungalow is beautiful and peaceful but the accomodations are poor in our opinion. There is rust on the bathroom fixtures, door knobs, window cranks and even on a light switch. Mold and mildew on several surfaces. While the pictures look great they do not tell the true story. The nearby grocery store is very limited in its selection of quality food.

Owner response:Unfortunately, when you live right next to the ocean in Hawaii, anything that is metal will rust almost immediately. In the tropics, mildew is a constant problem, even with an excellent housekeeper paying attention to it. We will continue to do the best we can to offer low cost accommodations in a rural, beautiful tropical setting. The Management

Just Perfect

Guest: bryant and family (Bloomington, IN)
Date of Stay: 05/30/10 Review Submitted: 06/08/10

What a wonderful property! We had such a perfect vacation. The swimming in the attached cove is amazing. Sea turtles are in there at all times. Champaign Pond was a mile walk away and the Kapoho tidepools were just a short drive. The setting is just paradise. The only problem is that the house is so pleasant and relaxing you don't want to leave to see all of the wonderful sites on the eastern side of the island. Do yourself a favor and stay here if you are ever thinking of staying in the area. Thirty minutes to Volcanos and Hilo. Just under two hours to Waipio Valley. Kitchen is great. There is no longer a gas grill or a swing.

We have stayed in many places on the Hawaiian Islands and this house is still our favorite! If you are looking for a quiet place to retreat to, this is it! Waking up to the sound of the ocean waves coming into the bay, the rustle of the wind through the coconut trees and the beautiful ocean view were so relaxing! We enjoyed snorkelling in the lagoon with the sea turtles and the many colorful fish and relaxing on the lanai. We have wonderful memories of our stay!!

What an amazing & wonderful place! We have snorkeled every morning & within 5 minutes on our first ‘expedition’ we saw countless varieties of fish, sea turtles & a STING RAY! Having this cove in front of the house made it really easy for our friends who hadn’t snorkel before, and needless to say-beautiful! Going to sleep every night with the sounds of the surf & wind made for exceptional & peaceful sleep! We loved meeting Sally, the next-door neighbor! :) We are so happy to have found this place! It will definitely be on our list of favorites & will recommend it to our friends!Mahalo :)

Thank you so much for our week in Paradise! The privacy, the view and the ponds were wonderful. We’ve been to Hawaii many times, but this is a very special place. The house was clean, with flowers and comfy furnishings. Our only suggestions for improvement: long metal fork, spatula, and tongs for the BBQ, a big high-sided frying pan or wok for stir-fry, and more than one wine glass.

We wish we had been able to book for a week longer (work calls us back home). This was a wonderful book for us. So calm and peaceful out here. After seeing (some) of the sights of Big Island, we spent a couple days here – just sitting. The cottage is great, not fancy, but it has everything we needed, and it is a bit bigger than we expected. Hopefully, we will be able to visit again sometime. Looking forward to it.

Aloha All – This morning the beginning of our 4th week here we finally saw the white tip snorkel just off the entry into our little cove. He is larger than David so is 6-7’. *Previously, we’ve seen lots of Turtles and spotted a small grey morey eel also in our cove. Our just week the water was more calm and we swam with a free swimming morey that was at least 8’ long this in the mango grove lagoon at the end of our stretch of shore. This is a beautiful spot. We’ve loved watching and listening to the wind and the water be it ocean and the water be it ocean or rain. We’ve gotten to know the neighbors. I’ve loved biking for an hour or two every morning. Thank you Jack & Kitty for making your bit of Paradise available. But it’s getting towards time to go. Our anthurium are still glorious, but I’ve thrown a few faded ones out. Mostly, we miss our kids and grandkids!

Mahalo, we had a fabulous time started with a 10 hour flight from Minnesota & we were happy where we arrived. This house and view was everything & more from what we imagined. Great weather except for the last 2 days, but that was fine, its jus Paradise! We snorkeled with the Turtles and swam with the many fish in the pond. Took a drive to see Volcano & The Valley. We went to the Farmers Market in Hilo and tried many new foods for the first time. We also stopped at the Orchid Farm, Gorgeous!! Many great pictures & video to remember this vacation. The Warm Pond is a must! Snorkel & feel like you are in a bath tub! Awesome! Aloha & Mahalo. We had a wonderful week & wish it could be longer. This house has everything you need. That made for a very easy & enjoyable for many meals without having to shop but for food & drinks. The view is awesome & we look forward to coming back.

Aloha! What a beautiful place! This is truly a PARADISE! My husband & I are here celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary & we are so glad we chose this special place. The house is cozy & comfortable. Everything you need is provided. No Worries! The Oceanview is spectacular! Get up early to see the Sunrise – you’ll be happy you did! Snorkel the cove early during low tide for best visibility. Lots of fish & wildlife at edge of cove. Saw the “Friendly” sea turtle that previous people had mentioned. Can’t beat the beautiful view. Snorkeled the champagne ponds across the bay but the tide pools South of here were truly awesome! Also, don’t miss the giant, heated by volcano – Natural hot tub (for a few hundred people) a few miles South. That was incredible. Saw the Lava at night & that was also amazing. We are off to Kaui (sp) Today but will be back here again. This place is simply amazing & we are grateful to have experienced it. Thanx so much for giving us the opportunity of a Lifetime! "MAHALO" Great Place for Families too!

Thank you for sharing your property with us. It was an absolutely wonderful plan to get away to. We were impressed by the quality of the place and the completeness of the amenities. The visits by the sea turtles, eels and many species of fish in the cove were a highlight. Everyone was wonderful and helpful especially your neighbor Sally and the grounds keeper who provide us with much useful information.

How do we ever begin to say how wonderful a time we have had staying here at Kapoho Oceanfront Bungalow. The view is so beautiful and we have enjoyed the peacefulness of the setting so much that it has been hard to leave to go exploring. We came to see the Merrie Monarch Festival and have been so happy to take part in all the festivities. We booked our vacation several months in advance and were disappointed when we didn't get tickets when we ordered them, but we were able to purchase them at the entrance to the stadium. If you love hula it's the "superbowl" of hula and not to be missed! We will miss the daily arrival of the turtles in the lagoon, what a delight to see them feeding! The underwater world is beautiful! Everyone in the neighborhood was so friendly and welcoming Paradise found! It is sad to have to leave. Hawai'i no Ka oi! Hawaii is the best! Mahalo Nui Loa a me ke aloha pumehana! Unending thanks and warm affection!

We had a great time here! We saw the volcano at night and snorkeled many places around the island. Our kids enjoyed themselves greatly. Our girls loved snorkeling here and at the pond and tide pools. We saw our first banana tree and pineapple plant here in Kapoho. Swimming with the turtles was so fun for all of us. We came from rain and spitting snow in Idaho, hopefully will take the sun back with us when we go.

Aloha! Our first trip to the Big Island and we hate to leave. We had a great time seeing the sights and just lounging around the house. The Bay is beautiful and we loved seeing the Sea Turtles + all of the fish even Moray. The house is really comfortable. The swing chair on the lanai was agreat place to watch the ocean roll in and out. Put a lot of miles on the rental car and still saw only a fraction od the Island. Mahalo plenty for sharing your lovely house and Island with us! Kat and Dan P.S Yes- When we left Michigan to fly here. There was a chance of snow and it was in the 40's

After the cramped hotel room we stayed at in Honolulu, your house was a beautiful sight. We arrived in the morning and were wowed by the great house and beautiful bay out back. We were very comfortable here and enjoyed the conveinent distance to hilo and volcanoes national park. Unfortunately we didn't see any sea turtles in the pond out back, but the sunrises were beautiful.

A perfect vacation in Kapoho! We spent hours in the cove and bay. Early morning swims in Champagne pond brought the reward of sea turtles: 8 one lucky morning. The tide pools are the best for snorkeling: better than Honaunau or Kealekakua this time. As always, we enjoy drives on the red road and Waa Waa, and walking the lava at Kalapana. If you haven't been there, don't miss the Hawaiian Botanical Gardens: Stunning! Two weeks a year is never enough.

Had an excellent week at your lovely cottage on the cove. It was perfect for us. We enjoyed the cove snorkeling, as well as snorkeling in the bay and over in the tidepools “next door” in Vacationland. We had a wonderful drive & hike around Volcanoes Nat’l Park and then a helicopter trip to see the red hot lava at peak, down the side and flowing into the ocean!! A truly wonderful experience and memory of the Big Island.

We came to this area of Puna so we could see how it “felt”; each part of the island has such a different feel. We’ve been searching out an area to relocate to, semi-retire, enjoy more of what life has to offer, and we’ve found it in this area!We found out today that our offer was accepted on a beautiful house which soon we will be calling home.Hawaii is a special place for those who seek it out.

This has been the longest and the shortest week of our lives. There is far too much to say about this island for us to do it justice in this small book, and I think it’s all been said before anyway. But this place, this magical spot at the edge of the sunrise, obliges us to find a few words. The house is beautiful, cozy, very thoughtfully furnished and equipped… in a land of contrasts and extremes, this house is the ultimate hideaway, the height of civilization in the depths of the jungle where the big fish play. We’ve planned for 2 years to rent several houses around these reefs & pools, and last night we gathered to acknowledge our joy and the grace that brought us here. the house was full of children, wine and smiles. It felt like the only world any of us has ever known. We will cherish these past few days for the rest of our lives, and are already planning more trips here with people we love enough to share this heaven with.

Oh wow! Getting here in the dark of a moonless night was a trip unto itself, but to wake up the next morning to this gorgeous place – all I could say was, Oh wow!I’ve loved it all; this cozy cottage, the sights, sounds, smells, the brisk trade winds, the unpredictable could bursts. Could barely pry myself away for short side trips to Pahoa, the primordial Lava Tree Park, crowded Isaac Hale Beach Park & the exhilarating drive along the coast (Hwy 137) between Kapoho and Kalapana. Time passed too quickly and I’m loath to leave. Maybe I can stay longer another time!

What an awe inspiring spot! Thank you so much for allowing us to experience the magic of the Big Island, especially Puna!! John & I couldn’t have dreamed of a better place to spend the last 8 days…The cottage was the perfect location to explore many of the wondrous spots found within 2 hours – and most within 20 minutes! – of Kapoho: Warm Ponds, Green Lake, tidal pools, natural sauna, case, lava tubes, volcano craters, turtles. The snorkeling in front of the house was absolutely AMAZING!!! So many different types of fish… some larger than me!

We love the Bay, Champagne Pond, the ocean breeze & the birds’ wake-up call. Despite our plane getting here a day late & being sick we are thoroughly relaxed & refreshed! By the way, Pahoa family medical clinic was not too bad. I told them I had to get in that morning and they squeezed me in, and I didn’t have to wait too long. They were friendly and understanding. Mahalo for the flowers & musical greeting. It was a refreshing arrival. We will be back.

We completely enjoyed our stay here. It was everything we hoped it would be and more. we enjoyed waking up to the birds singing, going for and early morning snorkel with the honu and eating fresh fruit for breakfast. We enjoyed hours of reading out by the cove, listening to the waves crashing in the distance, soaking up the sun, watching the honu swim around out front and all the butterflies fluttering in the warm trade wind breeze. We spent evenings looking up through the coconut fronds at constellations in the night sky with the BBQ grill cooking dinner and cocktails on the lanai. We enjoyed just being here with all it has to offer – everything we can’t do in the frozen dark Alaskan winter back home. The neighbors are so kind and generous, their Aloha spirit was much appreciated. Mahalo for all the extra touches you did to make our stay so wonderful. The Christmas poinsettia, the fresh antheriums, the welcoming music, and all the little things that made it feel like home. Kapoho is a very special place and we look forward to coming back next year.
