Hale Kai" ("Ocean House") is an historic estate located on 3 pristine landscaped acres with over 500' of oceanfront, a tennis court, a swimming pool and one of the only private docks on the Big Island. The compound was designed by world-renowned architect, Vladimir Ossipoff - the "Frank Lloyd Wright of Hawaii" - and consists of 7 bedrooms and 6 baths spread out over 4 houses and cottages, with the entire property being enclosed behind a gated 5' high lava rock wall for exclusive privacy and security.
"Hale Kai" is landscaped with beautiful tropical gardens and palm trees, including the arched tree under which actor John Wayne was married in the early 1960s. Because of its unique location, the property offers a sweeping 270 degrees of oceanfront viewing over the sparkling deep blue Pacific Ocean and the beautiful sapphire/turquoise waters of Keauhou Bay.
The atmosphere of "Hale Kai" is classic "Old Hawaii" and once you enter the property, it's as if you're a million miles from anywhere and you've gone 50 years back in time - but with all the conveniences of the modern day lifestyle. The unbeatable privacy and natural beauty is only enhanced by the constant sounds of the breaking waves on your very own private oceanfront!
Historic "Hale Kai" is the perfect Hawaiian vacation spot for romantic getaways, family vacations, reunions, retreats and weddings. It will truly be your own private resort. Without leaving the premises, you can enjoy tennis (private court on the property), kayaking( 2 kayaks are included), snorkeling (gear is included), swimming, diving, shore fishing, sunbathing, hammock laying, sunset watching and more.
Within 1 mile of the property (either driving or walking) you'll find world class golf courses, genuine Hawaiian luaus, a dive shop, fantastic restaurants, snorkel/dive excursion boats, big game fishing boats, kayak and canoe rentals, movie theatres, a drug store, a supermarket, health/facial spas and luxury shopping.
Words and pictures cannot come close to describing this unique and magnificent property. After you have seen and experienced Hale Kai, there will be little wonder why Hawaiian royalty, including King Kamehameha I himself, once resided here.

We loved Hale Kai! My family of 15 was very comfortable on this property. Unbelievable views, very nice sleeping arrangements with plenty of privacy for couples. We particularly enjoyed the birds, the landscaping, and the wonderful outside living. The pool was great for my 6-yr-old granddaughter--she liked the ocean, but spent far more time in the pool. Most of us adults quickly became addicted to the dock, the kayak, and the snorkeling. There was plenty of snorkel gear and other toys. My one regret is I didn't use the tennis court--I'm not a big tennis player, but I wanted to give it a try. The ocean kept calling my name instead, I guess. The well-equipped kitchen was sufficient for our party of accomplished cooks, including one professional chef and a food blogger. Plenty of storage, utensils, you name it. The laundry room was functional and convenient as well. The furnishings, especially in the main house, were elegant, yet practical, and comfortable and appealing. The circular tall table in the living room was a favorite of mine--it seems like it was carved from a single giant section of a tree trunk; just gorgeous. The centerpiece of this property is the outstanding location. Near Kona, but no noisy crowding or traffic. A very nice shopping center a mile or so up the hill. A canoe club practicing most days. Each morning at dawn, across the bay, you could just hear a group of people greet the sun in what appeared--in the provided binoculars--to be a native chant. It just doesn't get better than this. Thanks for hosting the trip of a lifetime! Incidentally--if you google images for John Wayne wedding pictures, I'm pretty sure I recognized a tree in one of the photos...Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

FABULOUS!! We had a family reunion at Hale Kai to celebrate my sister's 60th birthday. The 12 of us came in from Alabama, California, Florida & Texas. What an amazing estate! We enjoyed sitting on the patio while the birds & parrots continuously entertained us, relaxing on the hammocks beside the water and watching whale blows and even a breach or two while we witnessed the most vibrant sunsets! We took advantage of the tennis court, the kayak and the grill. Great location, lovely grounds, and extremely comfortable for our family!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Hale Kai is a paradise for a family Christmas. We have 5 adult children and 11 grandchildren who live in Australia, California, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Getting them all together was a dream and Hale Kai was the dream place. With 3 acres, the grandchildren had the freedom to explore and make up games and have adventures. The accommodations were perfect with 4 buildings and abundant central space to be together while providing many options to be alone. Getting supplies, groceries, etc. was just a couple of blocks away. We walked to the Sheraton to view the manta rays. We loved snorkeling and kayaking with the turtles and fish off our own private dock. We also booked a snorkeling tour on the Fair Wind and walked over. The grandchildren loved the pool. All in all the perfect family Christmas. Mitch, thanks for having such a great place. Our 9 days in paradise. Pat and Gary North CarolinaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Our daughter was married at Hale Kai on Oct. 3, 2009. There was no question where the wedding would take place. It was beautiful, romantic and very accommodating. Our family (local and mainland)stayed on the property for the wedding week. We all agreed it was the perfect spot for a wedding/vacation package. I would rent it again. Hopefully for my 60th.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

What an incredible blessing to have been able to spend our honeymoon at Hale Kai! We snorkeled with the yellow fish and sea turtles, kayaked with a pod of dolphins, and Lyle even surfed fantastic waves, all within view of the front yard of this great property. Every morning we drank coffee on the lanai while watching the exotic birds that love to find food on the grounds. Every day around noon wild parrots would come and feed in the top of a particular tree. At the end of the day we perched on the oceanside of the house so we wouldn't miss the fantastic sunset. There was no need for us to look for beautry, relaxation, recreation, or adventure anywhere else. There is truly no place more beautiful or more special on the Big Island than Hale Kai.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Our family celebrated our Mother's 75th birthday at Hale Kai....our parents, siblings and spouses....for a total of 12 family members. Hale Kai is a beautiful and magical place and we all had the most wonderful time! We took advantage of all that the estate had to offer....from snorkeling, fishing, playing tennis, kayaking, laying in the hammocks, swimming, playing cards and games, making wonderful drinks in the blender, barbecuing on the grill, painting the beautiful flowers and landscaping, watching the surfers and outriggers, going into town to lunch and shop.....never a dull moment! We were sad to have to leave after spending nine nights at Hale Kai. We're already planning on coming back next year and we hope to stay longer next time! Special thanks to Merry Anne for the wonderful flowers she brought! Thank you Mitch for sharing your estate with the Butler family! Another amazing and flawless event at Hale Kai.... My client's were so unbelieveably happy with my choice for Hale Kai for their Febuary nuptials. With a guest list of about 100 and most of them coming from Europe, Hale Kai was the perfect homestead they were looking for to entertain their family and friends all week long with their wedding being the finale of the trip. As a local planner in Kona, I have produced many weddings at Hale Kai and the property continues to be my favorite locale for classic, unspoiled, Hawaiian elegance. The vast grounds enveloped by the Bay, nestled under mature Keawe Trees,is by far the most pristine site on the Big Island for an amzingly private, intimate and memorable affair. Thank You for allowing me to continue to share this property with my clients..... For Couples interested in planning their wedding at Hale Kai, please visit me on the web at Pacific coast Host (dot. com) I would be delighted to discuss the possibilities of your event and share my experience with you regarding this lovely estate.Did you find this review helpful? My wife and I just had our wedding at Hale Kai this past April. It was such an amazing day. Not only was the location spectacular, but the weather just decided to bless us with blue skies, a clear horizon, and an amazing sunset. Both of us having been born and raised in Kona, it was very meaningful for my wife and I to have our wedding on the Big Island. To have each of our families come together at this beautiful place on the Kona coast was very special. The landscaping for this property is amazing, with ancient twisted keawe trees and giant outcroppings of lava rock surrounded by a sea of comfortable grass for our bare feet. The natural beauty of kona has been woven into the artistic landscape in a way that sets it apart from any place I've been before. Truely this was the coolest place I've ever had the fortune of holding a celebration at. The days surrounding the wedding were spent lounging in the sun and shade to our hearts content, the ocean a few feet from our heads. H-Bay was even breaking that weekend, so I got a little surfing in too, as I could paddle to the break from the private dock at the edge of the property. I could not have asked for more; what a beautiful place.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
