The House ´Cal Cotillo´ is an impressive medieval house between Tarragona 30 km and Barcelona 60 km, only 8 km from the sea, in the area known as the Penedès, a wine cultivating area in Catalonia. The tiny village Saifores, surrounded by vineyards, is situated at in a more populated zone with nature reserves and uninhabited hills in it’s back.
We (a young Dutch professional couple) bought a ruin of a medieval house (14th century) in the village Saifores. We fully restored it and now it´s a comfortable house that combines medieval charm and 21st century luxury.
The house 250m2 has 4 bedrooms, 2 large bathrooms and a third toilet, a kitchen-diner, a large living room, an entrance hall with an impressive gothic arch and stone stairs, a large garage and pantry. The whole house has high ceilings. Thanks to the thick walls the house is nice and cool in summer.

The house is one of 6 houses in the Calle Mayor, or Mainstreet, of a tiny village (Saifores) with less then 60 houses and 100 inhabitants. The people in Saifores are very friendly, welcoming and, being a small village, it´s very safe place for children playing on the street. The village frequently organises ´fiestas´ and/or nice meals for the neighborhood.
Although it´s a small village, it certainly isn´t isolated. All amenities are within short distance of Saifores as the village lies in the centre of a populated valley. You´ll find several supermarkets within 3 km, a brand new hospital lies at 4 km, cinemas, daily fresh markets, shops, railwaystations into Barcelona and rest of Spain, it´s all there.
The clean sandy beach can be found at about 8 kilometers, or 10 minutes by car. Practically the complete coastline consists of the famous yellow sandy beaches, that gave the coast its name (Costa Dorada = Golden Coast). Even in high season there´s never a problem to park your car and find a nice place for your towels.
The Penedes area is a perfect base for a visit to Catalonia, you would probably need at least several weeks to see it all. Barcelona with al it´s culture and attractions is only at 60 km or 50 minutes by easy trainride away. The delightful Roman city of Tarragona lies at 30 km. The Penedes itself is renowned for it´s wines and champain (´Cava´), so finding a winehouse (´Bodega´) to experience a winetasting won´t be any problem. The valley is about 10 km wide and quite populated, but on both sides are large nature reserves where you can walk or mountainbike. More inland you´ll find historic cities like Montblanc or Prades and you´ll find some of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in the convents of Poblet and Santes Creus. The Pyrenees are only at about 2 hours driving distance

Why the Owner Chose Saifores
In 2000/2001 we lived for a year in Spain and fell in love with the country and the people. We returned to the Netherlands to make the money we needed to restore the ruin in Spain. In 2009 we left our well payed jobs in Holland again and returned to Spain to live here the whole year around.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We believe that the best way to visit a foreign country is staying in a house and just try to really join everyday life there. Even if it´s only for one or two weeks, you´ll get a lot closer to understanding the people than you would passing by in a tourist-bus.

A beautiful holiday home. The cleanliness and attention to detail was excellent, both inside and outside the property. The welcome which we received on our arrival was warm and the local wine which the owner left for us was excellent.The area is beautiful to explore and we visited three wineries, the tours were all very personal and interesting.Overall we had a very relaxing experience. It felt like a true home from home for all of us and we will both recommend it highly to others and we also hope to return for another holiday in the future.
Recommended for:Sightseeing.

We were two couples and we stayed at Cal Cotillo for 5 days. It is a wonderful place. We enjoyed the great herb garden and the well stocked kitchen. The house has been beautifully restored and the outside patios offer several options depending of where the sun is. We particularly enjoyed the patio off the kitchen. The restoration is sympathetic and thoughtful. The workmanship excellent. This is a real gem.
Recommended for:Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, age 55+, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.
