Owner info

Year Purchased: 1850

About the owner: We are Tom, Dave, Jim and Cathy Lyon, four siblings who inherited this house from our great uncle Robert Lyon back in 1982. It's been in the family for 150 years, and we love the sense of tradition and place that this house provides. We come up as often as we can, and make it available to others when we're not able to be here.

Why the Owner Chose Rochester:
This farmhouse was built in the late 1700s and has been in our family since about 1850. Our Dad was born in this house, as was his sister, and our grandfather built part of it himself. Our grandparents raised cows, pigs, and hay here, made maple syrup, sold gasoline and baked goods to passing motorists, and gave family concerts in Rochester and other local towns. Our Dad remembers Robert Frost visiting and reading poetry in the living room.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest, and has a very peaceful feel. In the background you can hear the White River rushing by, and a short walk takes you to a swimming hole and fishing spots. The town of Rochester, a couple miles away, is a classic Vermont village, with a lovely bandstand on the town green, the fabulous Rochester Cafe, and the delightful Seasoned Books and Bakery. There are countless easy trips to beautiful mountain peaks and lakes, charming towns and antique stores. The local folks are friendly and welcoming. We love this place and hope you will too.
