Canaan Valley (pronounced Kah-nane) is a wild and beautiful land of rugged Appalachian Mountains, laying within the borders of Tucker County in northeastern West Virginia. Canaan Valley is the highest valley (35,000 acres) east of the Mississippi, fifteen miles long and five miles wide. The valley floor is 3200 feet above sea level. Surrounding the valley is the 950, 000 acre Monongahela National Forest. Canaan Valley truly is natures’ own playground, a haven for all seasons.

Winter. When the mountains are covered in a blanket of snow (150 to 200 inches annually), there is skiing at two resorts. There’s even snow tubing at Canaan State Park and tobogganing at Backwater Falls State Park. You can cross country ski at White Grass Touring Center or ice skate at Canaan State Park.

Spring. When the land comes alive with nature’s awakening, it’s is a time for hiking, biking, golfing, fishing, wildlife viewing, and bird-watching. Spring brings some of the best trout fishing in the east.

Summer. The time to view lush beauty while enjoying the cool refreshing mountain air. The daytime temperatures barely break 80 degrees. Summer activities may include swimming, golfing, tennis, horseback riding, fishing and hiking, to name a few. You can take a scenic chairlift ride at Timberline Resort. This allows you to hike the ski trails.

Fall. When nature paints the hills and mountains in her spectacular colors. A perfect time to enjoy the quaint mountain towns, shop and browse the antique, gift and specialty shops. There are fall festivals and fairs. Be sure to enjoy the blazing colors of the extensive forests.
