RAFIKI HOUSE, SAG HARBOR, HAMPTONS VACATION RENTAL
Rafiki House, Sag Harbor, is an ideal rental home, so named because its owner was raised in Kenya, where the word "rafiki" means "friend" in Kishuaeli. This is a charming, completely renovated, and upgraded, 200-year-old vacation home within the Sag Harbor village historic district on a pretty, tree-lined street flanked by other historic homes. The house is of traditional clapboard, with two floors, a full basement, and a full attic - all renovated for maximum use and comfort. In 2008, the house was completely re-sided with cedar siding and new insulation so that it is comfortably cool in summer and retains heat in winter.
This charming rental home is built on a slight hill, so the view from the deck overlooks not only my gorgeous garden, but those of several neighbors as well, giving the impression of a private park at the back of the house.
The ground floor of this Hamptons family vacation home has a large living room with a piano and high efficiency wood-burning stove, a bedroom and bathroom suite, full eat-in kitchen, and laundry, with front and side entrances. A huge deck with deck furniture and barbeque is accessible from the kitchen. Steps from the side entrance lead to the garden.
The first floor of this Hamptons vacation home has the large master bedroom with a walk-in closet, a smaller bedroom, and a full bath with hot-water jet tub. The attic, perched high above the hill, is the size of the house and is a wonderfully light and spacious TV den, office, sleeping area for guests or children's play area.
In this rental home, the finished basement (heated, painted, tiled floor) provides access to the brand new oil burner and new sealed oil tank, as well as plenty of storage space for bikes, skis, etc. It also contains a large desk, office chair and shelves and can be used as an extra work space.
Rafiki House is furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques and found pieces that the owner has collected over more than 20 years throughout her many travels all over the world. It's colorful, full of wonderful paintings by local artists, and comfortable - designed for easy vacation living as well as more formal Hamptons-style entertainment. Eat at the long table in the kitchen or at the round, antique table in the living room - or even out on the deck. Rafiki House is ideal for summer vacations, and is also available during the winter.
This lovely rental home is fully furnished and equipped with high quality bedding, towels, kitchen appliances, and enough crockery and cutlery to entertain up to 20 guests. Park right outside the front door; walk to the village in three minutes or drive or ride to the nearby Sound and ocean beaches. Two doors away, Espresso Deli provides Italian gourmet food.
Rafiki House is the ideal vacation rental home in the Hamptons, right in the heart of the village of Sag Harbor's historic district and a 5-minute walk to Main Street, with its quaint shops, several restaurants, classic movie theater and the lovely harbor. Ocean beaches are a 15-minute drive from Rafiki House and Long Island Sound beaches are only 10 minutes away.

Why the Owner Chose Sag Harbor
Sag Harbor is one of the most livable places I know and of course, being in the Hamptons makes it even more special and a very good location for a vacation rental! The house attracts people who love the accessibility to the Village and the proximity of beaches, sports facilities and boating facilities as well as all the nearby amenities such as the famed movie theater, many restaurants and great shops along Main Street. In addition, it's just a short drive to the villages of Southampton, Bridgehampton and East Hampton, and not far to the fishing boats, seals, whale watching and surfing at Montauk. Sag Harbor is only two-and-a-half hours from Manhattan - taking one from urban life to country environment in a short time. The weather here is also great! Sag Harbor is routinely ten degrees or so warmer than points east, yet enjoys refreshing breezes.
The Unique Benefits at this Vacation Home
My house is ideal for individuals, couples or families with kids. It is a ten-minute walk from Main Street and a short walk from playgrounds and the harbor. The house itself has all the charm of the traditional Sag Harbor whaling homes of the nineteenth century while enjoying all the mod cons of the twenty-first century. The kitchen is well equipped for private dining as well as entertaining. T he bedrooms are spacious and filled with sunlight. The attic loft is the most delightful place to work, watch TV or as a den for children. The living room is filled with books, music and art by outstanding local artists who also happen to be my friends. The large deck enjoys a lovely view over several gardens and has sunshine all day long. The house is comfortable, colorful and cozy at any time of year.
Owner's Map of Sag Harbor
I was born and raised in Kenya, so it's been a long journey from the bush farm of my early years to the picket fences of Sag Harbor, New York! But after living in my lovely house for 27 years, I can honestly say that it's home...not just because the house itself is beautiful and I raised my daughter here, but because the village, the surrounding landscape, the beaches and the community itself give me the best quality of life that I could imagine.
I love being able to walk from my house down to Main Street where I meet friends to go to the movies, eat at any of the several great restaurants in town, have a drink at the American Hotel, browse the terrific bookstore, have a cup of tea or a hot chocolate at Java Nation, get anything I need for the house at the hardware store, find reasonably priced great clothes at D.J. Hart's or simply wander down to the harbor to watch the boats. Alternatively, I can drive ten minutes to Long Beach - my favorite place on a hot summer's evening to relax and watch the sunset - or I can drive fifteen minutes to the ocean beaches and walk for miles along the pristine sands. Now if this isn't quality of life, I don't know what is!
I'm a writer, teacher and film maker and you can learn more about me and my work on my website.
