When four women friends decided to spend a night in Idyllwild, we wanted convenience to shopping and eating. The House in the Pines is in a perfect location, with restaurants and shopping close by. The house was clean and inviting. With three bedrooms and three baths, we had privacy and comfort. I would highly reccomend the Gastrognome for breakifast and lunch, and it's just around the corner !Recommended for: Tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you Kay, We look forward to your return. Good repeat tenants receive a 5% discount. Mary Ann

I stayed in the Cedar St. Elite Mountain home and had a blast! I was there for the quilt festival and found that I was only a few minutes away. This house is located one block from the center of a very picturesque touristry town which welcomes visitors. I enjoyed being able to walk out the front door and hear music , get a bite to eat at any number of great restaurants, buy an ice cream, go to the movies or just amble around. I found the house welcoming, clean and decorated in restful colors. The family room sofas are a beautiful rose colored flowered print that I found very charming. the master bedroom made me feel like a Hollywood star and is so romantic. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans and dishes and comfortable to be in . I loved looking at the stars while I relaxed in the jaquzzi. A great place to retreat and read a book or to be close to the music and the action of Idyllwild. I really enjoyed being able to walk, have a drink and listen to outdoor music and then go back ta fabulous home to tuck my feet under me and relax with T.V. ,a book ,family or friend.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you. it was very thoughtful of you to write such a pleasant review, Mary Ann

Staying at your home was a refreshing treat from the fast paced life in the city. My family and I enjoyed a much needed fall weekend getaway. I was able to make a beautiful bacon and eggs breakfast for everyone and serve it on the outside patio. It was nice to be able to enjoy the morning sunshine and dine under the trees. We also really enjoyed taking a late night dip in the jacuzzi. The night sky was so clear and beautiful. We saw some raccoons hiding in the trees and were able to see a ton of stars. We even saw a shooting star. One of the really nice things is that it is such a close walk to town. We were able to walk to the grocery store and to church all due to the central location of your property. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to be back soon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Jul 15, 2011 - Neill from Solana beach, CA "Dear MaryAnn, Elizabeth and I are back in Cardiff enjoying our home here. We want to let you know what a pleasure it was for us to spend a week at your house on Cedar Street in Idyllwild. We spent the entire week there with daughter Elisa (from Boulder, CO) and had an overnight visit from daughter Cristina and her three children. They really enjoyed the pool, and we really appreciate the safety fencing you had installed--it gave us all a lot of freedom and peace of mind to know that the tykes couldn't get near the water without adult supervision. Son Keil also spent two nights with us when the kids were not in residence, so the place was never crowded. You were right about how spacious and family-friendly the Cedar Street house is. I don't know about the Fern Valley house, but Cedar Street was quite spacious and a great place for us to spend the week. Being in the center of town and able to walk to most any place we wanted to go for shopping and dining was a real plus. The kids enjoyed the nearby playground at town hall--something we hadn't realized was right next-door! In fact, we were so pleased with Cedar Street, it's central location and unique pool that we are considering a week next year. We'll stay in touch and let you know as soon as we can get commitments from other family members. About the only thing we found inconvenient was the lack of an internet connection at the house. Both Elizabeth and Elisa were obliged to work most days, and they had to turn in reports, files and papers. They ended up sitting in cafes and using the wi-fi connections there in order to send off their work (and get back replies). Elizabeth's suggestion is that you might consider adding internet service to your Time-Warner cable, and that this may attract people who need to work at least some days while in Idyllwild. Again, many thanks for the thoughtful touches and overall good maintenance of the house, and for the great instructions about how to deal with whatever we might need. Sincerely, Neill Bell"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Jul 10, 2011 - Mary Lou from Chatsworth, CA "Hi Mary Ann, We just got home a little while ago and I wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had at your "cabin." It is a wonderful home with every amenity. We had an absolutely perfect time and the family really enjoyed themselveswe will definitely be renting from you again, when we can afford it. It brought back so many wonderful memories of my time up there as a child. I took my children to our old cabin to see where I spent so many weekends in my youth. Some people stopped and were taking a flyer from the box in front of your home as we were leaving. We told them what a wonderful home it is and that they would truly enjoy staying there. Perhaps you will get another customer! I would love to meet you and possibly take you to lunch some time, if you are amenable to it. Thank you, again, for a most wonderful weekend. We hope to make this an annual trip now. Best regards,"Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Jul 10, 2011 - Neill from Solano Beach, CA "Dear MaryAnn, We arrived late afternoon Sunday, and enjoyed the 4th of July parade yesterday. The Cedar Street house is just wonderful, and we've been enjoying everything here. There are so many nice touches that make this an enjoyable "home away from home." Things seem to be in good working order, and we don't have any questions about how things work--thanks to your abundant notes. I wanted to let you know that we noticed a faint cigarette smell in the master bedroom (the fireplace smoke in the living room and family room are most welcome), and assure you that it was here when we arrived on Sunday. It isn't very strong, but as lifelong non-smokers, we noticed it. Again, we can't thank you enough for all the work you have done to make our stay here pleasant and comfortable! Jul 5, 2011 - Mary Lou from Chatsworth, CA "Our stay at the "Cabin in the Pines" could not have been more perfect. The "cabin" is truly a well appointed home with every amenity one could ask for. The pool and spa were an added feature for a truly relaxing weekend. It had been many years since I had been to Idyllwild and thought it was time to share it with my own grown children. They loved it and we all hope to make this a yearly event. " Rating: 5 (out of 5)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Although the furnishings were shown to be dated in the photos, we expected a clean home. On arrival we immediately phoned the owner, who sent over the housekeeper to get rid of cobwebs, poolguy to clean pool & spa, and someone came the next day to sweep the yard. Even after "cleaning" spa was still slimy when we stepped in, and one guest even fell. Yard required far more than sweeping; there was trash lying here, there and everywhere, even after "cleaning". Decaying carpet probably still lying on the patio. Post-visit, we submitted a 2-page summary of items either broken, in disrepair or unclean, with photographs, recommending corrections, and requested a partial refund. Owner's response was that the concerns we mentioned "did not render the cabin uninhabitable". Use of the word "cabin" implies the expectation of rusticity, but this was a house, not a cabin. Compared to a NY slum, it may be legally habitable, but that is a very low standard for a vacation rental, at any price, much less a premium rate. Kitchen cupboards were grimy; kitchen light valence was grease laden, and cover was falling out; shears in master bedroom were discolored with dust and years without laundering; BBQ was filled with old drippings, which we had to burn off before it could be used; cobwebs floated everywhere until owner sent housekeeper back; BBQ cover was dirty, and ripped in at least 2 places; a wheel was off the dishwasher rack, so rack tended to fall out onto the door of the DW; curtains falling off the rod in one bedroom; beanbags "chairs" in living room had no substance to sit on; shower in handicap bathroom had constant drip; electric outlet in same bathroom didn't work. Living room slider was off its tracks; owner's initial response was to "use another door", but apparently had a change of heart, and sent someone over to fix it. It was a disaster. Owner had said no one ever complained before, but the guest book had the leavings of some pages that had been torn out, so I doubt that is true, and would find it hard to believe anyway, based on the really terrible condition of this home. My friends and I have rented many properties on VRBO and elsewhere, in the past and have never had this kind of experience, or any reason to complain in the past.Owner response: Thank you for your post. I am so sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time enjoying our Cabin in the Pines. Our team did every thing possible to take care of your needs. It is understandable that the yard was in disarray after a mountain wind and rain storm. In addition, it is expected to find a few cobwebs here and there given the nature of having a cabin in the woods. Our team, the house keeper, the pool/spa serviceman, and the glass door man went right over to address the problems you encountered as soon as we got your call. Further yard maintenance was done the next morning at your request. After your needs were taken care of there was no further communication. Since we did tend to all of your concerns,I am very surprised to find that you have written such a hurtful review. It appears we have a distinct difference of opinion regarding decorating style and upkeep. There is a certain charm about this cabin which is nestled beneath the pines and oaks and elms which many people find enchanting and inviting. However this does cause a daily downfall of pine needles. The architect of the cabin reflects the 40;s. The beautiful drapes and shears in the Master Bedroom are reminiscent of the movies of this era,and are taken down yearly and dry cleaned as are all the other curtains and valences. I do have a professional housekeeping crew come in after each tenant leaves, to insure the house is properly cleaned and ready for the next tenant. A pool and spa technician services the pool and spa once and sometimes twice a week. General yard maintenance is performed once a month on a regular basis and is in accordance with the fire code. Other maintenance is done, as needed ,for any necessary repairs that come up. However, despite the difference of opinion, we do appreciate your feedback just as much as we appreciate the feedback of our other guests. With the welcomed feedback from our guests we continue to grow and give our guests a memorable vacation experience. I look forward to my tenants returning year after year and I make every effort to make their stay as comfortable and happy as I can, because, I really do care. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review. Elite Mountain Homes

Hi, Mary Ann, Our stay at Cedar Street was very nice, everything we hoped for based upon the information you provided about your Idyllwilde "cabin."We had a wonderful time, especially the disabled member of our group who appreciated not having to live with the usual encumbrances she faces when she travels. We enjoyed the town and the very friendly atmosphere as well as the great dining when we ate out. I first met Idyllwilde in the early 60s when I attend classes at the original art camp when it was owned and run by USC. I remember how I grew to love the place. I'm happy it has maintained its local charm and appreciate the way the arts have combined so nicely with it. Thank you for your hospitality and warmth. DeannaDid you find this review helpful?
