Rye cottage description

Wake in comfort to the sound of the sea, explore the misty brooding Romney Marsh, then warm up in the many atmospheric pubs with intriguing histories, resident ghouls, roaring fireplaces, cracking ales and tasty pub grub, walk along England’s finest beach, look out across the shimmering blue sea and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered another world….. Welcome to Coastguard Cottage’s, welcome to smugglers country.

Book your stay at Coastguard Cottages and discover a landscape full of myth’s and legends, surrounded by the haunting loneliness of Romney Mash and the vast stretch of historic coast.

Built in this secluded spot, to help guard against smuggling and invasion, these beautiful renovated coastguard cottage’s are the perfect location for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Some say it is wild and desolate. Artists and writers find it inspirational. In reality, it is a 'green' paradise - more than a hundred square miles of unspoilt countryside rolling down from wooded hills to meet broad sands and shingle beaches - and a land of legend. Sense the touch of history in the Cinque Port towns of Rye, New Romney, Lydd and in the loneliness of the thirteen medieval churches which stand above meadows grazed by thousands of sheep.

Watch wild life at the vast RSPB nature reserve at Dungeness and along the solitary beaches by the famous lighthouse or visit one of the many atmospheric battlefields, stately homes, castles, ancient port towns and Norman ruins scattered across coast and countryside.

Coastguards Lookout is located in a gloriously peaceful and secluded position in Jury's Gap at the end of the village of Camber and adjoining an area designated an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Quiet and peaceful, yet only a few minutes drive to the medieval town of Rye, the cottage has easy access to all amenities, including the local shops, and many excellent pubs and restaurants for eating out.

Coastguards Cottage is the perfect seaside retreat, listen to the rhythm of the waves echoing along our deserted beach and the surrounding nature reserves ringing out with a chorus of seabird colonies. Ancient historical sites reverberate with the footsteps of the past.

Coastguards Lookout is a cosy and beautifully appointed bolt-hole in a kind of semi-wilderness you wouldn’t really expect to find within such a short drive of London. Set back behind the sea wall and barely a moments walk from the beach, ‘Coastguards’ Lookout is the first of a group of Coastguard Cottages, built in 1875 that stand in splendid isolation at Jury’s Gap, beyond the end of Camber Village and which adjoin an extensive SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) that extends from within the cottage grounds, a full eight miles to Dungeness. Quite wild, yet intensely peaceful, with dramatic views in every direction, ‘Coastguards Lookout has recently been sumptuously renovated, decorated with wit and a playful seaside style and furnished with nothing but comfort and blissful relaxation in mind. The Cottage is still only a few minutes drive from the many attractions of the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye and it has easy access to all necessary amenities, including local farm shops selling Salt Marsh Lamb straight from the marshes, fishmongers selling straight from the fishing boats and a wide variety of excellent welcoming pubs and restaurants for dining out.

With miles of often-empty beach, a towering sky overhead and wind fresh with ozone straight from the Atlantic, ‘Coastguards Lookout’ is all about relaxation. Bathed in comfort, peace and quiet, you cannot help but unwind; it is the perfect place to kick off your shoes, shake the city dust off your hair and wander back to that bit of yourself that gets lost in the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Stepping into Coastguards Lookout you will immediately see the great care and attention that has been given in the renovation from its former life as a Coastguards property to a contemporary and cosy, but character filled holiday cottage. Retaining all traditional features, but enhanced with modern furnishing and equipment to cater for most, if not all requirements, the cottage is blessed with all you need to make it a home from home. The open plan kitchen/dining room, with a breakfast bar made from rustic locally sourced wood is complemented by a coffee machine, induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and music player.

And when the day is done, you can step through to the snug lounge. After a day out, or when the evening chill settles in, with its comfortable furnishings and bright log burning stove, it is the perfect place to relax and watch TV, play games on the X-Box, or read that book you keep promising yourself, with just the crackle, warmth and dancing flames of the fire and the distant crash of the waves to disturb you.

Head up stairs and you will find the large master bedroom with its super king sized bed and expansive views over the sheep studded marsh, where the local smugglers plied their trade in years gone by. Here a long and renewing nights rest is guaranteed.
Across the landing is the family bathroom with a large and luxurious walk in shower and views out across the bay and the sea.
The second bedroom has two zip link 3-foot beds, perfect for children, or pushed together, for a couple. With another stunning view of the sea, it also has a small flat screen TV, in case you tire of watching the extraordinary sunsets!

Outside, the wood decked south facing rear garden is decorated with buoys and features an extraordinary fence made entirely from reclaimed sea-groynes. With another dining table and benches outside the back door, it is the ideal place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine, or two, or three, while glowing with the satisfaction of exploring one of the many historical sights or taking in a hike along a coastal path.

Coastguards Lookout also benefits from access to an extended garden; a large area of grass beside the cottage that is perfect for ball games or just lazing around in the sun, and definitely a place to sip a sundowner watching the setting sun slip away.

Relax...? With the owner’s compliments on your arrival there will be some goodies to help get your holiday started. A bottle of wine from the highly regarded local vineyard ‘Chapel Down’, home- baked biscuits, tea, coffee and fresh milk, and of course a generous supply of logs for the wood burner.
‘Coastguards Lookout’ also provides all that you need for a stress free holiday, from fine bed linen, fluffy towels and bathrobes to toilet tissue and dishwasher tablets, so that's a few less things to pack for when you come and stay!

                      Castles

Over the centuries East Sussex & Kent, have been the invader’s gateway to Britain. Being the closest point to mainland Europe, these two counties have witnessed some of the most important moments in this country’s history.

Early invasion and the founding of England happened in Kent. It was at Pegwell Bay in Ramsgate that 40,000 disciplined Roman soldiers marched in to conquer the country.

Several hundred of years later it was East Sussex that was the site of the last successful invasion. Probably the most famous date in English history, 1066, when the Norman army led by William the Conqueror stood victorious on Senlac ridge, now known as Battle.

                      Wine Tasting

The mention of English wine may raise a few eyebrows, but the wines from this region are winning many awards and sceptics over and a visit to a local vineyard will show you why.

East Sussex & Kent’s sunny and dry climate along with it’s similar sub soil to the Champagne region of France means that our vineyards can produce sparkling wines that are often beating their French counterparts.

So during your stay, why not pay a visit to one of the many vineyards in the area who are happy for you to come and spit, slurp and swill the fruits of their labour.

                      Walking & Hiking

Enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape, marshland, green hills, woodlands and spectacular coastline at your own pace. Strolling while waves whisper on the shore. Racing, breathless across breezy downs. The thrilling sight of dazzling white cliffs, the smell of spicy orchard blossom. Escape into the great outdoors.

Packed with a programme of spectacular spring, summer, autumn and winter events and unique spectacles, we’ve got heaps of unmissable events to help you make the most of your stay here at White Sand.

A holiday at Coastguards always has something for you to do. Hardly surprising given the close association with the sea and surrounding farms, food features heavily in our major festivals in the region.
