This recently updated and redecorated, two-story stone house is set in a private wooded area just above the charming Côtes du Rhone wine village of Beaumes-de-Venise, mid-way between the famous walled city of Avignon and Vaison la Romaine, with its ancient ruins and medieval ramparts, in the northern Vaucluse. The location, within walking distance of the delightful village (with one of the best boulangeries in the region!), is perfect for guests seeking a village experience without sacrificing privacy or the tranquility of a country setting.
There are expansive views of the mountains, the valley and the village from the home's many terraces, which also provide sunny and shaded spots for dining al fresco or catching the rays of the warm Provençal sun. With three bedrooms (one furnished with a queen-size bed, the other two with two singles in each bedroom, which can be easily combined to create queen beds for couples), three full bathrooms and spacious living areas, the mas comfortably accommodates six people. A crib and high-chair are also available upon request. The main level of the house is also handicapped and wheelchair accessible.
After touring the sites, market villages and celebrated wine regions of the northern Vaucluse, guests will enjoy an invigorating swim or just cooling off in the large (33' x 13') private pool. We have spent many hours in that pool, both before and after enjoying a casual dinner prepared on the large barbecue grill and served on one of the mas' stone patios. With its woodburning fireplace in the sunny living room and air-conditioned dining/sunroom adjacent to the kitchen, the villa is comfortable at any time during the year.
This home offers that rare combination of village convenience with country privacy, modern appointments with traditional ambiance, and a central location outside the more celebrated, and thus often more crowded, tourist destinations in Provence. Beaumes-de-Venise, with shops, cafés, and restaurants, is a ten-minute walk from the house, leaving no excuse not to stroll into town for fresh croissants and baguettes at the delightful village boulangerie, or to pick up fresh produce and cheeses at the Tuesday morning market; the wonderful weekly market at nearby Bédoin is not to be missed!
Seasoned hikers and cyclists will appreciate the villa's location, close to Mt. Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail; there are also gentle bike trails and paths meandering among the ubiquitous vineyards which are perfect for family outings and picnics. Beaumes-de-Venise is world famous for its Muscat Beaumes-de-Venise, and is one of the 17 celebrated Côtes du Rhône Villages, renowned for their red, white and rosé table wines. Other Côtes du Rhône villages are within a short drive, including the celebrated vineyards of Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Sablas and Séguret. The Côtes du Ventoux wine villages and estates are within a 15-30 minute drive. The location is perfect for touring the "sites" of the northern Vaucluse, as historic Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Avignon are all within a half hour’s drive, as are the lesser-known, but incredibly charming, "perched" villages of Le Barroux and Crillon-le-Brave, which in our view rival the more famous villages of the Lubéron Valley.
The villa is also ideally located for day trips to the Lubéron, St-Rémy-de-Provence, Arles, Les Baux-de-Provence, Nîmes and the Gorges de l’Ardèche. Until we'd stayed at the villa ourselves, we had no idea how convenient this location actually is! Even the seaside villages of Cassis and Carry-le-Rouet are less than two hours from the house.
