Welcome to the Bluewater Star, our beachfront home, located in the sleepy village of Surfside Beach on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Dear Everyone: WE ARE COMPLETELY BOOKED FOR THIS SUMMER WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE WEEK (7nights) FROM 4 PM ON AUGUST 23 TO 11 AM ON AUGUST 30.
Please email me if interested in this week. The rate is $3550 including taxes and cleaning + separate $200 damage deposit. We provide bed sheets and towels at no additional charge.
Our 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath home sits in the dunes on a half-acre lot only footsteps away from the beach. Decks surround three sides of the house and each room opens up to a deck, giving everyone lots of elbow room and plenty of ocean views. A private walkway leads you from the back deck straight over the dunes to the beach.
The kitchen was designed and equipped to be appreciated by people who love to cook. Recessed lighting, granite counter tops, pendant lighting, stainless appliances, and restaurant quality cookware, bar ware and utensils are all top of the line. The owner of the house is a restaurant manager who loves to cook and he knows how to stock a kitchen with all the essentials and extras.
The kitchen and bar opens to the great room and is the focal point of our home. A soaring ceiling and two-story wall of windows gives you views of the ocean from anywhere in the house.
Across the street is a pier for crabbing, and fishing is everywhere. You can fish in the surf, in the bay, off a pier or deep sea with a charter boat. If you want someone else to catch your fish, just run over to the nearby seafood market of the local catch. If you don't feel like cooking, there are several wonderful local restaurants nearby.
Galveston, with its historic homes and local entertainment, is an easy and scenic 1/2-hour drive up the coast.
Summer is not the only time to visit the beach. Off-season offers empty beaches and cheaper lodging. If you are craving solitude and serenity, you can find it here. Only one road leads to our home so the only sounds are those found in nature - the waves, the seagulls and the pelicans. It's a place for solitary walks reconnecting with yourself and nature and loved ones. Nights are dark -no city lights around- so you will be amazed by the number of stars you are able to see.
When it's cold outside, you can put on a fire and enjoy the view of the ocean from the comfort of the couch. Relax and unwind with a good book and retreat from the world. Explore our fabulous kitchen, peruse our cookbooks and teach yourself how to make hearty dishes like cioppino, paella, stews, chilis and chowders. Recipes that take more time and patience than you usually have provide a very pleasant way to reconnect with family and friends.
Weekly rentals are 7 nights and are available year round. During the summer we only offer full week stays, but off-season, we do offer shorter stays with 3 nights being the minimum. Holidays are only offered for a full weeks stay and there is an extra charge for those stays. Prices on this site are strictly for family rental.
Weekend stays are from Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Monday. Check in is at 4 pm and checkout is 11 am. These times are sometimes flexible, depending on whether place is rented before and after you. During peak season, weekend rentals will only be available as last minute bookings.
A $200 deposit is required to reserve your dates. This is cashed upon receiving but will be refunded to you within two weeks of your stay, less any damages.
Well-behaved, short-haired dogs 40-lbs and under are accepted conditionally with prior approval and payment of $125 non-refundable fee per pet, two pets max. No puppies under a year of age please.

We have been coming to Surfside for years and we finally found the perfect house to rent thanks to the Bluewater Star. It's by far nicer than any other house there and reasonably priced. Great location on the beach too. We are coming back this summer and looking forward to it. My daughter just loved the little bedroom under the stairs. Also it has by far has so many extras in the kitchen you don't find at most rentals. The owners is wonderful to deal with and I look forward to returning to the Bluewater Star in a few months! Thanks Haney family for sharing your house!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our family of nine, with seven from up north, spent a week of togetherness and fun at The Bluewater Star during the Christmas Holiday. It was everything that the owner said...and more! Our grandchildren had a wonderful time building sandcastles every day! It was truly "a family heirloom memory for all!" And we highly recommend staying with family and/or friends for a great time away! In fact, we have already booked an additional week in the spring!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

I was part of a group of ten and we all had a great time at your house. We were able to all gather around the living/kitchen area visiting until wee hours of the night. Cooking was a delight because of all the wonderful kitchen gadgets. We were outside when possible, walking the beach, and doing nothing at all. Your place made our long weekend just perfect. Thanks for sharing.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

Barbara & Mike, just a note to say first, we had a great time staying at Bluewater Star last week. All of us (8 adults, 6 small children) loved the house and its many aspects and amenities. We arrived to find it in great condition and left it, we hope, in the same or better. Hope to do it again sometime. Photos of our grandchildren arrayed on the kid's bed in the kid-nook are priceless and reflective of the genius of that room's designer. It remained a kid destination all week long. Much the same can be said of the gazebo where you can "go down to the beach" yet always have a little shade, a place to sit, and a bit of privacy …very nice. For some of our grandkids it was their first time on the beach and into the surf and their reactions will never be forgotten. One afternoon three of us ventured into a beautifully becalmed surf to fish and we landed a few. As a bonus, for a time we were effectively "swimming with the dolphins" as a small pod periodically surfaced all around us. Personally, I spent a great deal of time on various decks (alone or with a grandchild cuddled in my lap or with a semi-silent adult) listening to the breakers and in deep, thirst-slaked contemplation of occasional pelicans, dune buggies, horseback riders, tug-barge traffic, big boats through the jetties, dolphins in the surf, shrimpers plowing the near-shore, cloud formations, sun risings and settings, or just sand and waves. It was exhausting. Although our interactions with you have been on a very amicable business level, my wife and I wish to thank you on a personal level.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Our family of 13 had a wonderful time in your fantastic beach house! There was plenty of room for all of us to sleep and play. We loved using your gourmet kitchen and grill. It was fun to enjoy the beautiful beach with soft sand. The gazebo at the end of the deck was very unique and great to enjoy at the end of the day! Thanks so much for the use of your beautiful home. We will definitely return!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The property was very much as described and truly a lovely place to spend a trip. The owners have thoughtfully provide ample linens, towels, games, and folding chairs for sitting on the beach, not to mention all the kitchen gadgets you might want or need. It was well appointed without feeling stuffy, and we certainly felt right at home and comfortable allowing the kids to play. A better marker for the driveway (my husband missed it every time we went out) and a dust buster near the back door is really my only suggestion, just to help keep some of the sand out of the house.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The description of the house was accurate. It is beautiful and comfortable. My daughter and I have just returned after a week stay. We spent Thanksgiving there with our family joining us for a couple of days at Thanksgiving. The weather was perfect and we had a wonderful time.. The house was very clean and well maintained. Barbara was very helpful with all our questions. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone. We did not want to leave and look forward to a return trip! The dogs had a good time as well.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our family just returned from a 5-night stay at the Bluewater Star. The weather and all our surroundings were just beautiful. There were eleven of us, ranging in age from 22 months to 68. Everyone had their own place to sleep, and everyone enjoyed it. We were very pleased to find an entire cupboard empty for our food stash as well as an empty refrigerator (with plenty of ice waiting for us from the icemaker). Also, each bedroom had an empty chest/dresser for our clothing. Those touches added a lot of our stay. I cannot recommend the Bluewater Star highly enough. We drove into Galveston one day to ride the ferry, but we all came back glad that we had chosen Surfside Beach for our vacation. It is very quiet, very private, and very peaceful. “Our beach,” though it has public access, was gorgeous, clean, and very private. We seldom saw anyone else, and when we did, they were just walking, running, or driving by. I echo those reviews about the gazebo. It was a wonderful place to sit and watch those on the beach on those times some of us did not choose to be on the beach ourselves. The decks around the house are also all very nice. We took a lot of beach toys for the younger kids, but had we not, there were plenty there already to keep them entertained. There are also a lot of extra plastic chairs for everyone to sit on outside as well as tables and chairs. We would love to be able to return some day. Thanks to the Haney family for sharing their lovely home with us.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The house was such a perfect place to get married for us. Other than everything being a-la-carte (which I still enjoyed, since I had such a great time planning the wedding), Barb was very accommodating on dishes and wine glasses. The house is definitely set up for great parties. We had about 65 guests show up and it was the perfect size for us. The photos turned out to be fabulous, there were not a lot of people on the beach so it felt very private. The four stars is because: The heavy clean-up afterwards: trash bags, laundry (towels and bed sheets), sweeping, trash pick up around the perimeter, etc. The extra price for weddings should have covered the basic clean-up. Don't forget to bring toilet paper, hand soap, dish detergent, laundry detergent, paper towels, etc. I understood these were all not included in the price, however, it would have been nice. Overall, it was a GREAT experience!!! A BEAUTIFUL AND FABULOUS lookin' wedding. And Barb was a pleasure to work with every step of the way. We will definitely rent it out again, and the kids really enjoyed it!Recommended for: People with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Hi Kim - thanks for your comments. As mentioned, all of the terms were discussed prior to commitment as to avoid any surprises. I would like to clarify that basic cleanup is included in our wedding rate, but it's true, we do ask that the bride and groom be responsible for clean up of their party and removal of all trash and rental items that have been brought in. Following everyone's departure a full cleaning crew arrives to make the home ready for our next guests. I apologize that we are unable to be an all-inclusive wedding destination. We simply do not have the infrastructure in place or manpower for that, however, our prices also reflect that. What we do offer is an excellent value for those who are on a budget and who do not mind doing some of the work themselves to create a setting that is just as beautiful and elegant as those all-inclusive - and significantly more expensive - wedding locales. I wish you and your husband a wonderful and long life together. Sincerely, Barbara Haney owner

About the owner: In 2006, my husband and I were nearing completion of construction on our beach home when we discovered that our beautiful baby boy, by then almost two, was autistic. Our savings and extra income intended for the beach house mortgage vaporized as we began intensive therapies for our little one. We had decided to put the house up for sale when I stumbled across the vrbo website and an idea was born. What if we could open up our home to other families who enjoy the beach as much as we do? So, overnight my husband and I became managers of our beachhome-turned-resort rental property. And what a fantastic ride these years have been. It's been a wonderful experience getting to know so many really terrific families and providing a place so they can create their own memories while allowing us to create our beach memories too. Bobby, now 9, is doing great. All these years of therapy have given us a child who can interact, has begun talking and he can now tell us that his favorite place on this earth is our beach house. We give a heartfelt thanks to all the families who have stayed at our home and extend a warm Texas hello to all the families we have yet to meet. Cheers! Bluewater Star family Barbara and Mike Haney and sons Bobby and Jack
Why the Owner Chose Surfside Beach:
As a child I was thrilled when my parents would rent a beach house in Surfside for one fun-filled fantastic week each summer. Family from out of town would join us and we'd spend our days fishing, crabbing, swimming and eating delicious things. It instilled a life-long dream to one day have a place to bring my children. My husband and I have dreamed, designed and shaped this idyllic place specifically for our children and invite you to stay so that you can create your own precious family memories.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Going to Surfside is like stepping back in time. Only one road into town and one road out and not a single skyscraper or holiday inn. Restaurants are family owned and convenience stores close down in the off season. When we go down to the house, we invite all our loved ones to join us. Our caravan of cars pulls into the driveway and everyone scatters in different directions - little ones with their mamas scoot off to the beach with shovels and pails, the older kids go crabbing or swimming, dads go fishing and those who just want to relax head off to the deck with a book for a little relaxation. Hours later everyone congregates around the dinner table to tackle platters of fresh fried fish, steamed Gulf Coast crabs and chilled shrimp. Nights are spent on the deck, listening to the surf and watching the night sky for shooting stars while fire flies blink in the dunes. At some point before bed, we'll rouse ourselves and head down to the beach, lanterns in hand, to build a bonfire in the dark. The kids love to toast marshmallows for sandy smores and once they've had their fill, we all head back to the house exhausted and happy and ready to do it all again the next day.
