Top Experience in Todi

Guest: Alan Ballard
Date of Stay: 10/09/11 Review Submitted: 12/06/11

We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment and although there are many steps in Todi but the great views are worth the effort. Typically narrow streets limit vehicle access but Carlo was very helpful; met us and took us to the apartment from the car park just outside the city wall and delivered us together with luggage to our car after the stay. There are many interesting day trips possible from Todi and a great place to relax and enjoy the Umbrian experience. No problem finding things to do in staying for a week.

Wonderful week in Todi

Todi is a marvellous medieval Umbrian hill town and staying at the La Gardenia appartment made it very special. La Gardenia is within easy walking distance from the town square's cafes, shops and historic buildings. It really is like going back in time. The appartment interior is comfortable, well equipped and has fantastic views from its balcony. Some upgrading is planned for winter 2011-12 and this would in my opinion give it a 5 star rating. It is worth while saying that La Gardenia is not for anyone with mobility difficulties and you are in a medieval building! Carlo is a wonderful host and we would not hesitate to make a return visit.

If you're looking for a relaxing and authentic Italian experience...

Than Todi is the place for you. We were looking to live like the Italians for the summer and we rented this townhouse for almost 6 weeks in the summer and can't imagine doing it any other way. Carlo was very helpful, picking us up from the Train and bus stops and was a great help. His English was very clear, although he always apologizes for his bad English. We were all impressed. There are many steps up to the apartment, but it was totally worth it once we saw the view. Sitting in bed in the master bedroom, you can look out 2 windows with perfect views of two beautiful churches. My photographs don't do justice to what we looked at every night. I travelled with a 2 year old and I never felt like we weren't safe in the town or the apartment. He even provided us with a crib for her, which was perfect. The food was beyond amazing and my toddler even ate raw vegetables daily...something we can't get her to do here in Canada. There was a little tiny ,market at the end of the street and Cinzia who runs it, was beyond helpful. If I needed something, she tried her best to help and her produce was so fresh. One day I needed fresh basil, and she was out. She told me to come back in a couple of hours, and sure enogh, I got fresh basil, picked fresh out of a garden nearby. Months later, I still miss the daily trips to get our Latte Macchiato's and gelato's and hang out at the highest point in Todi, where there is also a park. We found a public pool which was a short bus ride to the bottom of the hill (we tried to walk thinking it didn't look too far from our balcony. it was a lot further than we anticipated, but an adventure nonetheless) :) The kitchen in the apartment was small but equipped with everything we needed although, the restaurants were so good, we ended up eating out a lot. My mouth still waters for the Bruschetta and pizza. We didn't have a car, but managed to figure out the train schedule which was good for us, although if you want to take a day trip to places other than Perugia or Terni, you really need to plan to stay over night as the regional train line doesn't run past 7:00pm. A few friends of ours came throughout the 6 weeks, and we all agree, that we would go back there in a second. Carlo was amazing and the apartment was very spacious. We will definitely go back at some point, hopefully soon! Thanks Carlo for a perfect Italian vacation.

We rented this apartment in June for one week, the apartment was clean, well maintained, plenty of room and wonderful views from the balcony, perfect for that early evening drink overlooking the valley below. Carlo the owner was charming, met us at the apartment to show us around, took us to the local supermarket in his car and even carried the groceries.A very warm welcome from a lovely host. Todi is a very nice hill town with everything you need, perfect for daytrips to Assisi,Spoleto and Perugia if you have a car. Happy to recommend this property for a holiday in Umbria

Fabulous

Date of Stay: 05/05/11 Review Submitted: 06/09/11

This apartment, inside this walled town, and its idyllic surroundings comprised one of the top vacation experiences we have ever had. The two-floor apartment is clean, spacious, well layed-out, comfortable, artfully decorated, and very well stocked with towels, linen, and kitchen equipment and appliances. It is tucked within the ancient walls of this stunningly beautiful Umbrian hill town, with its lovely medieval and renaissance churches and temples, narrow hilly streets, piazzas, and fantastic views. The apartment has many windows which give the rooms a light airy atmosphere, as well as a balcony that gives you a huge unobstructed view of the valley and hills beyond, as well as of the five-domed Santa Maria della Consolazione church. The owner, Carlo, was incredibly helpful and kind, picking us up at the Ponte Rio train station down the hill, and returning us there at the end of our stay. He provided us with a lot of useful information including places and directions to grocery shop, eat (many restaurants, cafes, and pizzerias), and sites to see. The sunsets were spectacular, and the swallows magical. With the exception of an excursion to Assisi one day, we were happily content enjoying the sights, sounds, walks, and tranquility of Todi and this beautiful apartment for our week stay, and cannot wait to return!

Far exceeded our expectations in terms of the quality of the accommodation & the beauty of the area. Carlo was an excellent host & provided much helpful advice to assist us in exploring the beautiful Umbria area. Carlo's advice on purchasing local produce within Todi was also invaluable & assisted us in having many memorable meals.

Great town, apartment, view, value!

Date of Stay: 04/12/11 Review Submitted: 05/29/11

This was a wonderful vacation rental. We loved being here, being able to cook, to sit on the balcony admiring the amazing view, to read and lounge around in the pleasant and cozy rooms. Carlo was a terrific host. The information in the apartment is comprehensive and very helpful, and Carlo himself was always available to help with any problems. We ran into him on the plaza one day and he took time to walk us to some places in town we had not yet explored. He speaks excellent English (as well as some French!) and was a super guide. Groceries were near the apartment, as were a number of nice restaurants. Todi itself is a marvel. We had no car but really enjoyed walking in the town and the environs. Our only caveat: Todi itself requires the ability to walk up and down fairly steep hills (which became easy after a day or two) and the apartment is reached only by a couple of flights of stairs. We will come back to Todi and La Gardenia!

Thank you Carlo for a wonderful Italian experience. Your apartment was the perfect place to start our Umbrian adventure. It was clean, and lived up to our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the balcony with our morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine and watch the changing scenery. You were a terrific host by showing us the "ropes" as we settled in. Your recommendations for restaurants, gelato and parking places were all helpful and right on. The town of Todi was a charming medieval place to explore. Thank you also, for the book in the apartment that showed us many backroad tours to try by car or bicycle. They certainly were adventures we never would have found otherwise. Each one took us to a new village with it's own history to share. I would recommend this apartment to fellow travelers.

Views of countryside

Guest: S&C (Boston, MA, USA)
Date of Stay: 03/23/11 Review Submitted: 04/11/11

This large apartment in a stone building typical of old Todi made us feel at home despite its elegance. The double bed was firm and long enough for a 6' 3" man. The bathrooms had sturdy new fixtures, although they present the usual mysteries to American travelers in Europe. The kitchen and neighborhood stores have all that is needed for dining in on local mushrooms, fresh asparagus, huge orange-yolked eggs, and prosciutto. And Umbrian wine, of course. Carlo, our landlord, put himself out to get us oriented and even ferried us to and from public transit. The views of the rooves of Todi and the surrounding landscape from the windows and balcony make the place wonderful just to hang and look out at the changing light. --2 middle-aged Americans

Wonderful

Guest: David (United States)
Date of Stay: 12/30/10 Review Submitted: 05/28/11

In January 2011 we had the pleasure of staying at Carlo's apartment for 10 days. He met us at a nearby coffee shop, and was happy to give us a tour of Todi in our car so that we would be able to find the grocery store and other stores. That was very helpful. The apartment is in the old city so that you can't park a car at it, but it's a short walk up from the parking area, not a problem for us, but may be for someone who doesn't want to walk, but then why are you staying in an Umbrian hill town? Carlo showed us around the apartment and we were floored at how beautiful the views were. Carlo is very modest in his descriptions. The balcony overlooking the valley and surrounding houses is beyond description. It was January and we still managed to enjoy a glass of wine or cup of tea on the balcony. The apartment itself is nice, it's not a fancy hotel but very comfortable for our family. We knew we would be cooking a lot of our meals and the kitchen and dining room were perfect for this. With such comfortable surroundings and wonderful views sometimes we had to force ourselves to leave the apartment. There's also a TV in the apartment and it was amusing to see the kids watching spongebob in Italian. The weather in January can be hit or miss, and we had mostly highs in the 40's with the occasional 50. Heat is not included and we were concerned about using too much gas, so we turned down the heat at night and when we went out for the day and only averaged $10/day for the gas. Todi is an ideal location for staying somewhere central and making daytrips. We visited Norcia, Assisi, Orvieto and Pitigliano. You do need a car, but if you're coming in via train it's easy to rent one in Orvieto. The town of Todi is a beautiful hill town. If you're looking for lots of white marble and statues it might not be for you, but we enjoy the more rustic stonework and narrow winding walks of hill towns like Todi. You could walk to the stores for most groceries or hop in the car if you wanted to go to a larger grocery store. There's also a playground on the top of the hill which was great to have for our kids. Our kids are 5 and 9 and it was fun for them to climb the stairs to the top of the hill from the apartment and run down the beautiful lanes that lead to the park with the playground. It's also a great setting for children's (and adult's) imaginations as you walk the streets and alleys. All in all it was a highlight of our trip. Thanks Carlo!

Perfect Perch in Todi

Date of Stay: 05/03/10 Review Submitted: 06/08/10

My family and I stayed in this beautiful townhouse May 2010. The views from the windows and off the balcony were spectacular. The town of Todi looks like something out of a storybook. Quaint little shops, good restaurants, little grocery stores and very warm and friendly people. The town is of course on a hill but it is very walkable and safe to walk day or night. My husband and I jogged up to the "Rocca" the Rock. The trail is very close to the townhouse and reveals great views of the valley. Carlo, the owner, spoke English very well and was so helpful and charming. This place has been in his family for years and he has great stories about Todi. With his help, we visited art galleries and even attended a jazz concert. We felt like locals. It was a very unique experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. Carlo also helped our college age daughter connect to the internet which is not always easy in walled medieval city. From Todi we took many day trips. Carlo supplied us with a notebook that had many suggestions for half day or full day trips. It was very useful. We also took advantage of the well appointed kitchen. We love to cook and it was very easy to do this with all the cookware and spices that were already at the townhouse. We also loved having two bathrooms and plenty of space to spread out. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family. Ciao - Brad & Laura

Todi in Umbria holiday

Guest: David (Murray Bridge South Australia)
Date of Stay: 11/01/09 Review Submitted: 07/03/10

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the La Gardenia townhouse in Todi. The apartment was very clean and provided us with all our living and cooking needs. We were attracted to the website because of the photos and because of the balcony overlooking Todi and surrounding hills. We spent a great deal of time out there drinking and eating local fare as well as having Bocelli playing in the background. Carlo was very helpful with our e-mails and while we were there. He met us at the car park, helped us with our luggage and answered all our questions and even suggested places for us to visit. We haven't stopped raving about our stay in Todi and we recommended La Gardenia to all our friends and hopefully one day they will share the same experiences as we did. To us having is a car is essential as you can travel freely around Umbria and there are some lovely small villages to visit. We visited Spoleto, Mamorre on the weekend to see the water released into huge falls, we caught the bus into Rome for the day and we spent time just wandering around Todi. You can join the Library at the Cathedral and use the internet for free. There are many nice bars and pizza places in town too. We had a wonderful week staying at La Gardenia. You will too.

It was everything that it says about the apartment and more. We called Carlo when we got to Todi and he met us and took us to the apartment. It was spotless, very comfortable and quiet. After unloading car we went to the car park about a 5-10 minute walk at the most.Carlo speaks english and was very helpfull and goes out of his way to make sure you are ok. This was our third time to Todi in 6 years, 1st time renting an apartment. It is the best way to go. The food markets are all within walking distance. There are plenty of great restaurants in town as well as sights to see. Todi is a great place to base yourself and do day trips from. We are planning on going to Todi again next year and would highly recommend this apartment to anyone. I think you would really enjoy your stay.

Todi Townhouse

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our two-week stay in this charming medieval townhouse in Todi. The townhouse is comfortable and provides a wonderful view from its small balcony. Carlo, the landlord, is most helpful in providing recommendations concerning dining, shopping, and sightseeing in the area. Getting about town requires walking, but this is the best way to get to know a place and its people. Several wonderful restaurants are in easy walking distance. If wanting a special meal and you are wiling to travel by automobile, we recommend Trippini il Ristorante in Civitella del Lago. We plan to return to Todi and stay in this townhouse.

Exceeded Expectations

Guest: John from Berkeley (Berkeley, CA, USA)
Date of Stay: 05/23/09 Review Submitted: 06/09/10

We have rented at over a dozen apartments in Italy through VRBO, but this has got to be my favorite. It feels much more like a home than a holiday rental, still with many family heirlooms. We enjoyed our breakfast in the littler balcony, with a view of the old medieval gate (or is it roman?), several churches, various walls looping around the hill, and beyond ... the morning sun creeping over the hills and illuminating various little towns sprinkled over the countryside ... We first arrived at the apartment by car through a tangled maze of steep, one way medieval alleys, all very picturesque, with the owner on board as a guide. However we quickly found out there is a large free parking lot just outside the wall, a 5 minute walk down the steep hill. A short drive around the wall takes you to a large supermarket, however there are numerous little shops within the old town. Todi has a lot of character, and in my mind is much more interesting than some of it's more famous neighbors, like Spoleto or Orvieto. As an added bonus, we saw very few tourists, the few we saw appeared to be day visitors. The apartment was well kept up and clean; it had a lot of character, and a few quirks only added to the charm. However, this rental would not be suitable for people who do not enjoy climbing stairs or steep hills.

Great place to stay in beautiful location

Guest: Sarah and Malcolm (London, UK)
Date of Stay: 04/25/09 Review Submitted: 06/13/10

We stayed in this two floor apartment for one week in April 2009. Views of the countryside, the town and the church from the windows and the balcony are beautiful. It is in a charming and quiet medieval street towards the middle of the old town. The apartment was well equipped, comfortable and spotlessly clean - photos shown are accurate, although we think the view from the balcony is much more stunning in reality! Todi itself is lovely and has several good restaurants, food shops, cafes etc. It is also very easy to cook a full meal in the kitchen and you can comfortably sit on the balcony to eat. Carlo was extremely helpful and very welcoming, and gave us lots of information about the area. We were able to drive easily to Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto from this location. We have hired a lot of holiday apartments and this is definitely one of the nicest - we would happily stay again if we return to Todi.
