A BRIEF HISTORY OF BEYNAC

L'ancienne Poste, as you may have guessed, was originally Beynac's Post Office & the narrow cobbled street that it's on was the main road from Sarlat to Bordeaux via Bergerac, following the Dordogne river.

This magical stretch of the gently flowing Dordogne river overlooks 4 Chateaux & one of the historic sites of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) between England & France. Beynac itself rises dramatically from the valley floor & was once the home of Richard the Lionheart, who was the King of England from 1189 until 1199 when he met an untimely death in a small siege in the Limousin.

Beynac will enchant & captivate you at every turn, from its narrow medieval streets lined with soft honey coloured stone houses, shops, art galleries & restaurants to its magnificent Chateau; which is perched high on top the cliff & has majestically watched over the Dordogne valley since 1150.

You may already be familiar with Beynac from watching such films as 'Chocolat', 'Joan of Arc', 'The Musketeer' & 'Timeline'.

Stunning Chateaux & Dordogne River Views -Beynac, Near Sarlat

Year Purchased: 2003

Why the Owner Chose Sarlat-la-Canéda

We bought this house as our home and lived here for 5 years. It is an absolutely stunning 13th Century house in a stunning location on the 'Premier' row in Beynac. It enjoys sunshine all day long, being south facing, and has superb panoramic views all along the Dordogne valley. Although you are in the centre of the village with all the facilities that that brings, the house is in a quiet and tranquil location. Everything that you need or desire is right on your doorstep within walking distance, but when you come home from your shopping trips or castle visits you can close the gates and everything is serene and beautiful. You can take a cooling swim in your own private pool which has the same brilliant views along the Dordogne Valley as the rest of the house. This is a real luxury as there are very very few houses in Beynac that have these views, parking and a pool and are still an easy walk to the shops and restaurants.

Sarlat is literally right on your doorstep being only a 10 minute drive away as are most of the 'Must See' sites in the area. This area of France is a food lovers heaven, with the cobbled winding streets of Sarlat and other surrounding towns and villages converted into a large open air and covered Farmers Markets selling the freshest of local produce. You can jostle with the locals at these daily Farmer's Market for the very best of the local grown Perigordian fare, be it Truffles, local wines and liqueurs, Foie Gras, Confit de Canard or Goat's Cheese, then return to the house to enjoy a superb alfresco feast.........you can't get a better French experience than that!!

Owner's Map of Sarlat-la-Canéda

Hi, this is a photo of myself Xanthe and my husband Hamish at my cousins wedding last summer in the UK.

We moved to France nearly 10 years ago and have lived & worked in the hospitality industry in the Sarlat area since then. We ran our own small hotel and restaurant in Beynac for 6 years and are proud to tell you that we were listed in many International guide books, including Rick Steves, Alistair Sawdays and the Guide du Routard. We sold this business in the summer of 2006, and after listening to the needs of our restaurant and hotel guests we started our holiday rental home business. We now have 3 wonderful vacation rental houses in prime locations in central Sarlat & Beynac which are available to rent all year round. As we live locally, we are your first point of contact if you need help with anything, you will be able to draw on our vast local knowledge, which has been acquired over many years, to make the most of your stay in this wonderful area. You will find that each of our houses can offer you the very best in location, amenities & comfort, whether you are over looking the Dordogne river & 4 Chateaux or strolling through the Medieval streets of Sarlat.

Be assured that we are responsive to our guests needs; many of whom come back year after year & have become firm friends, they are more than happy to recommend us to their family & friends. We will offer you the best service that we possibly can to ensure that your holiday is a memorable one for all the right reasons!!

Stunning Chateaux & Dordogne River Views -Beynac, Near Sarlat
5/5

Fabulous stay in Beynac

Guest: Jean (Heber City, Utah)
Date of Stay: 10/26/11 Review Submitted: 11/30/11

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful house for seven nights and loved every minute of it. The pictures were exactly right, but seeing the house, in person, was so much better. The first night we sat outside on the patio overlooking the Dordogne River with glasses of wine and congratulated ourselves for being so smart to choose this house. The Village of Beynac with its castle, church, and restaurants, was charming, and even though we were there at the end of October, still had much to offer. We toured the surrounding areas every day in our little car, visiting caves, bastides, fois gras wholesalers (yum), eating at wonderful restaurants and finding great wines - all within an hour's drive. This was a perfect place to use as our base - and with the fully equipped kitchen, we were able to tour all day and come home to make dinner from the great food we found at the markets and look forward to returning.

Best Self Catering Experience - Ever!

Guest: Andy (Houston, Texas, USA)
Date of Stay: 11/25/09 Review Submitted: 07/03/11

I am somewhat remiss in not posting this until now (stayed in Nov 2009). I lost track of where this delightful rental lived on the internet (located in TripAdvisor originally). If you're reading this review you've already decided to go to the Dordogne - a decision I can't endorse heartily enough. L'ancienne Post is absolutely everything as described - the pictures do not do it justice. We arrived at night and when we awoke the next morning the view across the river and fields was magnificent. We have stayed in self catering accommodations in the States and in Europe and this one was the best by far. Clean, well organized, convenient parking as Xanthe described (if your car is small enough!) and Beynac is a jewel of a little village. Also close to everything you need to see in the Dordogne (including ORIGINAL cave drawings at Font de Gaume). Breakfast each morning from one of the bakeries in town and your choice of restaraunts in Beynac or nearby towns for lunch and dinner. The house itself is a delight; my only warning would be there are lots of stairs to get to the uppermost bedroom. We had a group of 7 (5 adults and 2 older children) and there was plenty of room. Just writing this review makes me miss the place! If you want a beautiful, historic home in a small village setting in the Dordogne, don't look at another property!

Owner response:How lovely to hear that you still reminisce about this beautiful house in Beynac. We are so glad that you all enjoyed the experience of staying here. I think that what makes this house stand out from other self catering rentals, apart from the obvious wonderful location & Chateaux views, is that it was our family home for 6 years and was renovated with that in mind. Very best wishes, Xanthe & Hamish

We enjoyed a wonderful week here in Beynac. Aside from enjoying the warm weather and exploring the beautiful villages, we also found some favourites to share - Les Jardins de Marquessac offered a nice walk and a great spot for lunch. A day with a very different feel was visiting Oradour-sur-Glane. It was just over a 2 hour drive but worth seeing to remember what happened in WW2. Thank you Xanthe and Hamish for a wonderful stay!

To Australians with 40,000 years of aboriginal history and 200 years of colonial history, this area fills the gap very interestingly. Great hous and location.

The information you have provided is comprehensive and greatly appreciated as well as the professional approach that evidences your experience in these matters. That is not surprising considering your beautiful holdings in Beynac, yet nonetheless reassuring.
