In addition there is a lovely weekly summer market, a Pre history Museum and stone age village & the Dordogne river all within a couple of minutes walk from the house; you can go canoeing, hot air ballooning, take bike tours (bikes can be delivered you the door with all the necessary equipment), walking tours & horse riding all in Beynac. This perfect Dordogne vacation rental house allows you to visit the nearby attractions very easily, whether it be Sarlat, Domme, Lascaux Caves, Rocamadour, the pre historic cave paintings, troglodyte houses or Bergerac, Cahors, Bordeaux & St.Emilion vineyards. There is so much to do & see within a very short drive of the house that a week is just not long enough!
This is a beautiful light & airy house in the stunning 'must visit' Medieval village of Beynac. It has a superb south facing garden with terraces & pool all overlooking 4 Chateaux & the Dordogne River. You can relax with a glass of the local Bergerac wine whilst you watch the setting sun turn the river fiery reds & the swans gracefully drift by. Marvel at the beautiful Hot Air Balloons as they float by above you, sometimes as many as twelve at once which is quite a spectacle. You can stroll through the winding cobbled streets lined with honey coloured stone houses, visit the shops & restaurants, art galleries & summer craft market, all within a 3 minute walk from the house.
After a day spent sight seeing what better way to spend a few hours than relaxing by the river in the dappled shade of a tree. You might like to go with the flow & hire a canoe, or you can even take a passenger boat trip up stream past some of the best Chateaux & Bastide villages in the Dordogne. Domme, La Roque Gageac, Sarlat, Rocamodour, Lascaux & the Font de Gaume Caves are all nearby.
'THE PERFECT DORDOGNE RENTAL - THERE REALLY IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE RIGHT HERE ON YOUR DOORSTEP WHATEVER TIME OF YEAR YOU VISIT!!!!'

HOUSE DESCRIPTION
L'ancienne Poste is a beautiful stone, 3 bed, 3 bath/shower room luxury vacation rental, parts of which date from the 13th Century!!!
The living, dining & kitchen area & all the bedrooms have panoramic views over this historical part of the Dordogne river to 4 Chateaux.
The beautiful living room is light & airy with high ceilings & windows overlooking the Dordogne to the front a& the pool to the side. There is a log burner for cosy winter nights in front of the fire, with a stack of logs ready for your use. For your added comfort we have installed British satelite televison and there is free WIFI.
The kitchen opens onto the south facing terrace, with table & chairs for sunny al fresco breakfasts & shaded evening meals with a glass of wine.
The Garden Bedroom, has an ensuite bathroom, two long & very comfortable single beds & 13th Century stone archway with French Doors opening onto the south facing garden. This room has the original stone walls which are 3 feet thick which means that the room is lovely and cool in the summer months.
The Middle Bedroom has high ceilings with a 160cm King bed & double French doors leading onto a balcony which runs the full length of the house giving simply stunning panoramic views of the castles, river and valley below; it has an ensuite shower room & ceiling fan.
The Vaulted bedroom has a 160cm King bed & a 120cm antique sleigh bed, with a beautiful vaulted beamed ceiling & ceiling fan, an ensuite shower room & panoramic views of the Dordogne river and chateaux.
For your arrival the beds will be made up with crisp white cotton bedlinen & the bathrooms will have 2 white towels & 1 pool towel per guest.
For rentals during the cooler months, in addition to the log burner in the living room there are electric radiators in each room which keep the house lovely and cozy throughout.
The main south facing garden & terraces overlook the river & Chateaux, a perfect place to sit and dream, read or sip a glass of wine. A perfect place to watch the world pass you by on the river below. To the side of the property is the private pool with sun decking & a shaded flower covered seating area. There are ample sun loungers & chairs for all our guests.
L'ancienne Poste is accessible by car and has the advantage of a private covered garage (formerly the village forge), which is a rarity in this medieval village. However, wide vehicles will not be able to access the garage, so please hire a smaller car with a maximum width of 2 metres for ease of access. Otherwise, we have 1 free parking ticket for the village car parks, the nearest of which is only a 2 minute walk away and being situated next to the river can be seen from the house. As this is a medieval village, most of the home owners, hotel guests and restaurant diners have to park in the village car parks which are safe. Additional parking tickets are available for approx. 12 euros per week.
The layout of this house is spread over four floors as it hugs the hillside. The Garden bedroom is the first/garden level, then the kitchen and living area on the next level, then the Master bedroom & then finally the Vaulted bedroom which is the fourth floor. The lower three floors all have outside access due to the nature of the village, so are in effect all ground floors!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BEYNAC
L'ancienne Poste, as you may have guessed, was originally Beynac's Post Office & the narrow cobbled street that it's on was the main road from Sarlat to Bordeaux via Bergerac, following the Dordogne river.
This magical stretch of the gently flowing Dordogne river overlooks 4 Chateaux & one of the historic sites of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) between England & France. Beynac itself rises dramatically from the valley floor & was once the home of Richard the Lionheart, who was the King of England from 1189 until 1199 when he met an untimely death in a small siege in the Limousin.
Beynac will enchant & captivate you at every turn, from its narrow medieval streets lined with soft honey coloured stone houses, shops, art galleries & restaurants to its magnificent Chateau; which is perched high on top the cliff & has majestically watched over the Dordogne valley since 1150.
You may already be familiar with Beynac from watching such films as 'Chocolat', 'Joan of Arc', 'The Musketeer' & 'Timeline'.

Fabulous stay in Beynac
Fabulous stay in Beynac

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful house for seven nights and loved every minute of it. The pictures were exactly right, but seeing the house, in person, was so much better. The first night we sat outside on the patio overlooking the Dordogne River with glasses of wine and congratulated ourselves for being so smart to choose this house. The Village of Beynac with its castle, church, and restaurants, was charming, and even though we were there at the end of October, still had much to offer. We toured the surrounding areas every day in our little car, visiting caves, bastides, fois gras wholesalers (yum), eating at wonderful restaurants and finding great wines - all within an hour's drive. This was a perfect place to use as our base - and with the fully equipped kitchen, we were able to tour all day and come home to make dinner from the great food we found at the markets and look forward to returning.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

I am somewhat remiss in not posting this until now (stayed in Nov 2009). I lost track of where this delightful rental lived on the internet (located in TripAdvisor originally). If you're reading this review you've already decided to go to the Dordogne - a decision I can't endorse heartily enough. L'ancienne Post is absolutely everything as described - the pictures do not do it justice. We arrived at night and when we awoke the next morning the view across the river and fields was magnificent. We have stayed in self catering accommodations in the States and in Europe and this one was the best by far. Clean, well organized, convenient parking as Xanthe described (if your car is small enough!) and Beynac is a jewel of a little village. Also close to everything you need to see in the Dordogne (including ORIGINAL cave drawings at Font de Gaume). Breakfast each morning from one of the bakeries in town and your choice of restaraunts in Beynac or nearby towns for lunch and dinner. The house itself is a delight; my only warning would be there are lots of stairs to get to the uppermost bedroom. We had a group of 7 (5 adults and 2 older children) and there was plenty of room. Just writing this review makes me miss the place! If you want a beautiful, historic home in a small village setting in the Dordogne, don't look at another property!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: How lovely to hear that you still reminisce about this beautiful house in Beynac. We are so glad that you all enjoyed the experience of staying here. I think that what makes this house stand out from other self catering rentals, apart from the obvious wonderful location & Chateaux views, is that it was our family home for 6 years and was renovated with that in mind. Very best wishes, Xanthe & Hamish

We enjoyed a wonderful week here in Beynac. Aside from enjoying the warm weather and exploring the beautiful villages, we also found some favourites to share - Les Jardins de Marquessac offered a nice walk and a great spot for lunch. A day with a very different feel was visiting Oradour-sur-Glane. It was just over a 2 hour drive but worth seeing to remember what happened in WW2. Thank you Xanthe and Hamish for a wonderful stay!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

To Australians with 40,000 years of aboriginal history and 200 years of colonial history, this area fills the gap very interestingly. Great hous and location.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: Hi, this is a photo of myself Xanthe and my husband Hamish at my cousins wedding in the UK. We moved to France 13 years ago and have lived & worked in the hospitality industry in the Sarlat area since then. We ran our own small hotel and restaurant in Beynac for 6 years and are proud to tell you that we were listed in many International guide books, including Rick Steves, Alistair Sawdays and the Guide du Routard. We sold this business in the summer of 2006, and after listening to the needs of our restaurant and hotel guests we started our holiday rental home business. We now have 3 wonderful vacation rental houses in prime locations in central Sarlat & Beynac which are available to rent all year round. As we live locally, we are your first point of contact if you need help with anything, you will be able to draw on our vast local knowledge, which has been acquired over many years, to make the most of your stay in this wonderful area. You will find that each of our houses can offer you the very best in location, amenities & comfort, whether you are over looking the Dordogne river & 4 Chateaux or strolling through the Medieval streets of Sarlat. Be assured that we are responsive to our guests needs; many of whom come back year after year & have become firm friends, they are more than happy to recommend us to their family & friends. We will offer you the best service that we possibly can to ensure that your holiday is a memorable one for all the right reasons!!
Why the Owner Chose Sarlat-la-Canéda:
We bought this house as our home and lived here for 5 years. It is an absolutely stunning house, parts of which date from the 13th Century, in a picture perfect location on the 'Premier' row in Beynac. It enjoys sunshine all day long, being south facing, and has superb panoramic views all along the Dordogne valley. Although you are in the centre of the village with all the facilities that that brings, the house is in a quiet and tranquil location. Everything that you need or desire is right on your doorstep within walking distance, but when you come home from your shopping trips or castle visits you can close the gates and everything is serene and beautiful. You can take a cooling swim in your own private pool which has the same brilliant views along the Dordogne Valley as the rest of the house. This is a real luxury as there are very very few houses in Beynac that have these views, parking and a pool and are still an easy walk to the shops and restaurants.
Sarlat is literally right on your doorstep being only a 10 minute drive away as are most of the 'Must See' sites in the area. This area of France is a food lovers heaven, with the cobbled winding streets of Sarlat and other surrounding towns and villages converted into a large open air and covered Farmers Markets selling the freshest of local produce. You can jostle with the locals at these daily Farmer's Market for the very best of the local grown Perigordian fare, be it Truffles, local wines and liqueurs, Foie Gras, Confit de Canard or Goat's Cheese, then return to the house to enjoy a superb alfresco feast.........you can't get a better French experience than that!!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We have never had an unhappy guest in over 6 years of offering holiday rentals in this house which amounts to nearly 300 individual reservations for this house alone.......an achievement we are very proud of :-)
