Cape Town house description

Listed for rental for the first time 7th January 2013! In a safe and secure environment, this was originally a spacious three bed three bath townhouse with large living area, views and balconies on both floors. Four years ago I converted the large double garage below into a fourth luxury bedroom suite. Two years ago I managed to buy the townhouse next door (rented out separately) and built a breathtaking 90 sq metre roof-top living space (with dining and kitchen and shower room attached) over the roofs of the two houses; it has a large outside terrace with an eight-seater table, BBQ, and sitting area (teak sofa and two large armchairs) all under awnings and the most magnificent wrap-around views of sea and mountains. The roof-top living room has frameless glass doors the whole length of one wall (15 m) which open so the whole room becomes a covered terrace offering jaw-dropping views of the sea. You may well see half a dozen whales breaching and lunging out at sea, and if you catch the sardine run you might spy hundreds of dolphins leaping from the water as they gorging themselves.

The house is one of three town houses (top floor spreading over two of them...) in a secure gated community. There are two parking spaces accessed from Clifford Road at the rear of the house.
Ground floor: entrance hall with stairs to upper levels, and a very large (40 sq m) bedroom with super kingsized bed and sofa; two stairs up to luxury bathroom (no separating door). Walk-in wardrobe and access to laundry room and store rooms.
First floor: front door from Ocean View Drive (the house is on a steep hill, so the mountain side of the house is a floor higher than the sea side of the house). Fully equipped kitchen with fridge freezer, hob, stove, dishwasher and breakfast bar, formal dining room (seats 10) and large living room with L-shaped sofa and armchairs. Satellite TV. Guest toilet. Two sets of folding doors open onto balconies which run the length of the room, offering sea views.
Bedroom floor: large master bedroom with king-size bed, dressing area (large mirrored wardrobes) and bathroom with bath, twin basins in marble worktop and separate shower cubicle; air conditioning. This bathroom is about 12 year old. Sliding patio doors to long balcony with great sea views. Main guest bedroom: large with queensize bed, Ottoman and armchair; air conditioning; patio doors to full width balcony with sea views; modern fully-tiled ensuite bathroom with shower in bath, w.c. and basin in vanity unit. Bedroom 4: smaller than the others: double bed and modern fully tiled shower room; air conditioning; mountain views.
New roof-top floor: architect designed, double the size of each other floor. Breathtaking views the moment you enter; brand new open-plan fully equipped kitchen with cooker, hob, American-style fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave etc; dining table for six; huge L-shaped sofa and three-person day bed, all facing the stunning views. The whole length of the room is frameless folding glass panels opening onto 18 m long terrace. Large white aluminium sliding shutters offer protection from afternoon sun. Further glass folding doors open onto another 30 square metre outside terrace with large dining table and lounge suite, awnings and large gas BBQ. All with the same amazing ocean views, plus wonderful views of Lion's Rump and Lion's Head (which you can climb from just behind the house: if you're man or girl enough...) There's also a brand new inside-outside luxury shower room, from which you can see the ocean and Cape Town and Cape Town can see all of you.... Unless you cop out and pull the aluminium shutters along.

Help in the guise of Anne and Fisher is provided twice a week - more by negotiation. They change your sheets, get the place gleaming, the BBQ polished, do your washing and ironing etc. Talk to them about baby-sitting etc

                  Cape Town is an amazingly open and vibrant city, squeezed between the mountains and the deeply blue but cold Atlantic Ocean. It teems with great restaurants, trendy bars, lively nightclubs and designer shops. Beautiful countryside and wine farms surround the city, and there are magnificent walks direct from my house into the mountains or down by the sea.

                  Perched on the slopes of Lion's Head, part of the Table Mountain Nature Park, the house offers magnificent panoramic views of both sea and mountains. From balconies and terraces over three floors you can see whales and dolphins in the bay, while hang gliders take off from Lion's Head just behind the house. I don't believe there are more magnificent sunsets anywhere in the world.

                  The house is close to excellent, high quality supermarkets and a host of shops and cafés on Sea Point Main Road, while the V&A Waterfront (designer shops, open air restaurants, boat trips and tremendous vibe), Cape Quarter, Green Point Stadium and the City Bowl and city centre are a few minutes away by car. Bantry Bay and Clifton with their famous beaches are also four or five minutes away, as is Camps Bay which adds a huge selection of restaurants and trendy bars to its magnificent stretches of sand.

                  You can walk from directly behind the house up into the Table Mountain Park, and from there take a host of challenging walks including the climbs of Table Mountain and Lion's Head.

                  The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with their amazing display of proteas and the wineries of Constantiare are a 15-20 minute drive away, and the wonderful countryside and wine farms of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek are easily accessible. Night life in Long Street is a thirty rand cab ride away, as are dozens of quality restaurants and bars.

                  About the owner: I was on holiday in Cape Town in 1998 and fell in love with the place - its ambience, its spectacular scenery, the amazing countryside around it (the Winelands, the Garden Route, the wild West Coast), the wonderful restaurants and bars and the great fish, meat, vegetables and wine you can buy in the supermarkets. In short, an amazing quality of life (if, of course, you are lucky enough to have some money...) In 2002 I decided to buy and after looking at dozens of properties found this one, with its generous space and awe-inspiring views. Not far fromClifton or Camps Bay and the city centre, Upper Sea Point is just perfect for me: safe, close to everything, in a vibrant part of town and with views which I never tire of looking at. I love 'improvement projects'. The first was to update the house (though it wasn't built until 1997), then create 'the garage suite', and then the opportunity came to build this magnificent room on the roof. I can sit there for hours at a time just taking in the view and being glad to be alive. Up until now (Jan 2013) I have never let the house out, though friends love to stay. It seems, though, sad that it's empty nine or ten months a year, and, frankly, I'd like it to pay for itself. So, let's give it a try. I'm now retired, so can fit in my visits to unoccupied weeks. I'm lucky enough also to own a property in the South of France, near to St Tropez, which I rented out for the first time in 2012 (HomeAway property 895374). The Cape Town house is, in my view, more spectacular, and I love it much more.

                  Why the Owner Chose Cape Town:
                  The first thing that hit me about this place was the wonderful views - from three floors and nearly all the principal rooms. The sunsets are just stunning. Sea Point is vibrant and convenient for everything I need or want. It's also safe - in 11 years I haven't had the slightest security problem - and I liked the fact of the house being one of three in a gated area. I also liked the spaciousness of the house and, especially since my improvements, you can get away from each other at times (two full living rooms, two floors of reception rooms) in a house which is safe and close to everything. If you like a modern house with modern furniture and fittings then this is a place to consider. There is no plunge pool, but plenty of room for sunbathing and there's the sea and the great Sea Point open air Pavilion swimming pool complex just down the road... There are stairs though, so not suitable for disabled. You can be almost anywhere you want to go in Cape Town in a few minutes - the Waterfront, designer shops and fabulous restaurants; Camps Bay, Clifton etc are in a comfortable walking distance (just over 30 minutes of fabulous views).

                  The Unique Benefits at this House:
                  If required, the house easily divides into two nearly self-contained units, so two families could have a large degree of privacy. It's a comfortable, secure family house, and everyone who's visited it has loved it! From three floors you see the most amazing view -often spot whales in the bay; to sit on a sofa on the roof terrace drinking a cocktail as the sun goes down over the sea and the whole sky goes on fire is a remarkable experience.
