A Trip to the Middle Ages with the Comforts of the 21st Century

Guest: Rebecca (Massachusetts USA)

Our experience in Beynac at La Petite Maison was truly outstanding and unforgettable. We knew it would be from the moment the town came into view from the road leading up to it. Since every traveler's experience is replete with idiosyncrasies, however, it might be worthwhile to describe a little about our particular experience. Not being terribly familiar with the French rail system apart from the TGV, we had some anxiety about booking the tickets online, getting to Gare d'Austerlitz from CDG, arriving in Brive before the Avis office closed (a narrow window) and what would happen if we arrived in Beynac after 7:00 pm. The taxi from CDG ended up costing only 54 euros, which is very good I think, but that advantage was offset by a three-hour wait for the 1:13 train. No problem picking up the rental car, but we were surprised that a GPS did not come with it. Fortunately, the owner's directions were straightforward, so once out of Brive via a rather inelegant route, we were able to stay on a road that at least got us there within 1.5 hours. When we reached Beynac, everything seemed closed, our iPhones would not work (due to a glitch later fixed) and we were just starting to feel a little desperate when two lovely people approached us to ask if we were perhaps the renters of LPM. One of them was Martine, the housekeeper, with whom we immediately had a cheery conversation in French and were delighted to be understood and so quickly immersed in the culture we love from afar. The house is beautiful and tastefully decorated in every detail and lacking in no amenity that anyone could possibly need to be happy in such a town. Being history buffs, we loved rambling up to the chateau and back several times throughout the week, and reading about it in our guides. The market in St. Cyprien was outstanding, with the best zucchini on the planet, olives, local mustard, truffle pasta, etc., to name a few of our finds. Two meals at La Petite Tonnelle, of course superb, also. The river level was too high for canoeing, but all the rain has left the countryside unbelievably verdant and lush, a reasonable trade-off. A day trip to Perigueux's Vielle Ville included many interesting shops, a cathedral and museum. Despite dire weather forecasts, the so-called bad weather was limited to brief scattered showers, leaving us with abundant sunshine. The Perigord Noir is perhaps the most beautiful and magical part of France. Don't miss it.

Wonderful experience enjoyed by 2 Australian mature couples.

This cottage was perfect in every way during our recent visit to the beautiful Dordogne region of France. Our experience of both the cottage, it's facilities and comfort level, together with the surrounding village and countryside was more than we could have ever imagined.., better in the flesh than what was seen on the website and that was pretty amazing..., it caught our eye instantly when browsing the web for somewhere to stay. Local agent and cleaner were both extremely helpful as was the owner of the cottage in the long leadup to our visit as we arranged booking and asked for information about the area. The website and information sent to us before our holiday was excellent and accurate. Although there is plenty do do in Beynac we visited all the neighboring villages over the week, highlights being St Cyprien market on Sunday, Domme market Thursday, Castelnaud and the castle perched on the cliffs above Beynac. Local food is from heaven.., La Petite Tonnelle restaurant just a few doors from the cottage was fantastic. Would not hesitate to return one day...., very soon we hope.

In a word it was magnificent. Our stay at your home was magical. The location, the pace of life, the people and your home were so much more than we ever expected. And Martine was a gem. It seemed that wherever we went in town, there was Martine – too funny. We tried out many of your restaurant recommendations and were never disappointed. La Petite Tonnelle and our favorite La Belle Etoile were special. Just being able to walk and in a few minutes get some croissants or a baguette or a fabulous pastry – what a life. The only disappointment, was, that for our second week in France we rented an apartment in Paris . The warmth and friendliness that we got from your home and the entire Beynac area was missing in Paris . Although we had fun there too, it just didn’t have the same atmosphere, charm, friendliness. We even suggested in their comments that they need to check out your approach – you could really teach them so much about making guests feel welcome and comfortable. We will highly recommend your home to anyone that asks about our trip. The couple with whom we traveled had exactly the same experience.

Our Medieval experience

Our week in Beynac was made even more enjoyable by staying in La Petite Maison. The owners put a good deal of thought and care to make it charming and comfortable and we felt at home the minute we arrived. We loved being the occupants of the house that many tourists photographed. We walked everywhere and enjoyed the local shops and restaurants. What is not to love about a medieval town with a chateau on every hilltop? The scenic beauty of the area along with boating on the Dordogne, hot air baloons rides and so much to explore within a reasonable distance make Beynac a perfect vacation spot.

Absolutely Charming Cottage in Outstanding Village

La Petite Maison could not have been more perfect for our family's week in southwest France. The cottage itself is meticulous and perfectly appointed. Beynac as a home base was completely ideal. An idyllic walk out the front door leads to multiple fine restaurants, darling shops, beautiful vistas, and an ancient castle! The Dordogne River Valley is an exceptional place to spend a week. There are countless day trips within a 30-minute radius, ranging from quaint medieval villages to prehistoric cave art, plus loads of local markets and wonderful outdoor activities. We have only the highest praise for the accommodations!

The perfect vacation home in a beautiful medieval village

Guest: DDSG (Tallahassee)
Date of Stay: 06/11/11 Review Submitted: 07/31/11

My wife and I have always wanted to experience the life in a small village in France. Every year as we follow the Tour de France, we see one beautiful village after another. Which one to visit?? We heard so much about the Perigord region famous for its medieval castles and of course for the beautiful Dordogne river that graces it. After much research we decided on the village of Beynac. Why Beynac? Actually, we were not familiar with this quaint charming village until our search for a gite in the Perigord region lead us to what would be our home for a week – La Petite Maison. The pictures and description of the property drew us in and captured us. This was the place! Our party of five found a perfect little house that had all the comfort and amenities of home. This tri-level 500 year old structure offered privacy with a private bedroom/bathhroom downstairs, living room/kitchen at street level and a very large bedroom/batroom upstairs where our daughter and our two grand-daughters staid. Beynac has many steep cobblestoned streets and alleys but La Petite Maison is conveniently located close to the main street of Baynac and its restaurants, bakery, shops, post office and ATM. For those who want to avoid steep climbs it is ideally situated. We also want to acknowledge that the proprietor was very accommodating and helpful in handling the reservations and facilitating the financial aspect of the transaction. The orientation guide he provided ahead of time was excellent.. We want to also single out the wonderful reception we received from our Hostess while in Beynac. She was extremely helpful and “sympathique”!

Date of Stay: 05/28/11 Review Submitted: 06/08/11

My husband and sister and I stayed for a week in May 2011. We were very comfortable, the thick walls kept us cool, and unlike a number of other hotels/inns we had stayed at in France, there were fans (two!) in each bedroom. The kitchen was well-equipped, and we saved a fortune in money and calories by buying food at the outdoor markets and the local grocery and breadshop and fixing simple meals for the most part. The location was perfect, off the main street and its noise but close to businesses and the castle. No problem using the free lot up the street, though my sister who has some health issues would have preferred closer parking (which we could have used had we paid). The directions and tips sent ahead of time and the information booklet at the rental were excellent. We all enjoyed the prehistoric cave art and museum, the surrounding castles (no lack of those in the area!), the Marquessaque gardens, canoeing, and Rick enjoyed biking in the area. We would definitely stay here again.

Dear Vincent and Michelle, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you both for sharing your beautiful house in your beautiful village with myself and my family. We had a fantastic time on our recent holiday in France and that was thanks greatly to the time we spent at La Petite Maison. The house was so welcoming and comfortable and the people in the village so warm and friendly that we felt like we were part of the community and since our arrival home have missed it greatly. Thank you Vincent and Michelle for creating a home in a village that epitomises the warmth of rural France. Regards Shirley Douglas Beechworth Australia

This was our third time renting this wonderful house. We keep coming back not only because we are in love with the area, but because we always feel so welcome at Petite Maison. Down to the last detail, the owners' concern for our experience makes all the difference. We also enjoy the many comforts you wouldn't expect in an old house - great showers with piping hot water, wi-fi, and a nice kitchen where we can cook real French food :) On this latest visit, we brought our 6-year-old daughter and her grandparents. We were very comfortable and had a wonderful time. Some recommendations - if you visit in the colder months, take advantage of the owners' contacts to buy firewood at a much more reasonable price than you'd find in stores. Also walk through the middle of the village towards the bakery at least once. It's a breathtaking walk and a breathtaking view! After you've done it once, it's ok to "cheat" and take the flat path by the hotel :) I cannot recommend this house enough. We just got back but are already dreaming about our next visit!

Perfect week at Petite Maison in the village of Beynac

Date of Stay: 10/02/10 Review Submitted: 10/24/10

We spent three weeks in France to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. One week was at Petite Maison in Beynac. It was a wonderful stay. The accommodations were as described. We took full advantage of the well stocked kitchen. We did not eat out at all. Instead, we went to the area markets and bought the local specialties and took them back to our cottage and cooked some memorable meals. Not speaking or understanding French we enjoyed the movie selection. Even though daily temperatures were in the high 70s F. My husband had a fire in the fireplace a couple of nights. We moved from the Boston area to Florida years ago and he misses his fireplace. It did make a very romantic setting even more so. The weather could not have been better. We did a canoe trip on The Dordogne River. Walked Jardins de Marqueyssac, just beautiful. Of course The castles of Beynac and Castlenaud were must sees. We would go back in a heartbeat! A beautiful property in the Dordogne

Guest: Frank O'Phile (Victoria, BC, Canada)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 10/07/10

The listing description was accurate regarding the location--the town of Beynac and the Dordogne area are beautiful. Photos accurately reflect this property--we chose this property largely on the photos and were not disappointed. The property was exceptionally well maintained. The owner was great to deal with from the start of the process right to the very end. We had prompt replies to our questions, detailed information on getting to the property and a very useful handbook at the property on things to do in Beynac and the surrounding area. Our favourites: 1. The two homes, La Petite Maison and Mont Joie are beautifully period-decorated and the views from Mont Joie are awesome. Both homes were comfortable and welcoming to return to each evening. We loved the library, both film and book. The orientation booklet was invaluable. We also viewed the suggested films that portrayed views and castles in the area. The homes were really well equipped; virtually everything that we wanted to use was there, the microwave, dishwasher, TV, WiFi , washer and dryer, and dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, etc. Being part of an authentic local neighbourhood was a bonus; we were a bit afraid that we would be surrounded by tourists, but such was not the case. We were able to chat daily with the woman in the wine store and with the proprietor of La Petite Tonnelle. 2. Food-The food at La Petite Tonnelle is delicious. We also thoroughly enjoyed Le Grand Bleu in Sarlet for dinner and passed a lovely afternoon near Domme at the ferme-auberge, La Borie Blanche, however, it was good to have a French speaker at the table at La Borie Blanche. La Récréation in Les Arques was amazing. 3. Activities/Visits We loved the town of Les Eyzies and the National Museum of Pre-history, as well as the cave paintings in nearby Font de Gaume. Paddling down the Dordogne was a highlight, with a ride on the motorized Gabarres a less strenuous option. Domme was pretty, with that incredible view from the Terrasse, and we loved the shopping and market. St Cyprien market was huge and very good. The 'plus beaux villages de France' were great; we particularly enjoyed Carrenac, Autoine, the Chateau de Montal and Chateau de Castelnau. The castles of Beynac and Castlenaud were interesting, as were the nearby Jardins de Marqueyssac. Don't miss: St Cirq-La Popie, Peche Merle, Rocamadour, Roque Gageac or Sarlat.

An enchanting setting and a wonderful old house beautifully restored and maintained. This couldn't have been a better choice for two couples - 2 separate bedrooms each with its own bath. Fairytale location below the medieval chateau and just above the Dordogne River. Lots of chateaus for sightseeing, kayaking, hiking. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

A Dream Come True

A picture perfect house in a storybook little village, La Petite Maison is a dream come true. We simply loved the little terrasse where we enjoyed some "picnics" and wine in the late afternoons. We fell in love with the beautifully appointed downstairs bedroom and bath with stone walls, wood beams and shower cabin. The owner's suggestions and instructions were so helpful that they really helped to make our stay a success. We took him up on practically all of his restaurant recommendations and they were all wonderful. La Petite Maison makes a charming home base while exploring the Dordogne.

Great accommodation, splendid location

Date of Stay: 05/01/10 Review Submitted: 05/22/10

"La Petite Maison" gives slightly the wrong impression of this charming house. The living area and kitchen are on the ground floor as you enter through the front door. The kitchen is compact, but well equipped with all the kit you need to prepare a four course meal with the lovely local ingredients. The sitting/dining room is perfectly large enough for four adults to spread out, with a log-burning stove for extra comfort in the winter. There's a nice collection of travel books and DVDs, though we were not too inclined to watch TV with so many other things to do. The main advantage of the house as holiday accommodation for two couples is the arrangement of the bedrooms. This is where the adjective "petite" is wholly inappropriate. Both bedrooms are really large by European standards, nicely equipped and with their own bathrooms, with good quality power showers. One is below and the other above the living area, so there is good privacy for both couples. The house is attractively furnished and generally well equipped. Support is excellent. Christoph, who is proprietor of the hotel a stone's throw away, looks after you very well and should be rewarded by eating in his hotel and visiting his bar! France Telecom were in no response mode the week we were in Beynac - much of the town was completely without phones and internet. But Christoph was connected and because I was in need of regular email contact he welcomed me twice a day to use his systems. A really delightful and helpful guy. One of his assistants also helped us up the hill with our luggage. We are regular visitors to France, and I have to say that this was one of the most successful holidays we have had there. Beynac is a delightful mediaeval village, oozing history and charm. The castle is well worth a visit, splendidly and sympathetically restored. Make sure you buy the excellent laminated guide when you get your tickets. There are many local restaurants you stroll to, none worthy of a Michelin rosette, but all selling good local fare. We also visited surrounding villages and historic buildings and gardens. 7 days was nowhere near long enough and we plan to return next year. It would be remiss to close without mentioning the good experience we had with Vince. He is a thoughtful and helpful "host". His literature is comprehensive and he is generous with his time and starter pack. We have no problem in giving the overall experience five out of five!

After a 6 hour drive from Paris, my wife and I were very pleasanty received by Cristoph, the local manager of La Petite Maison. Upon entering the charming home in the middle of the village, we felt immediatley at home and comfortable by the care and thoughtfulness of the owners. The furnature and furnishngs were first class, and I especially enjoyed sitting in a reading chair by the window each morning, reading and listening to the village come alive. Each bedroom was large (and nice enough) to be the master bedroom. We choose the upstairs bedroom for the views and soft breezes from the open windows. The fresh food in the basket was on the table when we arrived...a very nice touch after the long drive. I could not pick a better location to stay when visiting the Dordogne region. Don't miss the Beynac castle, it was my favorite in the entire area!

My two week stay at Le Petite Maison was increadible! The house was immaculate, comfortable, and convenient, not to mention BEAUTIFUL. There are many tourists that walk by this house on the way up to the castle, and I could see the envy in their eyes whenever I walked out of the house, that I was staying there. The village truely is like a fairy tail, and the food of the region to dye for, I will be back!

We had a wonderful time at La Petit Maison in Beynac. The house is beautiful and well situated to explore the Dordogne. Beynac village is lovely, complete with chateau and a position along the Dordogne river. Inside we found everything we needed for our family of four. Tow spacious bedrooms with en suite baths, a fully stocked kitchen, and salon with TV and DVD for the kids (and for Dad to watch the Tour de France!). A generous welcome basket of goodies was a thoughtful touch as well. We would highly recommend this house, and hope to return soon.

We loved our week at la Petite Maison in early September 2008. The day we arrived the outdoor temperature was hot, maybe close to 90, but the thick walls, tile roof and wooden shutters were very effective to keep a comfortable temperature inside the house...nights were cool so that was an opportunity to cool the house even further by opening windows. The situation was perfect.. up the hill a little so as to be quiet and even moreso at night (could not see or hear the road), but still a very easy walk to and from the parking lot (2 minutes). Restaurants, pharmacie, bakery were just steps away, but around a corner so not in view when at the house. The view from the bedroom window of the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The house is extremely well-equipped--kitchen items, books, videos, hair dryers (2), washer/dryer (tucked in a closet) bedding, towels (not face washcloths as these are not typical in Europe--we brought our own). There is even a little place by the door to hang your keys. The town of Beynac itself couldn't be more of a fairy tale vision. The beautiful golden stone literally glowed in the late day sun. Beynac is also a perfect location as a home base to venture out to other close places in the Perigord Noir. Sarlat, Monpazier, la Roque Gageac, St. Cyprien and other places with Chateaux you can tour... Castelnaud, Les Milandes (where Josephine Baker lived), Puymartin, Domme. Oh and must specially mention the shower cabinets in the bathrooms. I had never seen those before, but they are really great...it keeps the steam from getting out and heating the room. I imagine in cooler months, it keeps the cold from getting in! I'm not sure how, but this house has plenty of hot water and great water pressure. I also most appreciate Vincent and Michelle's (owners) website which is very informative with tips on things to do. The guide in the house as well as the orientation guide emailed in advance make for a completely stress-free time as it explains many aspects of the house and area (for those of us who are planners and organizers!) We have studied German and Spanish (in addition to native English) so really didn't have any French speaking skills...but we had absolutely no trouble by memorizing several key phrases--please, thank you, sorry I don't speak french, how much, can you speak English, and of course, wine, red wine, white wine, and wine of the region. Speaking of which, you must get some foie gras or duck/goo

We immensely enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. The house is clean, quiet, well-equipped and convenient to the town without being on the main road.It is close in proximity to the hotel, the pharmacy, restaurants, and town offices, but off of the main thoroughfares enough to be quiet. We appreciated it's proximity to the bakery and the wine shop!Beynac is a beautiful, storybook French village with old stone buildings and fantastic views of the river valley below. The Dordogne River itself is lovely and peaceful with loads of boating, canoeing, and kayaking. We were even privy to some hot air ballooning and some musical concerts in the town square. Market day in Sarlat is not to be missed and daily excursions to other picturesque river towns are a must. The house was a wonderful base for daytrips or a quiet place to rest when one wanted to spend a quiet day at home.Truly a fantastic property!

Speaking of which, you must get some foie gras or duck/goose pate, put it on some lettuce from a local market, get some bread, cheese, and eat these with a bottle of Monbazillac (sweet white regional wine). Our friends who live near Toulouse said this is traditional... to this we also added some of the local sausages.mm mm! Now back home for a few days, we are on duck/foie gras detox now :-) ... and we are pining away for the regional wines. The Dordogne is a magical place! Thanks again to Vincent and Michelle.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Petite Maison. We don't think we left a stone unturned. We shopped a different market every day, took day trips to: Font de Gaume, Goffrey de Padriac, Jardin d' Eyrignac, Monpazier to the west and as far as St Cere to the east.We had a glorious evening ballon ride. We enjoyed your porch each evening with a bottle of wine and great regional food. The Dordogne area is certainly one of our most memorable visit to France. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy your lovely home.

My husband and I celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary while staying in this romantic little cottage! It was heaven. The house is so pretty and well maintained that many people stopped and took pictures as they walked by. The town is beautiful, with lots to see and the people friendly. There are many places to visit near by, so it is the perfect base to tour the Dordogne area. The owners made us feel so welcome, and their local representatives were great! We highly recommend La Petite Maison to anyone who wants a clean, well maintained, beautiful place to stay in the Dordogne area.

La Petite Maison is such a great place. My family of 5 stayed there to enjoy the wonderful Beynac. We thoroughly enjoyed this cottage and really appreciated the details w/ videos, plastic cups, plates, etc. for our little ones and brand new plates, glasses, kitchen gadgets, etc. for us. I can't wait until my next visit!

We spent a lovely week in this delightful cottage in Beynac. The Dordogne is beautiful, and the people and food were fabulous. But some of our favorite times were sitting on the tiny patio of the cottage, sipping wine, eating bread and cheese and chatting with the tourists passing by. And if you enjoy cooking, the small kitchen is well stocked for making your own great food!

We had a great holiday in France - Beynac was definitely the highlight particularly for the kids with bikes and canoes. It wasn't quite the quiet town that I was hoping but it was still great fun.As you walk around the villages in this region you will find yourself taking photos of your family against the backdrop of these beautiful medieval style homes. Suddenly, you will find yourself in one of these houses with tourists taking photos of it outside with their families – but it never put us off and it was quite a novelty and there was still sufficient privacy. The accommodation was comfortable (family of 4) and very convenient with plenty to do in the area for active and inquisitive kids.

We enjoyed Beynac and the surrounding area. What a beautiful part of the world! Your little cottage was the perfect place to absorb the atmosphere of the medieval village, everything was fine and it was a very relaxing place to unwind after a hectic day out!! It also provided us with the oppurtunity to buy and prepare food from the wonderful local markets-- something special!! Your information was a great help and very much appreciated. Once again, many thanks Cathy

Our family of five had a wonderful stay in La Petite Maison. The very clean, well-furnished cottage was filled with thoughtful touches to make our stay pleasant. We loved the location of the cottage in the village and were able to explore the many sights in the Dordogne region. We highly recommend La Petite Maison, and can't wait to return.

Our time in Beynac was clearly a highlight in a memorable trip to Europe. We saw as much as we could from: the castle where Richard the Lionheart was Baron for 10 years; canoeing down the Dordogne; visits to lovely medieval towns; pre-historic wall paintings; the market at Monpazier and so on. The stay in your charming medieval cottage (with its very pleasant modern amenities) greatly enhanced the experience. My wife and I had no idea how beautiful this region is - and what a rich variety of experiences it has to offer the visitor. Thanks again for your very helpful advice regarding hire cars and local booking arrangements. Also Christophe and staff at the hotel did a great job in coordinating local arrangements - in addition to their marvelous 4 course meals.

Beynac is idealic as it combines a working medieval village with a magnificent location. The French say that a genie flew over France with a sack full of castles but a hole developed over Dordogne and all the castles fell out. From the village you can see 5 castles. We left our car in the car park for most of the time as there is plenty to do in this valley without it. The cottage is very comfortable but also gives the true feeling of being in a medieval village.

This area is certainly one of the most picturesque and beautiful parts of France. You feel as if you have stepped back in time into a fairy tale world. The accommodations are modernly convenient and yet have all the charm and delight that added to our vacation experience. The house has a story book feel and was a great bargain for this area. It's right in the middle of the village and conveniently located to see the surrounding areas. Loved it! Loved it!

I had a wonderful stay at the cottage in May. The accommodations were so charming and comfortable. It is right up the street from several fun shops, and within walking distance of the castle and river. This area of France is gorgeous and there is so much to do within short distances. I highly recommend it.
