Welcome to Ko Olina, Place of Joy. The name says it all. Conveniently located in the heart of the Puna district. This is a very clean and comfortable home to enjoy your vacation in. It makes a great base camp to explore all the wonders of East Hawaii. The home is one block off the ocean and has ocean views, along with the sounds and smells of the ocean. It is a block away from a great park along the beautiful cliffs of the Puna coastline. This is a great place to look for whales and green sea turtles. This is also a popular place to fish or have a leisurely picnic.
The rental is the entire top floor and commands views of the ocean from several rooms. It has a huge lanai that is the heart and soul of the house. Here you can relax and hang out and it's a great place to have your dinner while you are enjoying the near constant trade winds that are the Puna District's air-conditioning. The home is nicely landscaped and you can't stay here without feeling relaxed and at peace.
Ko Olina is in the historic town of Pahoa. It has some excellent restaurants, and the ambiance of Old Hawaii, including some surviving wooden sidewalks. It is a funky laid back town that reminds one of the hippie days of the 1960's. It even boasts a free olympic size swimming pool for all to use.
You are also close to one of the most beautiful stretches of highway on the island. Highway 137, referred to as the Red Road. It is Old Hawaii at it's best, boasting some of the best snorkeling in the state at the Waipaeo Tide Pools and great soaking at the Hot Pond where you can swim in thermally heated ocean water in a beautiful park setting. MacKensie State Park is breathtaking and one of the best ocean parks for fishing. Some of the best surfing on this side of the island is done next to Isaac Hale Beach Park.
Hilo is about a 35 minute drive away with all of it's unique history and charm. It is the commercial center of East Hawaii so you will find all of the amenities of any major city, including; live theater, music, wonderful restaurants and a true spirit of Aloha. Be sure to check out the Hilo Farmer's Market on Wednesday's and Saturday's. The parks in Hilo are the jewels of the town including several beaches.
Volcanoes National Park is about an hours drive and shouldn't be missed. Take a hike at night to see the glow of lava going into the ocean or take a short time through a lava tube. The Lush forests filled with huge tree ferns and native hawaiian trees are magnificent. Take time to hike down into one of the craters and see all the life that is emerging from the lava flows. |
