Date of Stay: 04/28/12 Review Submitted: 05/12/12

After spending the first week of our holiday in the lush, tropical Puna District, driving down to the Hula Hut at Miloli'i was a wonderful and exciting contrast. The landscape formed by ancient and not-so-ancient volcanic flows is spectacular. The house is in a great location overlooking the black, craggy lava and blue ocean and you can watch magic sunsets - often a vivid orange due to the intermittent "vog" - from the huge lanai. Brightly coloured Saffron Finches visited us as we had our al fresco breakfast and vivid green geckos "chirped" under the eaves at dusk . We were too late in the season for whales, but did the enjoy the most amazing snorkelling and peaceful swims at nearby Honomalino Bay.The house is extremely comfortable and well appointed with a fun sense of Hawaiiana in every room. There were all sorts of useful items in the downstairs laundry; flippers, reef shoes, beach umbrella etc. If you feel like doing your own cooking, pick up ingredients such as ginger and cilantro at one of the farmers markets in the area and then ask around your neighbours to see if anyone has fish for sale. You'll look out from the lanai of the Hula Hut and see locals catching Ono and Ahi every morning! We would recommend the Hula Hut and Miloli'i in general for anyone who is after a quiet, non-touristy, holiday in a unique location.

This place is more than we had hoped for.Thank youfor allowing us to stay here. The porch is awesome, house is situated wonderfully. We hope that in the future we would really like to come back here. The north&east part of the island is awesome, but we like the remote southwest part for it's peacefulnes, the waves at night.INCREDIBLE!

We stayed at the Hula Hut for 6 glorious weeks over the Holidays and the location is superb.Across the street from the coastline with unobstructed ocean views. The house was generously stocked with most anything you would need. Huge lanai for watching a different sunset every afternoon and hopefully whales next year.Friendly community (just don't speed) . Melanie was very responsive to all our needs. Cable and Wi-Fi .Very quite which I loved and the winter waves crashing was very entertaining. Thanks Melanie we look forward to our next visit Ron and Donna

A great place

A really nice place. Melanie, the owner, is very responsive and returns your call or email straightaway. The house is well set-up. We hiked to Honomalino Beach. We drove the South Point Rd. Ate in Na'alehu at Shaka's. The last two days, the surf was up and the house is so close to the sea that the spray went up over 100 feet--really impressive. Whales were seen and heard. The thread count on the sheets was the best we've seen. We'd stay there again. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place; don't think tourists come down here much. Thanks, Melanie! We had a great time. The waves were huge, sunsets beautiful, black sand beaches were gorgeous, the volcano was awesome and your place was comfortable and convenient to the southern part of the island. The long drive up to the highway wasn't so bad, we just took our time and were fine.

Very Comfortable & Quite

We are finishing up our stay at the "Hut." Our honeymoon! We have had a great stay here! Melanie was very nice in answering our questions, sending us instructions, and any information that would help our stay here be more enjoyable. The "Hut" is a quiet place in a local beach community. The landscape is old lava flows, which was different. The driving up & down the Kona coast is a slow one with lots of curves & hills, so plan your travel accordingly. The first turn off of HWY 11 is just past mm 89 (from North.) To get to the "Hut" it is 4 miles of steep, sharp, curves, but once you arrive the peace and serenity is really something. We saw sunsets almost every night over the ocean, the view is really beautiful. Make sure you get groceries (Safeway), fill out a Safeway membership (free) and you will save, save, save $$$$ on your purchase. Living in the "Hut" was very comfortable! There are a few mosiquetos that hang around but the right repellant keeps them at bay. Sleeping, very comfortable, no A/C but all windows open and ceiling fans running made for comfortable temperatures inside. We would recommend this place because of price, location, and space. Melanie T has a nice place here for everyone to enjoy.

Great getaway

Guest: DRoberts (South Portland, ME)
Date of Stay: 04/14/10 Review Submitted: 05/06/10

This is a wonderful getaway, exactly as described by Melanie. Honomolino Beach a must-visit: we spent 2 whole days there and could have easily gone back for more snorkeling and playing in the sand. Our 7 year old daughter managed to lock us out of the twin bedroom, so we can confirm that Melanie is very responsive and helpful to any concerns! Note that "leisurely drive" means that this is far removed from the main towns and tourist attractions: you will spend a lot of time driving if you intend to explore those areas on most days. However, if you stop at a grocery store to get supplies on your way in from the airport, you will discover that you have arrived at paradise.

The cottage was great. We saw whales in papa bay - including one which came in close and was slapping it's tail. Great experience. We snorkeled there and at the "salt and pepper" beach to the south (which was the nicest beach we've seen anywhere). It was a great week. We loved the place. Can't wait to do it again. Beautiful home in an unexpected location. Don't let the drive down the winding road scare you. The home is wonderful and very clean. Supplied with just about everything you need to have a great vacation. Go to sleep every night to the sound of waves crashing on the 20 foot lava walls a few steps away. Walk to the end of Kai Ave and discover the beauty of the various lava formations and tide pools. Sun on the coral sand near a large pool that you can wade in. Next to that is another pool with a blow hole that is refreshing and fun. Honomolino beach is a 15 minute walk from the village of Miloli'i and worth the walk. Dine at the Desert Rose Cafe driving south about 10 miles on hwy 11, the food is excellent. You can stock up on groceries at the market right next door to the restaurant. Don't miss the Big Horn Steer, the zebra and bison on the way to the Desert Rose. You will love your stay at the Hula Hut but be warned, it's far away from touristy things. My wife Janet and I loved our stay on the Big Island. We snorkeled, we hiked, we enjoyed the beautiful island, and we did lots of sight seeing. Two-Step, which is by the Place of Refuge. Two-Step offered the best snorkeling, but the snorkeling at Honomalino Beach, was also very nice. We saw whales from the Hula Hut's lani and heard the whales blowing at night. In fact, we saw whales at many different places on the island. We visited Volcano National Park and did some hiking there, around Crater Road, the Lava Tubes, and the Petroglyths. We also visited lots of Coffee farms. The coffee farm that is just south of Milolii proved to be the best buy on the island. And, the coffee is superb. We made a number of trip to Puuhonua o Honaunau(the Place of Refuge) and to Puukohala Heiau. Both sites have been well restored by the National Parks and were very enjoyable to walk around. The Place of Refuge, however, proved to be one of our favorites. It's hard to beat all the activities that are there, the beautiful park, the incredible tidepools, and the wonderful snorkeling. It was always nice to "come home" to the Hula Hut. Your place is very roomy. The solitude and the quiet were good for the soul. The sound of the waves and the sea breezes were both very soothing. We most definitely enjoyed our 3 weeks at the Hula Hut. We will most certainly consider vacationing at your place in the future. February, Minnesota

My husband and I just returned from the Big Island and our stay in Milolii at the Hula Hut. It was one of the most relaxing vacations that we have had. Many evenings we sat on the lanai with cocktails and watched the whales and the beautiful sunsets. The home is new and very clean. The owner was also very helpful with suggestions on places to go and things to do. I would recommend this house to anyone who wants to get away from it all......

Thank you for the use of your lovely house. We had a wonderful time and yes we did see whales from the deck, we saw them from our first day there. The house was absolutely perfect, so much so that we hardly moved from it during our first week as everything we needed was right there - peace, snorkelling, lovely view and so very comfortable. Your instructions and directions were perfect, We fell in love with Tiki Hut as soon as we walked in, and waking up the next morning was amazing as we didn't even have to raise our heads from the pillows to admire the sea view. Your photos don't do the house justice, it's wonderful, and so beautifully clean and tidy. We had a lovely holiday, going to the volcano, whale watching, exploring, just being on the island is something very special. And thank you for helping to make it so good. December, UK

Aloha Melanie, We did enjoy the stay at the Hula Hut. The house is well built and the craftsmanship is very good. The Lani is especially nice since it catches the breeze off the water. The Island is REALLY BIG!! We put 1500+ miles on a rental car while we were there, enjoyed the volcanoes, gathered several avocados from along the road going down to milolii beach. Thank you for allowing us to stay in the Hula Hut. November, Oregon.
