La Croce, built in 1693, is set in unspoiled countryside in the small hamlet of Chiocchio, thirty minutes from Florence, one hour from Siena, ten minutes from Greve in Chianti.
The farmhouse is surrounded by vineyards with views to the hillsides of Fiesole. There are 50 olive trees on the property with harvest in late November. In restoring the house, we have kept as much of the original design as possible. In the 17th century, farmhouses were built to house the working families of farmers who tended the vineyards, plowed the land and planted crops. The animals were kept in stalls on the ground floor level.
Large, ground floor kitchen has oven, dishwasher and microwave. There is a terrace for relaxing and outdoor dining. First floor leads through the 1693 barn portion of the house to the second-floor living rooms and bedrooms.
Master bedroom overlooks olive groves and vineyards and the Castle of Mugnana. Ensuite bathroom (the loo with a view) overlooks the castle.
Second double-bedroom has views of fruit trees, vineyards and the small town of Strada in Chianti can be seen in the distance. Ensuite bath. (Can be converted into twin beds.)
Also on this floor are two long living rooms with panoramic views of the Church of San Donato, the Castle of Mugnana and at night, the illuminated hills of Fiesole can be seen in the distance.

Amazing Tuscan Experience

The pictures truly don't do it justice. It's a fantastic house, great scenery, and a fantastic deal. We rented a car, and it was an hour or so away from Pisa, and only a half hour away from Florence. Even if you didn't want to rent a car, it's about a 5-10 minute walk to the bus stop! We were easily able to see Florence, Rome, and Venice using this beautiful and comfortable home as a "base." In addition, if you want to see the olive trees or vineyards that make wine, all you have to do is look out the window! We loved having dinner on the patio right outside the kitchen, too. A vacation in Italy was the best one taken, and in no small part due to the house in which we stayed. I hope to return very soon.

This was our first trip to Italy and we dreamed of staying in a perfect Tuscan setting. We were thrilled when we arrived to find this beautiful farmhouse tucked away in the small village of Chiocchio. Not only was the house very clean, comfortable and well equipped, we had beautiful views from the patio and garden area and from all of the upstairs rooms. Lino was there to greet us and had even stopped at the store to pick up some groceries for us! After a long trip, his hospitality was much appreciated. Words cannot describe what a gift it was to meet Lino and to know he was close by if we needed anything. We visited Florence three times (don't miss the Uffizi Gallery and David in the Accademia). We loved the Chianti highway, visiting Greve, Radda, Castellina, and Siena. Also highly recommend Volterra. San Gimignano and Pisa were beautiful, although quite busy. Lucca is a charming place and the coastline is lovely. September is an absolutely wonderful time to be in Italy. Very warm days, but not too hot and a little quieter. We highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a quiet, centrally located home base in the Tuscan hills. It was everything we imagined and more. Thank you, Rita and Lino!

Charming Beyond Words

How can I adequately describe our experience at this beautiful farmhouse? It not only met, but exceeded our expectations. As former bed and breakfast owners for 13 years, I can tell you that the house is charmingly appointed with attention to detail; immaculately clean and situated on a hillside with breathtaking views from every window! This is a true Tuscany experience! But I must say that the crowning advantage of this lovely home is its owners. Rita helped us with every detail in preparing for our trip and her husband, Lino, took us "under wing" when we arrived. He took such good care of us, even in finding a dentist (for an emergency root canal) who spoke english! ! We became fast friends. Included in this experience we met one of the local farmers who invited us to his home to try his home-made wines and found that one of Tuscany's best restaurants "Locanda il Gallo" in the nearby village of Chiocchio. If you get to this restaurant order the Steak Florentine and say hello to Allesio for us. Glen & Sue from Texas

We were four long-time friends who decided to tour Italy and heard about renting farmhouses in the Chianti area as a base. And then we found LaCroce!! Though we enjoyed touring Florence, Lucca, Siena, San Gmigiagno, Pisa, Montepulciano, Pienza and elsewhere, we soon discovered that LaCroce was also a destination to be enjoyed and, I'm sure, to be remembered for years to come. Rita and Lino were extremely helpful and, while we were there, Lino was in the area. Lino! what a delightful person to have met!! All four of us would HIGHLY recommend a stay at LaCroce.

The farmhouse is exactly as described and the photos do capture the area. But you have to be there to appreciate those views. Four of us stayed here in April 2009 and used the house as a base to drive to small towns in Tuscany. We visited Siena, Lucca and stayed one night in Venice which we enjoyed. Our main reason for choosing La Croce was its proximity to central Chianti and the location off the main road. Rita gave us lists of restaurants, suggested vineyard tours and booked a two-day bike tour for us. The bike company picked us up at the house and we whole-heartedly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see Tuscany from the seat of a mountain bike. We also went to Florence twice to visit museums. We took the local SITA bus into town as it is difficult to park in the city and traffic is restricted. We have recommended this house to friends who have booked for this year. The vacation was everything we imagined and more.

Grape harvest in Chianti

The vineyards on the road to Greve in Chianti were being harvested while we were staying at the farmhouse last September. We have over 150 photos of the farmers and the Ape three-wheel small vehicles filled with grapes. We visited three vineyards to sample the wines and brought many bottles back to Canada with us. Rita and Lino (owners) supplied us with maps, lists of restaurants in the area, suggested day trips and made our stay most enjoyable. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

Tuscan Farmhouse La Croce

We spent two delightful weeks at La Croce Tuscan farmhouse. We both love to cook and spent time shopping in the local outdoor markets for fresh produce, fresh made pasta at the coop grocery store and wine. We picked tomatoes and zucchini from the garden at the house. The kitchen at the house is enormous with hand-painted tiles, an island for preparing meals, and it leads out to a paved patio where we enjoyed wine and cheese every evening while watching the sunset. The upstairs bedrooms and living rooms overlook the vineyards and olive groves. The owners were extremely helpful on suggestions on where to visit and even made reservations for us at museums in Florence so we did not have to wait on lines. We have recommended La Croce to friends who will be staying this year. Yes, we will certainly return for a longer stay.
