How do you do? As British as freshly buttered crumpets, this home is Downton Abbey in miniature, an elegant apartment crammed with antique furniture and fine china. Society ladies and waistcoated gents gaze down from their gilded frames and every object tells its story in tones of cut glass. Should one need a little fresh air, Battersea Park is across the drive, and when liquid refreshment is required, you’ll find Battersea has a wonderful assortment of watering holes, from ancient pubs to fashionable bars. Cross the river into Chelsea to grab a Burberry trench from King’s Road, or nip into town for dinner at the Dorchester – life is just grand.

Your hostess is a florist who spends much of the year in Malta. She’s the proud owner of a darling little dog – look out for her picture on the walls of her London home.
Cucumber sandwiches are practically obligatory, and should you be inspired to throw a full cream tea, you’ll find everything you need in the compact kitchen. Eat here at the dainty table, or take your Victoria sponge to the sofa. When the last lick of jam is gone, you can feast your eyes on your hostess’ lavish collection of art and sculpture. The bedroom is just as gorgeous – there’s a French dressing table, roses ramble from cushions to curtains, and look up from the bed to see three posies so exquisite you can almost smell their summery scent.

Battersea Park is just as pretty as you’d hope. Take a boat out on the lake, spend an afternoon at the zoo, or just picnic upon tufted turf. If you prefer to eat indoors, Battersea’s well-stocked with cafes and restaurants, and, just across the river, Chelsea’s King’s Road is a magnet for aristocratic shoppers gathering cashmere and pearls. Or, if you want to head to the West End, the journey from Battersea Park to Piccadilly Circus takes a little under half an hour.
