Grow tall

Pleasantly planted between Holland Park and Kensington Gardens, Bullingham Mansions is as pretty as an English rose. From the click of the wrought iron gate to the trickle of water in the courtyard’s fountain, this home is all tradition. Yet step inside and you’ll unearth fresher notes – colour, character and teacups abound. The patterned wallpapers flow from pastel florals to cute illustrations, while period armchairs and velvet textures provide plenty of spots to get cosy in. But before getting too settled, be sure to sample Kensington’s shops and restaurants, both just a stroll away.

British bloom

Your hosts divide their time between the Middle East, the West Country and London. But for all their adventures abroad, they love coming back to their charming patch of Kensington, especially with their children nearby at university.

Native nurture

Shades of soft lilac, coffee and blue-grey lend this home a gentle touch, and you’ll also find shapely sculptures and period sash windows holding sway in the sitting room. Admire the collection of china adorning the geometric shelves, or fix supper in the glossy kitchen just beyond.

And when it’s time to draw the curtains, you’ll find flowing wood floors give way to soft cream carpets in the bedrooms – which are both hushed, handsomely furnished and papered in glittering florals.

Location

Introducing Kensington

Bearing the words Royal Borough as part of an area name means responsibilities, and Kensington upholds them all: tradition, magnificence and heritage.

This enclave in central/west London, centred round the shopping haven of Kensington High Street, has a cosmopolitan air but without the transience of Knightsbridge or parts of Belgravia – locals move here to stay, including a large French contingent.

This fosters both a community spirit and an appreciation of culture – it was not by accident that US organic superstore Whole Foods Market chose this as its premier spot to open in London back in 2006, recognising the promising mix of customers’ ability to spend and loving the good, organic life.

Local ladies might lunch at Clarke’s on Kensington Church Street, but mainly on the weekends, as they are too busy holding down positions in the City arts and world of professional charity in the weeks – inhabitants here might be affluent, but not indolent.

The move of the Terence Conran-founded Design Museum from edgy Shad Thames to the former Commonwealth Institute on Kensington High Street, scheduled to open in 2014, might have come as a surprise to some, but this might well be the perfect place for a grown-up design destination – local yet lively, touristy yet classy, and with a small-community spirit that’s lacking in smugness.

About: onefinestay gives you the chance to stay in someone's place while they're out of town. You get to live their life for a few days and nights. Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room. And there's service to match. Nobody wants to be a tourist, so our homes come with recommendations from the people who live in them. For everything else, we're here 24/7.

Why Kensington & Chelsea:

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too. Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities. Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand. And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.
