It's always a crapshoot when you rent a house unseen. 24 previous 5-star ratings was almost too good to be true, but in the absence of any first-hand experience, it was all we had to go on. I am happy to be the 25th 5-star fan, and I'm no pushover. The last place we rented (February vacation in Colorado) got 2 stars out of me. Everything about the house says the owner cares - really cares. Everything was AT LEAST as good as advertised. It was clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated, and impressively stocked. There was nothing that you could need that wasn't there and easy to find. The owner has a spectacular housekeeping service that maintains everything in great order. When was the last time you switched on a lamp containing a 3-way bulb, and all three settings worked? This doesn't even happen in my own house! And yet, every lamp I used had a properly-functioning 3-way bulb. This is superb attention to detail in my opinion. Anne's home was ours. She trusts people enough to put everything 'out there'. Rather than hide things for fear of damage or theft, she provides everything as if she were having her own family stay there. It is all thoroughly clean and orderly, with instructions for everything. Top shelf. This is a find. I will be back many times, I expect, and year-round. I would live there if I had the chance. Anne - you are a gem of a person, with all your personal attention to everything, and your very personable manner in all emails and notes. My best regards to Bob and Peg who care for the place. I believe I will likely never have a rental experience this good ever again - except at the House on the Hill.

Anne, What an absolutely wonderful four days we had in Maine. Your house was beautiful and very comfortable! It is definitely the best equipped house that we have ever stayed at. I am so glad that we found your gem in Maine. If we ever need to stay in the area in the future, there will be no doubt where we will be staying. Thanks so much!

Our family (2 parents and 2 small boys) stayed at the House on the Hill for two nights in January and it was great! We were skiing at Sunday River and it was a perfect property to rent. The house was clean, modern, and spacious. It allowed plenty of room for all of us to relax and play. I would definitely stay here again.

We, a party of five, which included our son from CA, our daughter and her fiancé from Maine and my husband and me from MA, recently stayed at “The House on the Hill” for Christmas week. And, what a stay it was! Thank you, Anne, and your team for making the home so warm and welcoming for us. It was the perfect retreat before and after a day on the slopes, of which there were 7! From the time I first viewed this home on VRBO and then spoke with Anne, who responded quickly and thoughtfully, the experience of renting was delightful and easy. The posted photos of “The House on the Hill” depict the home accurately. It is a well cared for and very loved home. It is stocked with just about everything you could need for a vacation and definitely a comfortable layout for our party, with two bedrooms and a bath downstairs and a private master bedroom and bathroom upstairs, which my husband and I liked. And, might I add that our bed was especially comfortable. The home is clean and cozy and the efficient wood-stove adds ambiance and enhanced warmth. There was plenty of room for us all to cook, navigate, dine, and hang-out together in the Great room. As mentioned, we were away from the house for most of the day, and always looked forward to our late afternoon/evening returns. The Howard Pond neighborhood is peaceful and very pretty! The driveway was always plowed for us. We cooked breakfast and many dinners at the house but enjoyed lunch on the mountain, mostly at “Sliders” located at the Jordan lodge. We tended to ski over at Jordan Bowl the most (less crowds and great runs) which is why we would rendezvous at Sliders, where we enjoy both the food and vibe. However; my husband and I have previously dinned at most places on the mountain and enjoyed just about every meal. We had take-out one night from Smokin' Good BBQ and in our books they get 5 stars! Excellent and huge portions! It is located in the orange trailer which shares a parking lot with www.goodfoodbethel.com/? ~ a favorite stop off place for small food items. We dined at the Jolly Drayman twice because, again, we enjoy the vibe, brews and food there. As an English Pub they celebrated New Years Eve five hours early to coincide with the British Isles celebration and that worked very well for us tired skiers! This truly was a memorable, happy, relaxing and invigorating family vacation for us ~ which “The House on the Hill” contributed greatly towards. Looking forward to our return!

Some family members and I spent 3 nights at The House on the Hill this summer. We were invited to a last minute family gathering in the area and were looking for a comfortable place to stay. We could not have picked a better spot. The home was spotless, well maintained and very comfortable. We really loved the rocking chairs on the front porch. While we couldn't see too much of Howard Pond because of all the lush trees, we so enjoyed sitting there and listening to the loons and enjoying the quiet. We started our mornings there with coffee and our evenings ended there with a glass of wine. The kitchen was fully equipped and Anne had mentioned that she had all kinds of spices and oils stocked, so we brought some lobsters with us from Portland and made a lovely dinner. Anne was a pleasure to deal with, responded promptly to all my emails, and if my travels ever bring me back that way I will definitely stay here again. It would be great to come back here some day with friends for a girls getaway.

We had a wonderful time here at this beautiful inviting cabin! A covered porch for one of our rainy days where we could sit and sip our wine and reminisce. A lake within a very short walk, and a creek that was babbling thru the woods not far from the cabin. Covered bridges in the area to investigate as a well as ample hiking trails at various levels. Thank you Anne!! You were correct this was the perfect place for a girls long weekend.

The House on the Hill was a marvelous experience. If solitude and serenity are your goals then you could not find a more accommodating place to escape. The eerie call of the loon echoed through the night capturing the innate beauty of the Maine woods. Each morning we arose to the quietude and tranquil setting reflected by the still waters of Howard Pond. Hiking, golfing, bicycling are some of the many activities we enjoyed during our stay. Returning to the House on the Hill at the end of an eventful day was a welcome relief. The home was well stocked and offered all the amenities needed for a relaxing vacation. I strongly recommend the House on the Hill for its many comforts and accessibility to the Maine outdoors.

My family just spent a weekend at the House on the Hill. Our experience was great. Everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived, and the house really did have all the comforts of home. Being techies, we really appreciated touches like the 5.1 home theater sound system and flat TV, WiFi and even a wireless printer. But all of the other appointments were very nice, too...from the quality of the linens and comfort of the beds to the completeness of the kitchen utensils and dishware. All in all, a fine time was had by all.

Anne was great to work with and responded quickly to all my emails. The condo is very nicely decorated, fully stocked, plenty of pillows, blankets, extra bedding and towels. She even provided a Pack-n-Play and portable high chair for our baby. We would definitely stay here again when we come to Sunday River. It was about a 15 minute drive over to Sunday River from the condo.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 1995

About the owner: As a native Texan, my first visit to Maine was in the fall in the late 1980's. I was fortunate enough to stay with friends on Howard Pond and I fell in love with the place. For several years, I would return in the fall to this place that literally restored my soul... walking in the woods, listening to the loons and being surrounded by nature...very different from my 'city life' in Austin, Texas. One year when I got off the plane in Portland, I wondered to myself if I could possibly find a place of my own in this part of the world. It took a couple of years to find the land, hire the builder and take on such a project long distance. In 1995 construction was complete and I walked into the House on the Hill and fell in love all over again. Please be my guest..enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Sunday River, skating on the pond, walking in the woods or swimming and fishing in the summer or just relaxing by the fire or rocking away the hours on the porch.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love to walk in the woods in every season of the year. In the fall, I am convinced that there is no more spectacular fall folage anywhere in the world than in the Western Mountains of Maine on Howard Pond. It is great fun to have this house as a base and travel around the state and into New Hampshire and Vermont for day trips or take a couple of days and travel to the Maine coast. There are great antiquing, hiking, canoeing, biking and skiing adventures within minutes of the house. When the pond freezes, it is great fun to skate on that open frozen expanse of water. And, there is nothing like snowshoeing in the woods or on the trails at Sunday River or the Bethel Inn and Country Club..where you can also cross-country ski. Although, I don't downhill or snow board, my family loves the friendly and relaxed atmosphere at on the mountain. Bethel also has some lovely places to dine.
