This charming private retreat is nestled among Maples, Birches, and Firs with a view to Howard Pond. The tastefully decorated three bedroom, two bath cottage sleeps six with two queen beds and two twin beds. The inviting open living/dining/kitchen features a vaulted cathedral ceiling with roof windows that allow light to fill the home. The 6' pine dining table accommodates everyone.
The master suite with the adjoining loft living area is located on the second floor. The pine paneling, cabinets and pine wood floors add to the warmth and ambiance of this Maine woods' retreat. There will be the slightest sigh (ahh) of approval and excitement as you enter this gracious, welcoming environment. This is a place that can restore your soul. After a day full of activity, you can sit by the fire and watch the leaves or the snowflakes fall. Relax and wile away the hours in the rocking chairs on the 8'wide farmers porch that spans the front of the house.
Howard Pond is a pristine Maine pond that prohibits noisy watercraft and is home to a loon family. There is a public swimming area and dock near the dam. Adventurous hiking --including the Appalachian Trail & other hikes in the White mountains-- and quiet walks are just outside your door. You may even see a moose!
Downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling are all within 10 or 15 minutes of the house.
The Sunday River Golf Club is one of the premier courses in New England. The Bethel Inn and Country Club also provides a challenging 18 hole course.
Minutes away from the Adrossogin River, canoeing, kayaking, and guided trips are within easy access.

My family just spent a weekend at the House on the Hill. Our experience was great. Everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived, and the house really did have all the comforts of home. Being techies, we really appreciated touches like the 5.1 home theater sound system and flat TV, WiFi and even a wireless printer. But all of the other appointments were very nice, too...from the quality of the linens and comfort of the beds to the completeness of the kitchen utensils and dishware. All in all, a fine time was had by all.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children.

Anne was great to work with and responded quickly to all my emails. The condo is very nicely decorated, fully stocked, plenty of pillows, blankets, extra bedding and towels. She even provided a Pack-n-Play and portable high chair for our baby. We would definitely stay here again when we come to Sunday River. It was about a 15 minute drive over to Sunday River from the condo.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The House on the Hill was a perfect place to weather the Maine stormy days and then enjoy the close ski resort of Sunday River. Plenty of room and so very comfortable for all of us. Thanks for all the nice touches in the rooms and the kitchen - made the stay so easy and welcoming. What a warm and inviting place to call home for a few days! Just the fact that we had every spice and condiment known at our disposal made the stay nearly perfect. Furnishings are very comfortable, right down to the most excellent table and chair in the loft for doing puzzles! As a family we ski, we heat our own home with a Jotul woodstove and use cloth napkins - we found the same here! In short, we wanted for nothing except a longer stay. The kids - teens and twenty somethings do have a suggestion: could you get a dart board for the basement before we come again? And we will be back! Thanks so very much!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children.
Owner response: A dart board is on order! Do come back soon and often!

We stayed at The House on the Hill as part of our annual ski vacation to Sunday River. It was the perfect set up. We were six adults and had more than enough room. The kitchen had everything we needed, the linens were clean and crisp, and the house was spotlessly clean. We were able to cook our dinner and enjoy a nice evening before hitting the slopes. We arrived in two vehicles and had no issue with parking, in fact there was adequate space for more. We would recommend this accommodation to our friend.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks, Paul. You all are always welcome!

Our stay at the House on the Hill was perfect. Home is exactly as pictured; we'd love to return! We arrived with snow falling; the state of Maine cleared the roads very well, and the private drive to the home was also clear and ready for our arrival. Indoors was clean, comfortable, and peaceful. The house is within easy access to Sunday River skiing, as well as lovely walks along well marked trails in Grafton Notch State Park (about 18" of fresh snow on the ground, someone blazed the trail so it was easy to follow). We all had a wonderful time outdoors, even some sledding, and enjoyed retreating to the cozy home each evening. There are plenty of utensils, plates, pots, pans, spices, etc. to make vacation cooking easy. Shop-n-save in Bethel is a good grocery store for all food and wine needs. A container of maps and guides in the home was helpful for exploring the area.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: As a native Texan, my first visit to Maine was in the fall in the late 1980's. I was fortunate enough to stay with friends on Howard Pond and I fell in love with the place. For several years, I would return in the fall to this place that literally restored my soul... walking in the woods, listening to the loons and being surrounded by nature...very different from my 'city life' in Austin, Texas. One year when I got off the plane in Portland, I wondered to myself if I could possibly find a place of my own in this part of the world. It took a couple of years to find the land, hire the builder and take on such a project long distance. In 1995,I walked into the House on the Hill and fell in love all over again. Please be my guest..enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Sunday River, skating on the pond, walking in the woods or swimming and fishing in the summer or just relaxing by the fire or rocking away the hours on the porch.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love to walk in the woods in every season of the year. In the fall, I am convinced that there is no more spectacular fall folage anywhere in the world than in the Western Mountains of Maine on Howard Pond. It is great fun to have this house as a base and travel around the state and into New Hampshire and Vermont for day trips or take a couple of days and travel to the Maine coast. There are great antiquing, hiking, canoeing, biking and skiing adventures within minutes of the house. When the pond freezes, it is great fun to skate on that open frozen expanse of water. And, there is nothing like snowshoeing in the woods or on the trails at Sunday River or the Bethel Inn and Country Club..where you can also cross-country ski. Although, I don't downhill or snow board, my family loves the friendly and relaxed atmosphere at on the mountain. Bethel also has some lovely places to dine.
