Location: Indian Pass, Florida Main North West, Florida North West, Florida, USA
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)
A week at our Indian Pass beach home is total relaxation and stress reduction. You just will not find anything that compares to Sandpiper, anywhere.
Located prominently on the beach, we have unobstructed gulf views to the south and of the graceful curve of the coastline, forming the cape to the west. An ecologically diverse area, Indian Pass is the western most passage of Apalachicola Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. Immediately to the east of the peninsula is St. Vincent's Island, a National Wildlife Refuge and the first of 4 barrier islands that form the bay. We sometimes see bald eagles on the hunt and dolphins rounding up schools of bait fish, running off the beach. Our crab traps never fail to capture a bucket full of blue and stone crab for the pot.
The décor of the house is tasteful and fun. Cheerily painted walls and bright fabrics set off the rich wood tones in the natural pine trim and in the bamboo shades. Distinctive local maps, folk art, photographs and funky pottery pieces contribute to an eclectic look with an old Florida feel. The master bedroom with a king bed is on the main level of the house with a bath attached. Upstairs are the other two bedrooms with a shared bath. One bedroom has a queen bed and the other has two double beds.
The living spaces and bedrooms are oriented with windows opening to the great ocean views to the west and the south. Mornings, these views beckon you outside for a first cup, sitting on the end of your private boardwalk and a long shell seeking walk on the beach. On your return, you may want to take to the porch swing with your honey or set out the crab traps and hit the hammock.
Feel like cooking tonight? Have a seafood feast. With a little notice, a call to the shrimp lady will bring fresh, wild caught, jumbo shrimp to your doorstep. These are the freshest shrimp you will ever find, caught on her husband’s shrimp boat, trawling the night before in the waters right in front of the house. Sometimes we have a low country boil. Other times we just boil some shrimp or fresh crab. If you are here in scallop season, which is in August, collect a bucketful wading or snorkeling in the clear shallow waters of St. Joe Bay and knock yourself out with all the ways to prepare and enjoy your bounty.
Whether you are up for cooking or not, you owe it to yourself to go to the world famous Indian Pass Raw Bar, which is the local meeting place. Specializing in oysters and shrimp, the food is simply prepared in a great atmosphere. Beverages are self-serve out of the cooler that lines the back wall.
If you want to explore some, Apalachicola is rich in history and has several local museums and a good variety of interesting downtown shops. There are numerous restaurants offering a tasty variety of lunch and dinner options. You can also book eco-tours and explore the rich river, marsh and bay habitats. Farther afield is Wakulla Springs, where the old Tarzan movies were shot.
Of course, we are biased, but we think you will thoroughly enjoy the experience of staying in our Indian Pass home.
