Stonecutter’s Cottage takes you back in time

Stonecutter’s Cottage sits a top Doonagore, a spectacular high point which has views to the Atlantic Ocean, the Aran Islands, the Burren and the musical village of Doolin. It is situated on a quiet country road with nothing but gorse and grass to front and rear. No matter what direction you take when you step outside the cottage you will enjoy breathtaking ocean views stretching as far as Galway Bay and Connemara. Yet the buzz of the coastal villages of Doolin, Lahinch and Liscannor are only a few minutes away. Every day you will discover something new in the ever changing colours and hues of this most spectacular part of the world. You will truly forget what you left behind.

Less than 5 min drive to Doolin village and the Aran Island ferries, Lahinch and Liscannor and less than 10 min drive to Lisdoonvarna

Stonecutter’s Cottage is one of a row of four terrace-cottages. Today these cottages are the only reminder of what was once a thriving quarry village. The cottage was built in the post-famine style about 150 years ago for one of the quarry foreman (and his family and animals).

We completely restored the cottage when we bought it in 2001, keeping its original local-stone walls and traditional fireplace. The roof of the cottage is also constructed out of the stone from the quarry. We recommend a visit to the Liscannor Rock Shop which houses a small museum and photo archive of the history of the quarry and the village.

The pine-fitted kitchen is furnished with 19th century antique pine country kitchen table, bench and dresser. Antique pine chairs and wardrobes in the living room and bedroom recreate the rustic life that once was. The lounge has a traditional wood-burning stove that will make you so cozy in the evenings that you’ll never want to leave your spot.

We have tried to blend an authentic restoration with all the modern conveniences (like Central Heating) to ensure a dwelling of warmth, comfort and Celtic charm.

My dream came true! My mind wanders daily to the stonecutter's cottage

My wife and I booked a week at this incredible little home during the last week of September 2009. It served as homebase for morning hikes and afternoon site seeing. The wild blackberries were in season and made for great stops to munch on big handfuls of juicy sweetness. Not terribly fond of pub fare, and both of us liking to cook, we spent evenings in the cottage eating well, huddled beside a cozy fire in the antique woodstove. There is so much to do and see in the area. We could easily have spent two weeks. There hasn't been a day since returning that I haven't wished for a return visit.

Colorado Family finds heaven!

We stayed for a week in both cottages (my husband & I in one and my mother and nephew in the other) and we just loved the location (still haunts us...with it's amazing beauty) It was close to everything and made for morning walks with coffee just heavenlly! The peat fires at night are something that I still dream about with the fog rolling in outside..... Olive and her Husband were amazing and helped us out with anything we needed. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants the most cozy setting within a beautiful part of Ireland. We hope to return someday! Thanks!

Coming Home

Guest: Nicole Couture (Maine)
Date of Stay: 10/07/09 Review Submitted: 06/26/10

Coming home to the cottage after a day of adventure was always a wonderful feeling. The bright iron garden gate just seemed to say "Welcome back! Now get inside and get nice and cozy with a pot of tea." Everything was clean, cheerful, and there were no unhappy surprises. We were sad to have to go home at the end of the week.
