Beautiful and private!!

Guest: KB (MN)
Date of Stay: 06/10/11 Review Submitted: 07/19/11

We stayed in the Grand Retreat to celebrate our two sons graduations;one from UMD and the other from HS. We brought both sets of grandparents along to make the weekend a wonderful celebration with our family. The home was just as pictured and perfect down to the last detail. We hiked on the roads, along the creek, and nearby trails. I loved that we had plenty of space for everyone to gather in a variety of settings, and plenty of space to get out and do your own thing. There were movies and cable TV for the kids too! We spent mornings on the deck and evenings by the firepit. We all loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to gather.

Owner response:Katy, Thank you for the great review! We are pleased that our home worked well for a multiple family retreat. We hope to see you again in the future. Greg and June

Highly Recommend the Grand Retreat for a Winter Get Away

Guest: Annette (Minneapolis, MN)
Date of Stay: 03/04/11 Review Submitted: 03/08/11

We were looking for a home close to the ski hill with enough room for several couples. It was important to me that the space be comfortable for a group, relaxing and convenient. Grand Retreat met all our needs perfectly. When we arrived, the home was very clean, it is welcoming and the view in the morning is stunning. The photos on the website are very accurate, what you don't see is all of the great storage space - which we needed for ski gear, snowshoes, etc. The fireplace and living room was my favorite space. I could have spent a week curled up there with a good book. The kitchen and dining space was plenty big for several cooks to work together and enough space for your group to dine together. We woke up on Sunday morning to a beautiful sunrise and a perfect snowfall. I would recommend Grand Retreat to my friends and family. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

Owner response:Thanks Annette! We apprecate your commenst and are pleased that the Grand Retreat was able to accomodate your group and that you enjoyed the fireplace. Greg and June

Our Extended Christmas with Family

Guest: Happy Renter (Minneapolis, MN)
Date of Stay: 12/26/10 Review Submitted: 01/04/11

We arrived at The Grand Retreat on December 26th and spent the week after Christmas there. It was an absolutely wonderful vacation! The house is big, beautiful, clean, and picturesquely located next to a beautiful creek and view of Lake Superior. The layout of the house perfectly accommodates a large group of people. We had 9 adults and 5 children under the age of 5. Everyone had a place to sleep (since the children don't mind sleeping bags), the kitchen and dining room is large enough for everyone to cook and eat comfortably, and the house is spacious enough to go away to your own corner if you just can't take the running and screaming of 5 young boys anymore who are having the time of their lives! Which leads me to mention the Theater Room and how wonderful it was to have this. We used it to keep kids quiet. Others can use it to watch movies in a dark, comfortable setting with great sound and beautiful ambiance. The Great Room with the wall of windows was beautiful and allowed many opportunities to watch the sun rise above the lake and see the wildlife wander through the forest. The wood burning fire place in the Great Room was also a nice touch and gave it a very up north woodsy feel. Other notable features are the outside fire pit, heated garage, beautiful deck, awesome water pressure, and clean water for drinking and laundry. The location is wonderful. It feels very secluded with only a tiny glimpse of any neighbors in the distance, yet easy enough to run down the hill to a gas station, stores, short drive to Lutsen Mountain, and less than 20 miles to Grand Marais. The house was everything as described and more. We were pleasantly surprised the minute we walked in the door, and very sad to leave when our vacation was over. We were able to make it feel like home for a week, and there wasn't a thing we were missing. Greg and June are available if you need anything. I do want to mention that we did get cell reception and 3G coverage on our AT&T cell phones. Verizon works up there as well. Others might, but can't be sure since those are the only two we used up there. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a large home to rent specifically because of the overall quality of the house, location, and ease of renting from Greg and June. This will be the house we use for our future adventures to the North Shore.

Owner response:Ashley; That makes our day! Were very happy that everything went well and the stay was as stress free as possible. We hope to hear from you next year. Grg and June

Grand Retreat Wedding!

Guest: Marissa (Plymouth, MN)
Date of Stay: 09/09/10 Review Submitted: 09/23/10

We had the most amazing time at the house in Lutsen! Our small, intimate wedding was held in the living room next to the windows overlooking the woods outside. The house was a perfect spot for everyone (8 of us) to relax and enjoy ourselves with ease and comfort! Caterers came and hosted us in the kitchen, the table was quite large and fit us comfortably. The home is secluded from the road and offers a great get away where you can build a fire inside or out and have some great down time. Greg and Ruth were awesome to deal with, they offered their help with anything we needed. I would strongly recommend this site if you are looking for an escape from reality and want a beautiful home to get away to! We will definitely be back! Thanks guys for your hospitality, we really love it here!

Owner response:Marissa; Congratulations on your wedding! Greg and June

Perfect Vacation

Guest: Amy (Austin, MN, USA)
Date of Stay: 07/18/10 Review Submitted: 08/09/10

This home was beautiful! Even better than the description and pictures show. It was very clean and seemed brand new. We had a family reunion here in July 2010 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We enjoyed cooking dinners together in the lovely kitchen. And we enjoyed sitting around the outdoor fire pit, and playing games in the living room with beautiful views of the forest. I would definitely recommend this property to others. It's a perfect wilderness getaway with luxury accomodations.

Owner response:Thanks Amy - We enjoy hearing about family gatherings! Greg and June

July 4th at Grand Retreat

Guest: Dawn (Washington, DC)
Date of Stay: 07/02/10 Review Submitted: 08/07/10

Our extended family (8 people) stayed at the Grand Retreat over the 4th this year. We loved the house. Very clean, nicely appointed, exceptionally comfortable, and neighbors were just far enough away. Location is perfect for seeking wildlife, fishing and the occasional trip to town. We were fond of how the house was set up, in that if you wanted to check out of this hectic, stressful modern existence it was easy to do. We didn't take advantage of the Verizon broadband so we can't comment on that. We would recommend it to others, especially larger groups.

Owner response:Dawn - thanks for the review of our house. Were glad that you were able to unwind and destress. Greg and June

The Perfect Week!

Guest: Rob (Forest Lake)
Date of Stay: 07/10/10 Review Submitted: 07/21/10

We recently had a great family week at the Grand Retreat. The property was clean and very well maintained. The location is perfect for all things on the North Shore from Gooseberry Falls to Grand Portage! We took long walks from the Grand Retreat in both the morning and evening. Up Caribou Trail a little we found Crescent Lake where our son (age 5) caught a 2 pound bass - he was in heaven. We also hiked with our daughters (age 9 and 11) to the top of Eagle Mountain, highest point in Minnesota. We spent a fair amount of time in Grand Marais, Cut Face Beach and Cascade River State Park. We drove to the end of the Gunflint Trail - which is not a bad drive. It's all paved. If you have never been to Grand Portage State Park, you should go. The drive north of Grand Marais has some great views of Lake Superior. The walk to stunning Pidgeon Falls is very easy - and paved most of the way. Coming back every day to the Grand Retreat was nice. Very relaxing and quiet. The kids loved the home theater. We grilled, read, relaxed, talked, did a jigsaw puzzle, played board games and cards, ate too much and enjoyed the family time thoroughly. Our son was most impressed that we didn't check emails or phone calls while at the Grand Retreat - a good lesson to take home with us. There is a gas station and convenience store about a mile south of Caribou Trail and Highway 61. They sell bait there as well. There is a liquor store in that building as well. Next door to the convenience store building is a coffee shop. Sporto's South of the Border Cafe in Grand Marais has great breakfasts. You can't go through Grand Marais without getting Sven and Ole's Pizza (we got it frozen and brough it home to cook) and the World's Greatest Donut Shop. The rock shop in Beaver Bay is nice. We also recommend stopping at the Fish Out of Water gift shop and the gift shop in Tofte opposite the Sawbill Trail. We did go to Lutsen Ski Resort for the Alpine Slide this year. In previous years we've done gondola and hiked at the top. There's a nice restaurant and viewing area at the top. This stay at the Grand Retreat was well worth the family memories we created. Our kids are already talking about next year..... We highly recommend the Grand Retreat. Thanks Greg and June for the wonderful opportunity. Rob and Tammy

Owner response:Both June and I are very happy that you and your Family had a great week up in Lutsen and look forward to hosting you in the future. Thanks

A Grand Retreat

Guest: General Halftrack (Scandia, MN)
Date of Stay: 10/08/09 Review Submitted: 04/09/10

My wife and I hosted a weekend at the Grand Retreat. This place lives up to Greg and June's description and then some! The home is very well appointed and more than capable of supporting a large group. You will be awed upon entry into this home; it is 'Grand', yet cozy. The upscale furnishings augment the wilderness setting. The home is very secluded, but has easy access to hiking and skiing. We will definitely return, and strongly recommend this option for a relaxing long weekend. Very accommodating hosts also, a pleasure to deal with.

Owner response:Were very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon. Greg and June
