Every vacation destination makes you think that you will have the beach to yourself and get up close and personal with local wildlife. A few vacation rentals "promise" that the bed will be exquisitely comfortable, the outdoor shower hot with an ocean view and that the kitchen will please a serious cook. To our JOY, Hale Honu delivered all of that and more..... We loved: 1. Visits from Maile and Sachi (even after their baths!) 2. Laniakea Beach- sitting in the surf inches from feeding the turtles 3. Shave Ice and Wednesday Farmer's Market at the Waialua Sugar Mill 4. Great seafood at Jamison's Restaurant 5. Great vegetarian food at Beet Box Cafe 6. A final romantic dinner at home with a visit from Wendy, the Personal Chef. The free use of snorkels and bikes and beach toys meant that we could explore flora and fauna above and below. No resort could come close. The turtles outside the back gate were so much fun to watch, including the one snoozing on the shore. Pom says " Best Birthday Ever!!!" Note from Pat: I am thrilled that Deni and Pom had such a memorable birthday week. They have introduced us all to the services of Wendy Gorka, Waialua Personal Chef who prepares meals to order and delivers to my Guests to enjoy under the canopy of stars. What a wonderful offering to be able to offer to our upcoming Guests from Australia, US and Japan. Mahalo Deni and Pom and we look forward to your return back here soon! Aloha, Pat and Jan, Maile and Sachi

I have never in my life taken a vacation where I could truly relax. I didn't know I was even capable of it until staying in your Guest Cottage! The view from the back yard is unbelievable! Marc and I absolutely loved spending each morning outside with our morning coffee overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I'm so spoiled now by the privacy we enjoyed on our vacation that I'm sure I'll never be able to stay at a resort again. We enjoyed being literally steps away from the beach and were delighted with the presence of the turtles everyday! We can't thank you enough for letting us play with your Silky Terriers, Maile and Sachi. They are so lovable and so well-mannered. Oh, did I mention that Marc know wants an Outdoor Shower. THAT is truly a relaxing experience. We can't wait to plan another visit. BEST VACATION EVER!! Lisa and Marc L Tampa Florida

AND MORE, and they all worked perfectly. Facilities and amenities are top-of-the-line quality. Needless to mention, the location cannot be better than this. Literally ocean-front in a nice quiet residential neighborhood, just a few steps to the white sand beach and less than 10 minutes drive into the town of Haleiwa. In short, relaxing and comfortable. Very Hawaiian, period. Here are just a few of our many favorite things we enjoyed right here at Hale Honu....see Part IV.

Special thanks to Pat who drove all the way from the opposite side of the island to greet us on our first day. Your warm welcome coupled with the thorough explanation about the house made such a big difference to make our stay both comfortable and enjoyable. As many other guests have commented in the guest book, we could clearly see that this beautiful house is looked after with extra attention to detail, extremely clean and well-appointed. We enjoyed our stay in your lovely home. A highlight of our visit to the North Shore was seeing the pro body boarding contest at the Bonzai Pipeline, where the monster waves were 20 ft to 30 ft! We also enjoyed a day trip to Honolulu and Waikiki, returning by way of the scenic eastern coast. LOVED walking on the beach here and seeing all of the sea turtles swimming close to shore. Thank you for everything! We have spent a lovely week here. It is now very hard to be heading home. You home is wonderful-the perfect place to relax and unwind. We loved seeing the turtles everyday and falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean at night. We also loved our morning visitor "Sachi" who came to see us (Pat's younger 3 yo Silky Terrier) and be with us each day. It was a perfect week to ease into being the big "40". This truly was the perfect place to ring in the New Year! And thank you for leaving your Christmas tree up----it reminded us of what time of year it was....as it is so easy to get swept away in time as in a paradise lost sort of thing. Heidi and Eric's descriptions of this amazing place didn't really do it justice and (as they said): "no words can possibly describe the sights, sounds, and tastes of Hawaii". They had to bring us here! Your place is 2nd to none. It is so beautiful and roomy...

MAHALO NUI LOA! What a wonderful place to come to and relax. Loved coffee in the morning with Terry listening to the waves crashing before everyone else woke up. You home was just what the doctor ordered. Took advantage of the wonderful outdoor shower EVERYDAY. Picked up some sort of treasure on every walk on the beach. One day we had a turtle lay right across our path. Somehow we missed the other nine that came out to sun themselves on the walk down the beach. We counted their tracks.... Loved our trip to the "secret beach" just down the way. We had it all to ourselves. We loved meeting you and your house and your hospitality was exactly the way Terry and Stacie described it to us. Thank you again for sharing it with us. Everything was absolutely phenomenal! Mele Kalikimaka! Dave, Lynette, Nole and Stephanie Rockford, Illinois

Dear P and J, Our 2 week stay in your beautiful home is now coming to an end. Your home exceeded all of our expectations: the Outdoor Shower, comfortable beds, every amenity imaginable and the bonus of both a private pool and the ocean immediately outside our door. We could not get enough of the turtles and were fortunate enough to see a large turtle take an afternoon nap on the sand! Amazing! This was the perfect spot for B and I's 50th Anniversary! Where to begin? I write this looking out at the ocean contemplating the WONDERFUL time we've had over the past couple of weeks. You have a SPECTACULAR property here and your PRIDE of OWNERSHIP really shows. This was the PERFECT spot for us to celebrate a long year. From falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the beach to enjoying leisurely morning coffee on the deck chairs out back, to grilling tasty meals on the BBQ to "getting on island time (neither of us wore a watch while we were here!), we have loved every minute of our time here. After spending several past vacations in Waikiki, our time here was 10 times more relaxing and we are certainly converted! No more hotels for us! We absolutely cannot wait to be back (soon we hope!) With your busy lives, thank you for taking the time to share your beautiful home in paradise with those of who need a special place to come to. It was wonderful to get to know you and we look forward to keeping in touch! Let us know if you're ever in Calgary-we'd love to take you cross-country skiing! Happy memories of this place will keep us warm during the upcoming winter months back home. We look forward to seeing you again soon.... Much alove, Laura and Robin Calgary Canada P.S. Highlights of the trip/recommendations for other Guests: -the outdoor shower" sudsing up" while looking at the ocean = priceless! -grilling our own fresh fish -relaxing with a book in the backyard -bike touring around Waialua and Haleiwa -surf lessons and paddle boarding with Uncle Bryan -coconut shrimp at the Grass Skirt Grill -Waimea Beach Park-beautiful beach! Note from Pat: Laura and Rob are an adorable couple. Rob is a 3 time Olympian Cross Country Skier and is a Mortgage Broker in Calgary. I think i might just be somewhat intimidated to go cross-crountry skiing with him! He routinely ran 8-15 miles every day. A real sweetheart. Laura just became a member of the Canadian Bar Association and is a gem! Smart, beautiful, peaceful, articulate, caring: a real doll. Thank you Jennifer for sending Laura and Rob to us! Dear Pat and Jan, So much to write and so little space. We dreamed of this vacation since we married 10 years ago. Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo for turning our dream into a reality. I'll never be content with showering indoors again! A week here is not long enough to quench our thirst for the North Shore. Your attention to detail here has not gone unnoticed. It truly has all the comforts of home. You are right. I should have brought ONLY a few t-shirts, shorts, a swimsuit and nothing else. After shopping, eating out, swimming with sharks and attending a luau and show, it felt wonderful each evening to be able to come "home". Hopefully, next time, Michael and I can spend more time with you, Jan, Maile and Sachi. We envy the "hang loose" attitude of the North Shore. We're going to take it back home and see how it goes :) Much love from Hollis, Oklahoma Michael and Shelly Mefford Note from Pat: Mike and Shelly are an adorable couple from Oklahoma (my first set of Guests from OK!) They were in awe of the natural beauty here in the Islands from the moment they stepped through the front custom gates of the property. They have 2 young children at home and have not had a chance to get away time for themselves. Thank you both for traveling all the way here to meet and stay with us! You will keep a piece of our lifestyle with you each and every day in your soul and heart. The trades, surf, turtles and fresh air will always be with you. Dear Pat and Jan, We enjoyed every minute of our time here. This is THE PERFECT place to get away from the busy life of Waikiki. This type of atmosphere is what you would expect when you picture Hawaii. If people were looking for sea turtles, there is no need to visit Hanauma Bay, although we still recommend it, but all the turtles you could ever want to see are in your back yard! Pat and Jan, We've had another wonderful week at your Guest Cottage. We found your place to be PERFECT in 2009, and were happy to find it even better than we remembered this visit. We spent even more time on the North Shore this week. We enjoyed biking into Haleiwa, relaxing on your beach, and our surf lessons with Uncle Bryan (highly reommended). Check out surfnorthshore.com We had terrific dinners at Haleiwa Joe's and Luibueno's and of course, the Grass Skirt Grill hit the spot every day for lunch in Haleiwa. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful home with Visitors like ourselves. It truly is a special piece of paradise! We are already planning our 3rd trip back, and hope that your place will be available. Mahalo! CAME BACK FOR MORE! We stayed here 3.5 years ago and when we knew we were coming back, we knew we had to stay at "Pat's Place" again! We spent a few days in Waikiki and couldn't wait to get up to the North Shore for some peace and quiet! This here, is what Hawai'i is really about. And the TURTLES are still here! I love them! I was wondering how many of them are the same family from 3 years ago? Something new we did this time was a sunset cruise on a catamaran to do some whale watching. Highly recommend this ! Deep Ecology-1-800-578-3992 located in Haleiwa. Saw lots of whales! 2 Hour Tour for $60/per person. So worth it and loved every minute of it too. Dear Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, In all of our travels, we have finally found the best place to lose track of time. It took us some time to locate an intimate and romantic cottage away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Although illness kept us anchored and we didn't have the opportunity to explore the island as we had hoped. Maile, Sachi and the Hawaiian Sea Turtles entertained us and brightened our days-the freakish storm and meteor shows offered terrific light shows at night. Pat and Jan are fantastic hosts--they catered to all of our needs. Pat was extremely helpful in assisting us to find sites on Oahu that you typically don't find in the brochures and we hope your futures Guests do not need the hospital emergency room as we did! We still have another week in Hawaii and I hope we can get on track with our planned sight seeing. But I cannot imagine even the Honolulu Hilton Hawaiian Village improving on what Pat and Jan have to offer here in Waialua! Note from Pat: Dennis and Suzy were such incredible "troopers" from Atlanta. Suzy had a recent bout of pneumonia while in their home in Atlanta and experienced a relapse on the plane ride over. What pleasant folks who enjoyed all the offerings of Dish Network here at the Guest Cottage....along with all of the movies!

Dear Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, Thank you so much for creating such a warm wonderful Cottage retreat. Truly every detail made the "turtle home" a true paradise. We've been able to really truly relax here after a very busy farming season back home. The pet therapy was just wonderful as I was getting lonely for our Mini-Schauzer and Golden Retriever who are now frolicking in 8" of fresh snow. We loved the kitchen for homemade meals. The beach access and all the things to play on the beach were so appreciated. Everything in the house was so beautiful and comfy, but the outdoor pool and shower are at the top of our list. We go home with so many wonderful memories to tell our families-especailly the Grandkids. Your hospitality was so appreciated-we'd love to extend ours to you someday! John will have to trade your soaking pool for a hot tub that needs to have the snow removed from the top of it. God Bless and have a wonderful holiday season! Mahalo! Mahalo! Mahalo! Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, We have enjoyed our stay here enormously. We have been to the North Shore a few times before and love the quiet, peaceful location of this house the best! Endless quiet beaches, but yet still so close to Haleiwa town--A Perfect Location. The house was beautiful-super comfy bed, fabulous equipment: bikes, snorkel gear-all in excellent condition. The dogs and Jan and Pat fabulous hospitality made it complete---can't wait to come back. P.S. LUV the outdoor shower and pool----Never showered inside! Aloha, Rachel and Roman Long Beach, CA

Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, Thank you so much for making paradise available at SUCH A REASONABLE COST! The Guest Cottage was incredible--gave us ideas for our own home. You provided the opportunity for creating memories that will last a lifetime such as: kayaking, bike rides, the thunder of the ocean, the turtles and a peaceful oasis to come back to at the end of each day. Peace and Joy to you and those you love and those you don't. Sherrylin and Jeff Calgary, Canada

Thanks Pat and Jan for sharing your GORGEOUS home with us. We loved everything about it----the stunning view from our living room, the quiet, peaceful bedroom, the heavenly mattress, sheets and pillows, the luxurious bathroom, the beautiful landscaping, the wonderful stone work, the well-equipped kitchen (how homey with a salad spinner!), the elegant furnishings and art work on the walls-----you are both so generous and gracious hosts. We really enjoyed getting to know you and Maile and Sachi and we wish you the best of everything! Mahalo! Nancy Mc Lane Denver, Colorado

Dear Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, Mahalo so much....Thanks for allowing us the use of your home. It has been a wonderfully relaxing week. Thanks also for all the tips on restaurants, beaches, etc. We have truly enjoyed the peace of the North Shore people we have met. Hale Honu is the perfect getaway with all the comforts of home. The Turtles are a delight to watch. We didn't see as much of Maile and Sachi as we had hoped (we are dog people!) but it was enough to keep Donna from missing ours too much. Hope to return again soon! Mahalo, Mike and Donna Hewitt Jackson Tennessee Note from Pat: Jan and I took the girls on a little vacation to town town for 4 days (Diamond Head Area): we stayed at Jan's vacation rental: Diamond Head Beach Hotel and Residences: vrbo.com/277096. Maile and Sachi just loved Mike and Donna!

Thankyou sooo... very much... Pat, for letting us have the bestest and mostest of true hawaiian experience ever. We have been visiting Hawaiian islands every year, since last 11 years. But this was our first stay in Oahu's North shore, and as skeptical and as picky we are, it exceeded our expectations the minute we entered this wonderful beach home. We loved everything inside and outside of your "little oasis in hawaii". It was truly a heavenly experience, with all your generosity and hospitality and the beach at your doorstep, we got so comfortable and relaxed, that at the end of our stay we totally forgot to write our review on your suggestion book. We sincerely apologize for the delay. Until next time, we are enjoying the memories in pictures and videos of watching the sunsets sipping tea from your backyard, playing with maile and sachi ( the friendliest dogs we ever met), the trade winds, the calming sounds of the ocean waves, the swaying of the palm trees, the turtles outside your backyard and the best of all surfing and kayaking in the beautiful mornings....having it all .... not to mention, the beach accessories provided was the "icing in the cake". We wish we stayed another week. Definitely next time. Thankyou once again, Pat and Jan, Maile and Sachi, we will be back ! Love, Pushp, Rachna and Varun. San Diego, California.

Dear Pat, Just back in from the Outdoor Shower----we will miss that and all the ALOHA here. Had an extraordinary relaxed time-got absolutely NO WORK DONE. Nice hedge cut, more ocean view the better and how! A lovely spot, enjoyed many home-cooked meals here too. Love your dishware. Good Luck with your "new" Cottage in town. Well, back to Venice, CA for us. Thanks for all the memories here on Au Street. Your Cottage layout here works perfectly! Our regards to Jan....didn't see Maile as much but give "Hopeful aka Sachi" a pat on the head for us. Much aloha, enjoy the rest of the summer. Thank you again for a SUPREME vacation! Love you all, Wendy and Bill Bengston Venice, CA Note from Pat: The "new" Cottage is our 1929 Restoration on 11th Avenue in Kaimuki by Diamond Head Theatre. We are looking forward to having a home in town again so that we can come back and forth as needed. Wendy and Bill are such fashion plates in their "Surf Line" aka "Jams" on Kalani Street. They may be the new Owners, and if so, we will be seeing more of them as they are very neat folks! Thanks for the Guest Comments guys....A Hui Hou!

Dear Pat, Jan, Maile and Sachi, Thank you so much for the respite we received in your home. The Cottage was lovely, but the location is what made the week. We loved the turtles out the front ocean gate and the chance to walk for hours to the west. The beautifully appointed kitchen allowed us to cook like we do at home, which was a blessing given the lack of fine dining on the North Shore. We did eat at Grass Skirt Grill and found it both delicious and friendly. Do go there! Shark's Cove was amazing for snorkeling. For beach loafing, anywhere you want to pull over and dive in was good for us! We can't wait to come back and visit you ladies!!! With much love, J and M Portland, Oregon
