I spent three months here with 4 coworkers while in town on a special work project. This was much better than staying in an extended stay hotel. Located in West Seattle it was within walking distance to groceries, restaurants, bars, and a gym. There is a bus stop across the street that has an express route to downtown. The house was comfortable with all amenities included. The owners were very accomodating in meeting our needs and taking care of the exterior maintenance.

Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Hum-House: Great vacation find within 15 minutes of downtown Seattle

I vacationed in Seattle with my adult children from multiple states in late September and we had a wonderful stay at the Hum House. With 4 bedrooms there was ample room for 6 adults and the house was only 10-15 minutes from downtown Seattle. I appreciated the first floor bedroom since I was able to avoid climbing any steps beyond those leading to the the front door. Teri Laffan is great to work with and we appreciated her willingness to share her home. I was looking for accommodations where we could gather together to have family fun but where everyone had the option of privacy and Hum House fit the bill perfectly. Since my other option was separate hotel rooms I found the price very reasonable at the Hum House. My youngest son and his wife preferred doing more hiking and outdoor activities and said the public transit system close to Hum House was excellent for their needs. If we ever manage to get back to Seattle again we will definitely want to stay at Hum House.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Teri and Dan: Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your charming house. It truely was a home away from home for our family of 5. It was nice after our long journey back from Europe to have a restful and warm place to stay while we were waiting to move into our house. We were all very comfortable. Our teenage daughters (as well as Art and I) were thrilled with the way the rooms were decorated and with the comfy beds. The house was so well appointed it's clear you tried to think of everything to make your guests feel at home. We also appreciated being so close to everything in West Seattle. We oftened walked to the stores and restaurants. I also want to thank you both for your kindness and willingness to be flexible with us as we waited for our house to be ready. It was great meeting you both and getting to know you.

Teri -- We had a wonderful time in West Seattle. Your home was great for our family. Our kids loved painting on your easel in the backyard & exploring "the Junction" during the street festival. We will definitely vacation in Seattle again! Our son caught his first fish at the pier and our daughter took an art class at the Curious Kids shop. Thanks again for the hospitality. Thank you for sharing your home with us for the past week. I has been a peaceful haven for my family after a day of exploration in Seattle. I especially enjoyed some quiet time in the mornings and evenings just watching the hums (hummingbirds) on the back porch. I'll really miss a little hum that I nicknamed "Twitch" - little bird can't sit on the wires or branches for more than 10-15 seconds without flapping his wings or taking off ..... just to come back to the same perch! When he settles in at one of the feeders, his little wings twitch like he's ready to take off in a moments notice. We really enjoyed our time here and hope that we can make it back to Seattle and to stay in our favorite "Hummingbird House" !

Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We love the Hummers, too, and now we call the bird you are talking about "Twitch" also - he has lived in our little tree for five years! He likes to hang out on the chimes near the hanging plants and always moves his head back and forth looking for other birds trying to sneak and get the nectar! Great home but extremely difficult landlord to deal with. Would NOT recommend.

I was relocated to Seattle for work and moved into this home for a 6 month period. The home itself was very nice and the location was great but the owner was extremely difficult to deal with. My wife is an extremely tidy person and we left the home in exceptional condition, yet she would not return our damage deposit. We were unable to get the phone system working for nearly a month, the television programming was reduced as soon as we moved in (after we offered to pay a portion of it), the lawn was rarely maintained, and so on and so on. We had nothing but conflicts with the owner. I would caution anyone to rent this home for any extended period, as you will have nothing but problems in dealing with the landlord. We were planning on taking her to small claims court, yet decided not to because it wasn't worth the added stress. Loved Seattle and loved our time there, with this home being the single exception.

Owner response: We have had many nice folks, both long and short term, stay in our home over the past 5 years that were thoroughly happy us and our home. We have never had Guests like this. They came to see our home, loved the house, furniture, artwork and the price was right. Later, he argued about our normal monthly price among many other things: his company paid for their entire stay! Cost was never an issue with other clients whose companies paid for their stay. We went out of our way to make these people comfortable and to give them phones, extra storage, change programming, moved furniture, etc. Nothing was appreciated. These Guests also wanted us to remove the original art which is a big part of our home! They complained about everything and am sure would do this anywhere they rented. It was a very disappointing experience and we would not rent our home to these people again. House Keeper's Statement (Suzy) : "The house, especially the kitchen, was very dirty. I found breakage of an antique vase, a hand carved angel, a burned deck and a broken grill. There were colored chalk drawings all over the deck railings which were very hard to get off. They moved all the furniture, which isn't allowed unless moved by the owner. The owner has explicit directions for our recycle system but we had to sort through everything which included, rinsing out dirty containers, taking many things out that didn't belong which included dirty diapers! There was so much garbage that we had to haul it away ourselves before the next guests came to stay. All in all, it took myself and my coworker three days to clean everything."

This was my first visit to Seattle & I couldn't have asked for a better house to stay in. It was always a pleasure to come back here after a long day of walking and roaming around the city. Nathan Moya I arrived not knowing what to expect - and the house delivered. Close enough to the city (water taxi) but far enough away to be quiet/quaint. Very good inrto to Seattle! Anastacio Moya

Dear Dan and Teri- We had a wonderful stay at your Hummingbird House. The beautiful decorations, stunning artwork and attention to detail made for a unique home away from home experience. The location was ideal for our numerous Seattle adventures. Our boys, Lucca, age 5, and Kai, age 3, enjoyed our bus rides to downtown and Alki Beach. We sailed across Elliott Bay aboard the water taxi, rode the monorail to the Seattle Center, picnicked atop the space needle, hit every stop along the South Lake Union Trolley and finally rode the Duck Boat! This cute house provided us an unique way to experience American life and best place to celebrate Hai's graduation! Carlos graduated from lawschool on May 17, 2008! Teri and Dan, thank you so much for providing such a wonderful envioronment. The house was perfect! We enjoyed the tranquil back yard and the frequent hummingbird visits! This was the perfect place to celebrate Carlos' graduation! Gracias! Dear Dan and Teri- We were so busy the whole time we were there that we did not write comments. We had a really great time and the house was wonderful. It is very charming and everything we could need was available. You could certainly use me as a reference if you need to. I don't really have any suggestions, everything was just right! Dear Teri, Our family had a great time staying at your Hummingbird House. You have clearly invested a lot of time into caring for the home and creating a comfortable place for visitors to enjoy. Thanks again for sharing your lovely home. The Descalzis Thank you so much for sharing your charming home with us. We loved the back yard and appreciated the thoughtfulness and organization of every aspect in the house. The beach was also easy to visit between other activities. We were impressed with Seattle's emphasis on recycling and learned a lot of how we can contribute better to re-using at home. Thanks again!

Dear Teri and Dan, What a lolvely "Hummingbird House" you have here. It is so beautifully renovated and perfect for our family reunion. We did a lot of sightseeing and just "hanging out" as the grandkids say. Yesterday was the best with our trip to Banibridge Island. Your resident hummingbirds always welcomed us home while our son from California grilled beef in the back yard. We had some good bridge games, too! Thank you for your absolutely delightful hospitality! Dear Teri, Many thanks for providing such a comfortable and beautiful place for us to stay whilst we were in Seattle for a wedding! We throuroughly enjoyed the stay, the amenities and the art. Hi Teri The Brazilian family was very happy with the accomodations at the Hummingbird house. It worked out great for them. Thanks for the great stay for my relatives. Teri and Dan, We enjoyed our time in your beautiful Hummingbird House very much. We loved all the personal touches such as the artwork, the piano, and blankets in the living room. It made us feel right at home. We enjoyed the fresh flowers and the back yard very much and your well-stocked kitchen made preparing meals very quick and easy. Thank you so much for accommodating my request for a crock pot!! It worked great! Having such a wonderful place to stay helped make this a great vacation for our family. The Hummingbird House provided a wonderful home base while we visited Seattle. The house is bright, cheery and clean and the yard is beautiful. And, yes, we saw quite a few hummingbirds at the porch feeder and at some of the shrubs. The entire family felt comfortable!
