Owner Description

We fell in love with this home the minute we saw it. This home is "our" home. We lease it for a few weeks a summer season when we travel. We live in our home when you are not here so it makes the home truly feel like home away from home when you are here. The only thing missing is a trip to the grocery store. No need to bring or buy, salt, pepper, sugar, spices. The gourmet kitchen is ready for you to do it up if cooking is your thing. Privacy - serenity - this home has it all. You will be amazed at the size of the logs this home is constructed of. I guarantee you will not find another one like it. Put the everyday busy life aside and relax to the sounds of the Sturgeon River and the many, many birds. Gaze at outstanding stars in the evening off the deck that wraps almost totally around the home. Lots of outdoor seating with a huge firepit as well.
We have traveled to many countries and have rented many vacation homes so we know what you are looking for when you want that "perfect" place.
Why the Owner Chose Indian River
Northern Michigan is such a beautiful area. Weather is fabulous during the summer. So many things to see and do or you can just totally relax.

The title above, "This is the Life" is what we kept saying, as we'd sit down by the river, or out on the porch. It pretty much sums up our stay at the Black Dog Lodge! Our stay was absolutely wonderful!! It was everything I'd hoped it would be. The house is gorgeous and EXACTLY like the pictures shown. The space it provided and all the "extras" were perfect! The huge porch was awesome too. There are several seating areas, in the sun, shade, whichever suits you best! We also loved the Sturgeon River. We had an unseasonably hot week, so the river was very refreshing, as it was always cold, and so clear. We had a great time sitting down there, so many memories made, so many laughs! Rafting down the river was probably the funnest thing we did! I loved Indian River too. It was so "up north" feeling, secluded, but yet if we wanted somewhere to go or things to see, Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Mackinac Island were all within 20-30 min! Thank you Bill and Sandie for the use of your home and all your help with any questions we had! It was awesome!

We just returned home from a wonderful week long vacation at "The Black Dog Lodge" on the Sturgeon River. One of the features we enjoyed was the wrap around deck that completely surrounds the home; it gave us great space to be outside together. On one side you can sit and view the Sturgeon River and watch people pass in their kayaks and canoes. The other side you can sit in the cool shade and watch hummingbirds, woodpeckers, cardinals, yellow finches, blue jays, etc. We also enjoyed the bon-fire pit each evening. This home is lovely and one of the nicest vacation rentals we have enjoyed over the past 10 years. Sleeping room was perfect for us (a party of 10) and having 2.5 bathrooms and a washer and dryer also helped. The kitchen is beautiful - actually the entire house is breathtaking! Another great feature is that there are several different sitting areas within the home so if you are in a large group and need some space it is easy to find a quiet place to read a book or watch a movie, etc. We could have easily stayed another week since there are so many things to do in the area surrounding this home. It is really an ideal location - it has made me feel like I might want to purchase a home for myself in this area when I am ready to retire. We definitly recommend this beautiful home to anyone thinking of going on a trip to northern Michigan - you will not be disappointed! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!
Owner response:We are so happy you enjoyed your stay at The Black Dog Lodge. Come back soon.

We just completed a fantastic week-long vacation stay at this wonderful rental. We were a group of 8 kids from ages 9-17 and their two sets of parents. The property was just as described and exceptionally clean and well-maintained. The owners were exceptionally helpful and gracious throughout the whole process of renting and staying at the property. The setting was very quiet and private, the river was lovely and the home was perfect for our large group. The abundance and variety of birds around the property was an enjoyable bonus to our stay. The close proximity to the state park and Indian River shopping and outdoor activity resources for hiking, biking and rafting made this a very convenient location. The surrounding area is full of great outdoor activities and plenty of farm stands with fresh fruits and vegetables at this time of the year. We also found traveling to Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, and Sleeping Bear Dunes very easy for day trips. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this rental and these owners to anyone planning to visit the area.

we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Black Dog Lodge and felt very comfortable in the beautiful log house nestled in the woods. We found many things to do in the area: jet skiing on Burt Lake, long bike rides on nearby trail, getting ice cream in Indian River, a short trip to visit Mackinac Island, kayaking and rafting...not to mention campfires and just plain resting and marveling at the God's beauty around us. Sandie was very gracious in answering any questions and our large group (12 in total) each found a comfortable place to stretch out. It was a very memorable vacation!

We had a wonderful week at this one of a kind log cabin home. It is has everything the owner states and more! We have rented several homes through VRBO and this was, by far, the nicest, most unique home we've stayed in. The home is outstanding, and the location is perfect. It's close to everything. We trailer a 26 foot boat, and we were able to launch from Petosky, Mullett Lake, Burt Lake and Mackinaw City. The large circular driveway made it easy to unhitch the boat and drive into Harbor Springs and Charlevoix for sunset dinners. Clean, neat and comfortable. Top of the line everything. We would highly recommend.

After driving into the forest, this luxurious log home in the woods is fabulous with lots of room indoors and outdoors to spread out . You enter into the living room and you are standing in an atrium over 2 stories tall. Straight ahead are the French doors onto the rear deck and beyond is the beautiful Sturgeon river with it’s rapid deep blue water. Then to the right is the kitchen complete with stools and a bar. I could go on but you have to experience this home and the area to know how it’s really better than a home away from home. You can tell the owners take great pride in their home. Close to all the activities you could ever want….John & June Adams

This up north retreat is fabulous. This home wraps it's arms around you from the moment you walk in. All you could want in recreation and/or relaxing all year around. We came for the skiing and took the winter raft trip down the Sturgeon River. Decorated to the nines. The kitchen is to die for!
