Welcome to Mulberry House, an upscale 1000-sq.-ft. private guest cottage... ... nestled behind the "painted lady," a Queen Anne-style house built in 1880. The fully renovated carriage house lies within its own fenced domain. Guests enter the private courtyard through a Japanese pergola. Inside awaits a secluded garden in front of the cottage. Across the stone and brick patio, the sun-drenched cottage beckons. French doors, demi-lune window, and cathedral ceiling bring the outdoors inside. The spacious 500-sq.-ft. great room is light and airy and has two seating areas. The desk overlooking the garden provides an ideal setting for work. The cottage is equipped with WiFi, cable-TV, HBO, surround-sound and iPod port. The stylish furnishings include original art, oriental carpets, and antiques. A dining peninsula with bar stools connects the great room with the kitchen. The gourmet kitchen is well stocked with self-serve breakfast, snacks & drinks. The bedroom is appointed with an antique brass bed, armoire & comfy chair. Black-out shades & a fence laden with trumpet vines provide privacy & serenity. The bathroom features claw-foot tub, glass shower, luxurious towels and robes. Guests enjoy relaxing on the main patio under the 19th-century gazebo. This park bench is a favorite spot for morning coffee and bird-watching. Cozy the year around, the cottage offers an ideal hideaway in an urban setting. Bird-feeders and -baths around the grounds draw a variety of species. The garden shed is transformed into a miniature chalet in winter. Dogwoods, redbuds, and weeping cherry trees herald the arrival of spring. Flowers and vibrant colors fill the informal gardens. The fragrance of magnolia blossoms permeates the air in lazy summer evenings.

Mulberry House is a completely renovated 1000-square-foot 19th-century carriage house located in the heart of Nashville. Nestled behind a three-story Victorian 'painted lady,' it is designed especially for travelers who prefer the ambiance of a guest cottage to that of a large hotel.

Situated on Clifton Lane adjacent to 12th Avenue South, Mulberry House is three blocks from the hoppin' 12South restaurant and retail district, five minutes from the ultra-modern Gulch district, and only 10 minutes from downtown Nashville. In the immediate vicinity are parks (Battle of Nashville Memorial and Sevier Park) and bike paths linking as far as historic East Nashville. One of the nation's few urban wildlife preserves, the beautiful Radnor Lake, is four miles further out of town on 12th Avenue/Granny White Pike.

The cottage is secluded in its own private courtyard and has the feel of a wooded retreat and secret garden. The original 1880s portion, which includes the bedroom, a bath with both tub and glass shower, and a fully equipped kitchen, features the original bead-board ceiling and rustic wood-plank walls. This older period section is enhanced by the new addition, a 500-square-foot great room complete with crossbeams, demi-lune window and cathedral ceiling. The spacious, light-infused room includes two comfortable seating areas, a media center, desk and a granite dining peninsula opening into the kitchen.

Guests enjoy the privacy of a large, fenced courtyard garden, a stone-and-brick patio and a secluded rock garden. Wrought-iron furniture, a hammock and a porch swing facilitate outdoor dining, daydreaming and relaxation. The grounds of the main house, which is situated in a quiet urban neighborhood, include an original gazebo, herb and flower gardens and stately old trees.

Mulberry House features a blend of styles and furnishings that reflect a modern sensibility. Bamboo floors, antique and contemporary furniture, original art, Oriental rugs and whimsical folk art and crafts grace the interior. Zen basins, copper rain-chains, Japanese lanterns and a magnificent Buddhist temple bell lend a tranquil, timeless aura to the garden.

As your hosts, we have a personal interest in your comfort and enjoyment while you are guests at Mulberry House. We have traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad and have enjoyed sabbaticals in Jerusalem, Tübingen, Kyoto and Hong Kong. Sojourns in facilities around the world have introduced us to many wonderful people and places. Inspired by these experiences, we have created Mulberry House to share the ideal qualities of the places we love--the hospitality of Southerners everywhere, the charm of a French country inn, the coziness of a German mountain chalet, the tranquility of a Japanese ryokan, the luxuries that distinguish a boutique hotel. As our guests will testify, we go out of our way to accommodate your individual needs and interests.

Mulberry House is furnished with art and antiques from our former gallery, Antics. These and other fine and decorative arts and artifacts from our collection are available to guests for purchase, with Mulberry House guests receiving preferred pricing.

Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, Mulberry House offers a private, peaceful headquarters for your stay in Nashville.

Come, explore and enjoy!

This 19th century restored carriage house had old-fashioned charm, but all the modern conveniences a bear could ask for! Within minutes of downtown Nashville, all that Music City had to offer was right at my fingertips. By day, I enjoyed the history and culture of the city and by night, I returned to the tranquil cottage to relax and get a good night’s rest on my plush bed.

The Mulberry House cottage was within minutes of downtown Nashville, where I visited the Grand Ole Opry and the Music City Hall of Fame. In addition to enjoying some local country and jazz music, I visited historic sites such as President Andrew Jackson’s estate.

Rumor has it that music stars and dignitaries from around the world have stayed at Mulberry House! Royalty, music and art lovers alike will thoroughly enjoy their stay at this cottage. The owners have decorated the house with art from around the world. Some pieces of the art and antique collection are available for purchase and guest receive preferred pricing.

I enjoyed seclusion and tranquility on my private patio where I could listen to the rain on the chimes on a misty morning or relax on the gazebo and enjoy the fall foliage. The owners left me treats galore, including locally made artisan bread, cheese, berries, drinks, jam, cookies and honey! I soaked in a lavender bubble bath in the claw foot tub and enjoyed listening to music on the state-of-the-art surround sound system

I had everything I needed during my visit. I had wireless internet access to find out reviews on local restaurants and also had the opportunity to visit with the homeowners nearby to ask them for suggestions on local hotspots. From plush linens to colorful textiles to delicious snacks, private parking and relaxing scenery, I was truly rejuvenated at this high end guest cottage called the Mulberry House!

Our stay at the Mulberry House was truly remarkable. It's such a unique place- so home like and comfortable. The owners are very welcoming in the Southern tradition, and do everything to make you comfortable. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and quite spacious. We had our grown daughter with us, and she was fine with sleeping on the sofa bed. The cottage was well stocked even with yummy snacks in the refrigerator! We were thrilled to be there and wish we could have stayed longer. We can't recommend enough. Lastly, it is just like it looks like in the pictures, only better.

Owner response: Sally, it was such a pleasure to have you and your family here! We can almost always count on really enjoying the guests who choose to stay with us and your and your family were our kind of people-something about a shared sensibility. Do come again!

The beauty of travel, besides all the wonderful learning experiences and fun that it brings, is that it sometimes presents us with a very special, deeply felt connection to a certain place. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, WOW! That place becomes permanently entrenched in your heart. Well, that is exactly what happened to my husband and myself in Nashville, and specifically at Mulberry Cottage. I know that this may sound terribly cliche, but words truly cannot do justice in describing this charming place. From the moment we entered, having been warmly greeted by Doug, we were enchanted. The decor and furnishings are highest-end luxury, and the artwork brings life and soul to the space. Luxe though it is, this is not a sterile 5 star hotel: every inch of the home lovingly pays homage to the city and countryside that surround it. Catherine's generous breakfast offerings (yummy granola, fresh bread, eggs, cheeses, juice, coffee, etc.) got us off on a bright and happy note each morning, ready to explore fascinating Nashville and its neighbouring rural communities. The location is wonderful; we enjoyed a great walk into the funky hipster community of 12 South, where you have super cool shops like Imogene + Willie's (hand crafted jeans and much, much more), Katy K's Ranch Dressing (rockabilly cool vintage stuff), the Frothy Monkey for yummy chai lattes amongst many other offerings, and one of our favourite fun restaurants, Urban Grub. Downtown is just a short drive away, as is up-and-coming East Nashville. Be sure to check out Margot's for lovely southern-tinged French cuisine, and hit up the Five Spot for some cool indie music and a great local vibe. City House, a funky restaurant in Germantown, was awesome as well! After forays out on the stunning Natchez Trace, and hoofing all over town, coming home to Mulberry Cottage was such a treat. If only there were more time to flip through the fascinating books and have a soak in the beautifully restored claw-foot tub! Ah well, next time! It was our great pleasure to meet Catherine and Doug, truly gracious hosts and interesting and fun people to boot! We left our heart at Mulberry Cottage, and will most certainly return in the near future! Kim and Mike Wilton Toronto, ON Canada

Owner response: Thanks, Kim, for your very gracious review. We adored having you two adventurous souls as our guests--you saw and did more in a few days than many do in a week or more. It was a pleasure to see Nashville anew through smart, sassy Canadian eyes. Come again, and we'll go with you next time!

My wife and I returned to Nashville for 3 nights in October for an event at Vanderbilt Medical Center and decided to stay in an inn or B&B. After an extensive search, we settled on the Mulberry House cottage and what a great choice it was. Owners Catherine and Doug have done a wonderful renovation on an old carriage house behind their main house and guests are treated to all the comforts of home but with magnificent decorations and art pieces formerly in Catherine's Nashville gallery. There is a large great room with plenty of space for entertaining as we did on one of our nights. The kitchen is complete and well supplied with all the necessities plus special treats customized according to the tastes of the guests. The bedroom and bathroom are also spacious and comfortable. We were delighted with our choice of the Mulberry House, were proud to show it off to our old Nashville friends and would recommend it heartily to anyone needing a short or long term stay in Music City. While guest privacy is well-maintained, the owners are readily available to deal with any problems or answer any questions. The location is very convenient to downtown Nashville as well as the Green Hills shopping area and the local colleges such as Vanderbilt, Belmont and Lipscomb. 5 stars from us for a first class accommodation.

Owner response: One of the delights of having our cottage is meeting interesting people from around the country and the world. So often we discover kindred spirits who share our love of travel and of Nashville. We enjoyed so much meeting the two of you, and hope to see more of you in the future!

We chose the Mullberry House as our "home away form home" for our daughters wedding because we wanted something special for the very special time in our lives. It is a great location, close to everything we needed. We had plenty of room to spread out with all our stuff for the wedding. It was such a joy to arrive after an 8 hour drive to find that we did not have to go out for breakfast groceries. The kitchen and fridge was completely stocked. We would recommend this place for sure.

A lovely private cottage in a quiet neighborhood. Our hosts, Catherine and Doug were very accommodating and thoughtful during our stay. They provided a bountiful array of breakfast items including fresh fruit ,freshly baked bread and homemade granola. The furnishings in the cottage were upscale and wonderful art adorned the walls. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this place to our friends..in fact I just did yesterday! Thanks for the hospitality.

My husband selected this cottage for a weekend getaway to celebrate our five-year wedding anniversary. It was the perfect pick! It is so beautifully decorated and had all the amenities we wanted. We loved having the kitchen already stocked with everything we needed to make breakfast each morning. Catherine had even purchased "five-year" aged Gouda cheese in honor of our five-year anniversary, it was such a special touch! The cottage was so comfortable and the perfect size. It was nice that the owners' house is right there on the property so if you need anything, you can just knock on their door. The fence around the cottage gives privacy. We loved it and would definitely stay there again if we are in the Nashville area!

Everything about our stay at Mulberry House was delightful! We came to Nashville for our daughter's Vanderbilt graduation, and were sorry that we did not discover this amazing cottage early in her Vandy career. We were enchanted from the moment we walked through the gate to discover our beautiful private garden. The cottage's wonderfully eclectic collection of art and furnishings, and the well stocked kitchen (beer and sodas, wonderful bread, cookies, cheese, berries, eggs, and the best granola I have ever tasted) were simply amazing. The location is perfect! The beautiful tree lined streets around the cottage are a perfect place for a brisk walk, and there is a lovely park nearby. And yet, you are just minutes away from the trendy 12south area, the Universities, and the fun of downtown Nashville. I have found many lovely places to stay through VRBO, but nothing compares to the warmth and charm of this little Nashville jewel.

Our first trip to Nashville, It was just my husband and me, the Mulberry house was the perfect place. It is pretty centrally located and simple to get around to the places we wanted to go. The Mulberry House & surrounding property was beautiful. Lots of foliage, everything was so green & lush. There's a nice privacy fence around the cottage and a little patio with a table & chairs. The house itself is charming, inside & out. Pretty much every amenity that you could want is included. We flew & didnt check our bags so wanted to travel light, so we checked with Catherine & everything we needed was there when we arrived. It was a pleasure visiting with Doug & Catherine...they were available but not "in our way." They had some good suggestions & comments for our daytrips. We wanted to do things in Nashville that we could do only in Nashville. Here are some things that we did: Grand Ole Opry - look on the website ahead of time, they have different performers each night. Right across from the Grand Ole Opry is the new & huge Opry Mills mall. Also very close is the Opryland Hotel. Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum - We spent a couple of hours there. It was interesting, but pretty predictable. It was a little difficult to find due to construction of the Music City Convention Center that is supposed to be open in 2013. Scenic drive - we went drove to Franklin, about 15 miles away. Ate breakfast at Puckett's Grocery, which was fine, but nothing great - I think we werent there at the right time of day. We bummed around Franklin & enjoyed their several antique shops. Followed the Natchez Trace back to Nashville & stopped for a late lunch at Loveless...well worth doing! I ate 4 biscuits - the peach preserves were the best! Bluebird Cafe - It was on a Monday, we stood in line at 4:30 to watch songwriters sing their original tunes on Open Mike Night. This was more impressive than I expected. Broadway Street - This is a strip of bars & bootshops, with live music in most of the bars, up&comers singing for tips. This was kind of fun. We liked Tootsie's & Bootlegger's the best. We also ate Big River Brewery & it was very good food! We checked out the website Nashvile Scene. This is where we saw that Earl Scruggs' funeral was open to the public at the Ryman. That was an amazing experience! Enjoy Nashville & the Mulberry House. (We didnt even begin to explore Civil War stuff.) It was a fun trip & we highly recommend it!

It was nice coming in from the long flight from Oregon to an instantly comfortable setting. And nice having breakfast things available when we didn't have a clue at first where to go out for breakfast. Arriving to find a Corona and lime waiting was highly appreciated, as was having a AuxIn line available on the stereo so we could plug in a smartphone and stream our hometown radio station. The eclectic collection of art is great fun. Love the mood of this place!

To cross the threshold into the garden and guest house is to enter another world of tranquility where every comfort is provided. Objets d'art from many cultures spark the imagination and delight the senses. The best homemade granola in the world with fresh berries makes a wonderful breakfast.

About the owner: Mulberry House Catherine Snow and Doug Knight 1100 Clifton Lane Nashville, Tennessee 37204. We have traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad and have enjoyed sabbaticals in Jerusalem, Tübingen, Kyoto and Hong Kong. During our travels, we have especially enjoyed staying in guest houses where we could experience the local lifestyle. Inspired by these travels, we renovated our 19th-century carriage house and opened Mulberry House in 2007. Since then, we have acted as hosts for an array of native and foreign guests and enjoyed every minute! Since I speak 'Southern' and my husband speaks German and Norwegian and we are acquainted with the challenges of foreign travel, we are well equipped to welcome to guests from around the world. We take pleasure in hospitality and special interest in our guests' comfort and convenience—we are one of few locations where you can anticipate line-dried, ironed sheets in season. And we take pride in responding to special guest requests. When possible your wish is our command: examples of personal service include a chaise longue for a recuperating patient, champagne for honeymooners, flowers for anniversary guests, birthday candles for a child's special day, transport of parents to a crowded Vanderbilt commencement, holiday treats galore, and of course, personalized itineraries for guests who want to explore Nashville. While we take pride in providing the highest quality service, we make a practice of protecting our guests' privacy. Once we have welcomed our guests, we never enter the secluded cottage courtyard without being invited. Mulberry House offers the best of both worlds--complete privacy along with highly personal service. Come stay with us!

                  Why the Owner Chose Nashville:
We have lived in Nashville since the 1970s when we both became affiliated with Vanderbilt University. We have enjoyed watching Nashville evolve into an increasingly interesting city, which offers not only an astounding array of music but also excellent art, theater and restaurants as well as professional football and hockey teams. Mulberry House enjoys a convenient, central location from which to take advantage of these offerings. We are located at 1100 Clifton Lane, adjacent to 12th Avenue South. The cottage is three blocks from the refurbished 12South restaurant and retal district, 5 minutes from the ultra-modern Gulch district, and only 10 minutes from downtown Nashville. In our immediate vicinity, there are parks (Battle of Nashville, Memorial and Sevier Park) and bike paths linking as far as historic East Nashville. One of the nation's few urban wildlife preserves, the beautiful Radnor Lake is 4 miles further out of town on 12th Avenue/Granny White Pike. Mulberry House is conveniently situated in an attractive residential neighborhood within a few miles of most visitors’ favorite destinations: Music Row, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Green Hills (home of the famous Bluebird Cafe, the shopping meccas of The Mall at Green Hills and Hill Place) & Hillsboro Village, which features the Belcourt Cinema, an excellent independent film house. We are approximately 3 miles (7-minute drive) from Vanderbilt, where my husband is a professor. Whether you are visiting Nashville for business or pleasure, Mulberry House offers an ideal location in the heart of the city.

The Unique Benefits at this Guest House:
In addition to our outstanding location, guests enjoy many benefits including a fully equipped and well-stocked gourmet kitchen, fresh herbs from the garden, plush bathrobes and luxurious bath products as well as line-dried, ironed fine cotton sheets in season. We also offer such amenities as private off-street parking, storage for bicycles and use of the gazebo and grounds. As a welcome gift, we also leave special treats such as a little box of cookies from Provence Bakery or paletas from the neighborhood all-natural Mexican popsicle shop.
