Welcome to Mulberry House, an upscale 1000-sq.-ft. private guest cottage...
Location: Nashville, Middle, Tennessee, USA View Map
Accommodations: Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Keywords: Guest Cottage
Mulberry House is a completely renovated 1000-square-foot 19th-century carriage house located in the heart of Nashville. Nestled behind a three-story Victorian "painted lady," it is designed especially for travelers who prefer the ambiance of a guest cottage to that of a large hotel.
Situated on Clifton Lane adjacent to 12th Avenue South, Mulberry House is three blocks from the hoppin' 12South retail and restaurant district, five minutes from the ultra-modern Gulch district, and only 10 minutes from downtown Nashville. In the immediate vicinity there are parks (Battle of Nashville Memorial and Sevier Park) and bike paths linking as far as historic East Nashville. One of the nation's few urban wildlife preserves, the beautiful Radnor Lake, is less than four miles further out of town on 12th Avenue/Granny White Pike.
The cottage is secreted in it's own private courtyard, and has the feel of a wooded retreat/secret garden. The original 1880s portion, which includes the large bedroom, a bath with both tub and shower, and a fully equipped kitchen, features the original bead-board ceiling and rustic wood-plank walls. This older period section is enhanced by the new addition, a 500-square-foot great room complete with crossbeams, demi-lune window and cathedral ceiling. This spacious, light-infused room includes two comfortable seating areas, a media center, desk and a granite dining peninsula opening into the kitchen.
Guests enjoy the privacy of a large, fenced courtyard garden, a stone and brick patio and a secluded rock garden. Wrought-iron furniture, a hammock and benches facilitate outdoor dining, daydreaming and relaxation. The grounds of the main house, which is situated in a quiet urban neighborhood, include an original gazebo, herb and flower gardens and stately old trees.
Mulberry House features a blend of styles and furnishings that reflect a modern sensibility. Bamboo floors, antique and contemporary furniture, original art, Oriental rugs and whimsical folk art and crafts grace the interior. Zen basins, copper rain-chains, Japanese lanterns and a magnificent Buddhist temple bell lend a tranquil, timeless aura to the garden.
As your hosts, we have a personal interest in your comfort and enjoyment while you are guests at Mulberry House. We have traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad and have enjoyed sabbaticals in Jerusalem, Tübingen, Kyoto and Hong Kong. Sojourns in facilities around the world have introduced us to many wonderful people and places. Inspired by these experiences, we have created Mulberry House to share the ideal qualities of the places we love--the hospitality of Southerners everywhere, the charm of a French country inn, the coziness of a German mountain chalet, the tranquility of a Japanese ryokan, the luxuries that distinguish a boutique hotel. As our guests will testify, we go out of our way to accommodate your individual needs and interests.
Mulberry House is furnished with art and antiques from our former gallery, Antics. These and other fine and decorative arts and artifacts from our collection are available to guests for purchase, with Mulberry House guests receiving preferred pricing.
Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, Mulberry House offers a private, peaceful headquarters for your stay in Nashville.
Come, explore and enjoy!

This 19th century restored carriage house had old-fashioned charm, but all the modern conveniences a bear could ask for! Within minutes of downtown Nashville, all that Music City had to offer was right at my fingertips. By day, I enjoyed the history and culture of the city and by night, I returned to the tranquil cottage to relax and get a good night’s rest on my plush bed.
The Mulberry House cottage was within minutes of downtown Nashville, where I visited the Grand Ole Opry and the Music City Hall of Fame. In addition to enjoying some local country and jazz music, I visited historic sites such as President Andrew Jackson’s estate.
Rumor has it that music stars and dignitaries from around the world have stayed at Mulberry House! Royalty, music and art lovers alike will thoroughly enjoy their stay at this cottage. The owners have decorated the house with art from around the world. Some pieces of the art and antique collection are available for purchase and guest receive preferred pricing.
I enjoyed seclusion and tranquility on my private patio where I could listen to the rain on the chimes on a misty morning or relax on the gazebo and enjoy the fall foliage. The owners left me treats galore, including locally made artisan bread, cheese, berries, drinks, jam, cookies and honey! I soaked in a lavender bubble bath in the claw foot tub and enjoyed listening to music on the state-of-the-art surround sound system
I had everything I needed during my visit. I had wireless internet access to find out reviews on local restaurants and also had the opportunity to visit with the homeowners nearby to ask them for suggestions on local hotspots. From plush linens to colorful textiles to delicious snacks, private parking and relaxing scenery, I was truly rejuvenated at this high end guest cottage called the Mulberry House!

Upscale Private Guest Cottage in the Heart of Nashville
Why the Owner Chose Nashville
We have lived in Nashville since the 1970s when we both became affiliated with Vanderbilt University. We have enjoyed watching Nashville evolve into an increasingly interesting city, which offers not only an astounding array of music but also excellent art, theater and restaurants as well as professional football and hockey teams. Mulberry House enjoys a convenient, central location from which to take advantage of these offerings. We are located at 1100 Clifton Lane, adjacent to 12th Avenue South. We are three blocks from the refurbished 12South retail and restaurant district, 5 minutes from the ultra-modern Gulch district, and only 10 minutes from downtown Nashville. In our immediate vicinity, there are parks (Battle of Nashville, Memorial and Sevier Park) and bike paths linking as far as historic East Nashville. One of the nation's few urban wildlife preserves, the beautiful Radnor Lake is less than 4 miles further out of town on 12th Avenue/Granny White Pike.
Mulberry House is conveniently situated in an attractive residential neighborhood within a few miles of most visitors’ favorite destinations: Music Row, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Green Hills (home of the famous Bluebird Cafe, the shopping meccas of The Mall at Green Hills and Hill Place) & Hillsboro Village, which features the Belcourt Cinema, an excellent independent film house. We are approximately 3 miles (7-minute drive) from Vanderbilt, where my husband is a professor.
Whether you are visiting Nashville for business or pleasure, Mulberry House offers an ideal location in the heart of the city.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage
In addition to our outstanding location, guests enjoy many benefits including a fully-equipped and well-stocked gourmet kitchen, private, off-street parking, storage for bicycles, and use of the gazebo and grounds.
As a welcome gift, we also leave special treats such as a little box of cookies from Provence Bakery or paletas from the neighborhood all-natural Mexican popsicle shop.

We have traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad and have enjoyed sabbaticals in Jerusalem, Tuebingen, Kyoto and Hong Kong. During our travels, we have especially enjoyed staying in guest houses where we could experience the local lifestyle.
Inspired by these travels, we renovated our 19th-century carriage house and opened Mulberry House in 2007. Since then, we have acted as hosts for an array of native and foreign guests and enjoyed every minute!
Since I speak "Southern" and my husband speaks German and Norwegian and we are acquainted with the challenges of foreign travel, we are well equipped to welcome to guests from around the world.
We take pleasure in hospitality and special interest in our guests' comfort and convenience—we are one of few locations where you can anticipate line-dried, ironed sheets in season. And we take pride in responding to special guest requests. When possible your wish is our command: examples of personal service include a chaise longue for a recuperating patient, champagne for honeymooners, flowers for anniversary guests, birthday candles for a child's special day, transport of parents to a crowed Vanderbilt commencement, holiday treats galore, and of course, personalized itineraries for guests who want to explore Nashville..
While we take pride in providing the highest quality service, we make a practice of protecting our guests' privacy. Once we have welcomed our guests, we never enter the secluded cottage courtyard without being invited.
Mulberry House offers the best of both worlds--complete privacy along with highly personal service.
Come stay with us!

It was nice coming in from the long flight from Oregon to an instantly comfortable setting. And nice having breakfast things available when we didn't have a clue at first where to go out for breakfast. Arriving to find a Corona and lime waiting was highly appreciated, as was having a AuxIn line available on the stereo so we could plug in a smartphone and stream our hometown radio station. The eclectic collection of art is great fun. Love the mood of this place!

To cross the threshold into the garden and guest house is to enter another world of tranquility where every comfort is provided. Objets d'art from many cultures spark the imagination and delight the senses. The best homemade granola in the world with fresh berries makes a wonderful breakfast.

Because we have reason to be in Nashville frequently, we were thrilled to find Mulberry House (MH) - a special, private retreat that offers an environment perfect for productive work as well as relaxation. MH is serenity defined and offers more amenities than any local hotel. We especially enjoy the sound system and wonderful art and artifacts in this restored carriage house. MH is convenient to Green Hills, the new 12South area, Vanderbilt, Belmont, Music Row and downtown. Easy access to I-65 makes our trips to Brentwood and Franklin convenient. We were sad to leave the tremendous hospitality of Doug and Catherine and look forward to our next visit.

We love staying at Mulberry House. Catherine and Doug are great hosts, fun and gracious, and very knowledgeable about where to eat and what to do in Nashville. Situated behind their house, the setting of Mulberry House is quiet and lush, with its entrance from a wonderful private patio. The house is elegantly furnished and spacious, the amenities are great, and the bed is very comfortable. By far the best place we have stayed in Nashville.

While visiting Nashville for a month we wanted to be close to family but still have a place to call "home." A spacious and elegantly renovated carriage house became just that. Mulberry House is located in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood just minutes away from great restaurants, entertainment and shopping. The property includes a delightful and beautifully landscaped private patio. The owners, Catherine and Doug, were gracious and welcoming "innkeepers" and we can't wait to see them again. They were so helpful and generous, never intrusive and gave great advice for dining, entertainment and sights to see. We will definitely stay at Mulberry House again, have already recommended it to friends and heartily recommend it to anyone wanted a GREAT place to stay in Nashville.

We spent 2 wks at Mulberry House and it was a wonderful, healing retreat for my husband post op open heart surgery. Catherine and Doug are the loveliest people and made sure that anything and everything we needed was there. The carriage house (cottage) is perfect...comfortable and cozy but with plenty of space. Being surrounded by the beautiful garden and quiet street made for a peaceful environment perfect for rest and relaxation. It is close to everything though....a perfect location for visiting downtown or the Universities. We are so grateful Mulberry House was there during the critical recovery period. Doug and Catherine are the perfect hosts. They respect your privacy but are available to help with whatever you need. The carriage house is an oasis in Nashville! And Catherine makes the BEST granola.....

Chris & I spent 3 fantastic nights at the Mulberry Cottage in October. Catherine & Doug are excellent hosts who provided us with everything we needed for a great getaway. The furnishings, artwork & garden were superb, and the location can't be beat. We truly felt like we were at home, but BETTER! The kitchen was so well stocked we only needed to go out for dinner, and the easy access to Granny White Parkway made all our excursions a cinch. We will definitely go back as often as possible.

I am writing after our second visit to this wonderful carriage house. The accomodations are only surpasssed only by the warmth and hospitality of the hosts. We have already reserved our third stay. We particularly enjoy the serenity and privacy of the courtyard, the fabulous goodies that Catherine leaves, the wifi (very productive place to work), the yummy bed with sheets that were air dried outside this summer (when is the last time you had sheets that fresh?). The location is very convenient to downtown, Green Hills, Brentwood and Franklin. You will not find a better value in the area.

Having traveled extensively, I have stayed in numerous B&B's, and none compare to my experience at the Mulberry House. Catherine and Doug are the most charming of innkeepers, warm, caring, interesting and willing to do all to ensure your stay is pleasurable. The cottage is most comfortable, and well decorated with lots of great art, and in the most peaceful of settings. The private courtyard, surrounded by old trees will keep you outdoors with a book or glass of wine. It is an ideal location, accessible to everything! You could not ask for more. I can’t imagine a better hidden gem in Nashville or beyond!

Imagine arriving at the Mulberry House after driving through the biggest thunderstorm you've ever experienced. You're tired, stressed from the drive, and hot because you happen to be visiting during one of the worst heat waves in recent history. All you want to do is relax, cool off and find your center…and that is exactly what the Mulberry House provides. Like a little oasis, the Mulberry House was exactly what we needed when we arrived in Nashville. Staying at a hotel would have just added to the stress. I cannot think of a better place to stay while in Nashville. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the proprietors who welcomed us with open arms. They took us through the cottage to show us all the amenities and then left us to get settled. What we discovered after they left was a wonderful house stocked with all of the comforts of home. Cold beverages and delicious snacks picked up from a local bakery awaited us as well as a pantry stocked with munchies and a fridge full of fresh fruit and breakfast fixings. Luxurious towels and robes were stocked in the bathroom and fine linens were on the comfortable bed. The cottage also had premium cable and Wi-Fi as well as a washer and dryer which came in very handy. All in all, the Mulberry House is a beautifully decorated, tranquil, hidden gem with all of the modern conveniences you want. We could not have been more relaxed. After being out all day in the hustle and bustle of Nashville, it was so comforting to know we were returning to our home away from home. I would absolutely recommend the Mulberry House to anyone visiting Nashville who wants to be close to everything but have their own space to relax and recharge their batteries.
