Joshua Tree Getaway
Finish your novel, play electric guitar outdoors, watch movies, go for a hike, shake your dog's city blues, renew vows, or just bliss out in the hot tub.
Built in 1963, this rustic modern 980 square ft. ranchette has an airy floor plan, big windows, concrete floors, exposed beam ceilings and tons of privacy. It's a comfy place to stay a while and dig into creative projects in the peace and quiet of open space, eclectic vintage modern furnishings and artisan objects. Located on partially fenced acreage on a sparsely populated mesa, this getaway offers sweeping views of Joshua Tree National Park and Copper Mountain. Achieve clarity by looking out of big picture windows to catch the sun or moon rising over the foothills below. Step out onto the patio for starry night skies. Ten minute access to the park encourages spontaneous natural outings. Or get into local culture: the town of Joshua Tree is only five minutes away.
The kitchen comes (equipped by foodies!) with cookware and inspiring cookbooks. You'll find an assortment of cooking oils, spices, coffee, teas, and other staples to get you started. Basic cable, wi-fi plus an assortment of CDs and DVDs are provided for days when you just don't feel like leaving the house. The house is ideally suited for one person or a couple but should friends arrive for a sleep-over, extra bedding and beds are stashed in the closet.
Nestled in the shade of the roomy back porch, the jetted hot tub awaits tired hikers in need of rejuvenation, and stressed city dwellers in need of a calming soak. A xeric garden represents a sampling of yuccas, agaves, acacias, and various cactii from deserts around the world.
The surrounding area caters to a wide range of interests: athletic (world class rock climbing and trail running in addition to hiking, and horseback riding for all levels); musical (clubs and outdoor festivals); artistic (endless photo ops whether your slant is scenic or ironic); consumer (shopping from junking to better mid-century furnishings, cowboy stores, designer outlet malls, and a couple of fantastic nurseries); culinary (cute weekly farmer’s market, two health food stores and a wonderfully edited gourmet shop all supplement the standard grocery fare), mystic (retreats, drumming circles, Buddhist Temple and at least one UFO vortex); and cultural (earnest live theatre and friendly art galleries).
Finally, if grandma comes to visit with her lady friends from the biker club, and if you are feeling either lucky or tired of peaceful isolation, a short trip to Morongo in the lower desert for a little casino action always makes for a bit of lowbrow fun.
This house is priced to encourage longer-term stays. Sit a spell, or come and go! With lots of space in the closet and garage, this is a spot to make yourself completely at home.
Housebroken dogs are welcome, as long as they refrain from chewing furniture, digging plants, or smoking inside. This applies to their owners as well. Dog bowls are provided along with one one large dog bed.
Amenities: One bedroom with large closet, one bath with tub and shower, wood burning stove, air conditioning (evaporative water), portable heaters, large outdoor fire pit, Weber BBQ, washer/dryer, free internet, satellite TV + DVD, CD player, new kitchen appliances (fridge, electric stove and oven) including espresso machine, pots and pans, blender, food processor, microwave, and utensils; extra linens, blankets, fluffy pillows, fat down comforters, king-sized bed w/ memory foam plus two guest beds for slumber parties; belize II oval hot tub, roomy and secure double garage for storage, parking, or tinkering.

Not only was this our first trip to Joshua Tree, but we travel with our faithful labradoodle Louie. When I discovered Miriam's house for rent, we were thrilled to stay in a place that wasn't a motel where we had to keep Louie on a leash. Little did we know, it would be the best travel experience we've had. The home is beautiful, comfortable, and spacious- and Miriam's guest book provided every manner of local information you could possibly want. And the property is absolutely gorgeous! We loved every minute we were there, and Louie especially loved being off leash so he could bark at the roadrunners and rabbits. This home is a credit to the beauty of Joshua Tree, and we look forward to being back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.

My husband and I had a very relaxing break at Joshua Tree Getaway. The views from the property were wonderful. We so enjoyed our early morning coffee while sitting in the beautifully landscaped backyard. After spending the mornings hiking and exploring, it was great to return to this house and enjoy the hot tub. We loved the watching the storms roll in and we made good use of the great wood burning stove. Our Aussie loved the fenced backyard and the coolness of the cement floors - perfect home for all three of us.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Stayed here in Nov. and fell in love. Miriam was very accomodating and friendly, allowing us to come stay overnight with less than a day's notice. She put so much thought and care into everything in the home- from the well stocked kitchen (complete with espresso machine and espresso pods in the freezer) to a thorough guest book with restaurant reviews, hikes, diections, etc. We even found a water color set and paper in the desk drawer in case creativity struck! Great CD and DVD collection which made for a relaxing night in by the wood burning stove. I really enjoyed all of the unique and eclectic art and decor. Our dogs loved sniffing all the unfamiliar smells in the fenced yard and we enjoyed a soak in the 2 person spa on the back patio in the cold desert night. I have told lots of friends about how lovely this place is. I can't wait to go back again. One night was definitely not enough!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.

This home is ideally located with beautiful morning sunrises, and the yard is carefully tended to with great native species. Inside, we had all that we needed--including plenty of wood because we experienced wind, rain, sleet, and cold!!--February visit--and it was easy to make ourselves at home. Great ambience with excellent meals close by at "Crossroads." The owner, Miriam, is most helpful, and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. It would be a great place to undertake a creative project. Take lots of books. If you get too cold, you're only 45 minutes from Palm Springs. Joshua Tree itself is stark, quiet, and perfect for hiking or climbing. We saw the Kenneth Kellogg desert home at the end of Mt. Shasta off 62 and were stunned at its construction. We'll be back--hopefully to see the desert blooms some year! Just got back - it's a great getaway. The owner is friendly and clearly cares about making her guests' stay a comfortable one. What's more, she has a great talent for design and decor, which makes the "vacation rental" feel like a real home away from home. Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We felt right at home from the moment that we stepped through the door of this little gem. The music and movie selection, and the kitchen were happily utilized during our month long stay...not to mention the rollaway bed, which came in handy for some outdoor sleeping under the stars. Hours were spent on the garden patio soaking in the million dollar views and checking our ebay auctions. Thanks for the warm, groovy vibe. Can't wait to come back next year!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We have stayed at this beautiful cabin twice now - and come rain or shine, this place is amazing. If it's sunny - time on the back porch with a book, watching the sun set and barbeque. If it's stormy - cozy on the couch with a fire crackling away, watching the storm come in from the huge picture windows. We've had all weather while staying here and have loved all of it! Such a peaceful little haven on the mesa! Miriam (the owner) has put so much love into the wonderful decor and landscaping. Plus the Crossroads Cafe is only a 5-minute drive away, so it's easy to get your daily fix of great coffee and tofu reuben sandwiches...! A perfect spot for relaxing into desert time.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

If you need a place to get to know each other all over again, or a get-a-away sanctuary to finish a project, this is it. Soooo quiet and relaxing. Fun, too, especially for my dog. Grocery, takeout, etc. are nearby if you wanna stay in most nights like we did. The hostess is very knowledgeable and informative about the area, though, if you do want to go out and socialize. I hope I can visit again someday!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

we devote one week out of each year to rock climbing in joshua tree. never have we found a better home away from home as this retreat. it's perfect for us given the lack of distractions (tv) and never before realized valley vista as seen from the enormous picture windows. the house rests upon the north mesa providing beautiful morning sunrises and epic evening light shows. the owner's thoughtful use of natural light and outdoor living space is key to the overall experience. what a fabulous job making this retreat cozy and capitalizing on the natural beauty of the area. in addition, all the necessities of good living are well appointed from the down bed coverings to kitchen gizmos. attention to detail is deliberate, comforting and cheerfully kitschy. it is the perfect inspirational setting for those seeking it. thank you for a great week! we hope to come back again and again.Did you find this review helpful? Owner info

About the owner: As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found my little spot in the Mojave....I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers. My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, wi-fi and espresso!).
Why the Owner Chose Joshua Tree:
There are four reasons that I chose Joshua Tree as a location for a second home. Practically speaking, JT is only a few hours drive from major cultural hubs and as such, it's a place that I can frequent often and on short notice. I was also drawn to the vibrant local scene. And then there's the unbelievable landscape of the national park. But even more than all of that, my real motivation had to do with the inexplicable sense of tranquility and giddiness that comes over me as I leave the pavement when nearing the property.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The best spot in this house-I think- revolves around the big dining table even though the table itself is not the amazing thing. This is where I've served many meals for groups of friends who are all too busy to get together back home, wherever back home might be. I often design while sitting at this table, alternating between staring out to the view for ideas, punching out emails, and scribbling on messy stacks of paper. From the reports that guests have given me, this table has also served in the writing of songs, all-night nickel poker, quilt-making, violin practice, the completion of crossword puzzles, the planning of road trips, and one marriage proposal. I like to think that guests will find the house to be just like that table: ground zero for whatever they want to be doing most!
Also the stillness of the nights on the mesa...just incredible...but I could go on and on.
